Antiquing is one of my favorite hobbies. I love searching for items for my MCM-themed home and rockabilly myself. I am always on the hunt for mid-century wares whether it's online (Etsy.com) or in brick and mortar stores like the Sugar Chest Antique Mall. My mother-in-law lives in Boca Raton, Florida and every time my husband and I visit, I make sure to spend one afternoon browsing the aisles in this huge place! Navigating the vast rows of cases and shelves displaying antiques from various eras can seem like a gargantuan task. If I do not have a plan or even know what I am looking for, I get sensory overload. In many antique malls, you can find stacks of vintage postcards, political memorabilia, lamps, furniture, china, costume jewelry, fine jewelry, statuary, clothing, prints, paintings, ceramics, electronics, chandeliers, pianos, and Barbie dolls. Let me tell you, there have been times I have left stores empty-handed simply because I was overwhelmed.

There are a few factors that can contribute to what I call, "antique meltdown." Here are some circumstances that can lead to a lackluster antiquing experience:

1. Lots of cases in one storefront. Many antique malls are a large, single space with several square footage. The owner of the mall rents out sections of his floor space and/or cases to various dealers/sellers. The individual seller (renter) pays the owner rent and the owner also gets a percentage of each seller's sales. There is typically many sellers in one storefront. Navigating/browsing from case to case can be a challenge.

2. Poor organization of displays. Some, but not all, antique malls have so many cases and displays in one space so they are almost smooshed together. "Clutter" would be the key issue here. Not to worry, I will help you figure it out.

3. Treasures galore and "what on earth is that?! This is not usually a problem but expect to see a lot of weird and funky wares amongst vintage treasure. This can be a fun aspect of your shopping experience and yet it can add to your frustration. Again, I will share my secrets to finding that lucite dream in the pile of velour sweaters.

Here are some fun pictures depicting a few of the wild things I have found while antiquing:
So, how does a gal figure it out? How can an afternoon sifting through the immense layers of vintage history and mystery lead to shopping nirvana? Here are my tried and true methods. After years of trial and error in the aisles, I promise these suggestions will help!

1. Go with a plan. Have a basic idea of what you are looking for. Need a table for your MCM kitchen? Looking for that gravy boat to match your dishes? Want a Sputnik light for the dining room? Desiring a pair of ceramic cats for your shadow boxes? Pining for a carved bakelite bangle to add to your collection? Before venturing out, make a list. You may not find EXACTLY what you are looking for but if you ask the staff, their renters/vendors may know. Finding your dream piece can be as simple as a phone call or getting a business card. Vintage through networking is a beautiful thing.

2. Ask the staff for help. If you find yourself feeling the beginning twinges of "antiquing meltdown," stop. Breathe. Relax. Ask for assistance. The staff are very familiar with the layout of the mall and they usually know where to find various items. Just ask. For example, the very first time I visited The Sugar Chest, I was in search of Bakelite bangles. I am always collecting. I am an addict. Nevertheless, I had been walking up and down the aisles peering into case after case. I couldn't find any bakelite and I was like, "Forget it. I will wait until I go back to DC so I can just look on Etsy." Then, like an angel, one of the amazing staff members appeared and she kindly and promptly took me over to this glorious case of color-blinding bakelite. It was like I found my shrine. I ended up buying three pieces that day:

3. If you find funky wares, have fun! Part of the allure of the antique mall is all the funny and wild stuff for sale. I have seen nude male paintings, Leather Ken Barbie dolls, velour hats ala Dr. Seuss (see above), and tacky holiday sweaters. Sure, you may encounter a beige, 1980s Members Only Jacket or a pair of cracked, unwearable shoes but just keep looking.

4. Be patient. This is very important. When it comes to antiquing, do not rush. Get lunch before you go and make an afternoon out of it. Enjoy the day browsing and taking it all in. I was once at a flea market and I found a basket of various plastic and wood bangles. Each bangle was listed as 6 dollars. I almost passed it by because there were so many bracelets jammed in that basket. But I decided to patiently sort through the bangles and lo and behold, I found an orange prystal bakelite spacer. I quickly (and sneakily) did a friction test and yes, it was the real deal. I nearly missed out on scoring bakelite for 6 bucks. See? PATIENCE.

5. Ask about that price tag. Sometimes you may find something you have been looking for but the price is insane. I once saw a simple red bakelite bangle listed for $110. It was about 1/2 thick, smooth, and had no special carvings. Yep. Way too high for a bangle like that. I kept on going. If your gut is telling you a price is too high, go on instinct. Do not buy if you think you can get a better deal somewhere else. Remember, patience. If you wait and stick to your budget, you will find your treasure. However, you may encounter a situation where the staff is willing to negotiate a better deal or try to get you 10-20% off. They will offer to call the vendor and ask for a lower price. This is especially true if the item in question has been on display a long time and thus, hasn't sold.

So, those are my tips for surviving the antique mall! What are your methods?

As I was getting ready for work this morning, I realized that it has been 8 years since I have been wearing vintage and/or a rockabilly style every day. In 2005, I lost 33 pounds and as a result, I had a 'clean slate' to revamp my wardrobe and update my look. After a nearly year of wavering between Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, Gap, and Banana Republic, I decided to return to my 'vintage roots.' In junior high school, I fell in love with vintage clothes and 50s rock and roll. By my 11th grade year, I began incorporating 1950s cardigans, pencil skirts, and seamed stockings into my daily look. I got odd looks from my mall-clad classmates but I didn't care. I felt and looked amazing.

As college came and went, I wore vintage less and less. My beloved vintage treasures were put in a donation box and replaced by Gap denim overalls and striped turtlenecks (sorry, it was the early/mid 90s). By the time I was 30, I was carrying a Louis Vuitton "Alma" monogram bag, donning Prada sunglasses, and 'strutting my stuff' in my Citizens of Humanity jeans. What happened to the vintage girl? She was lost in a sea of Neiman Marcus receipts and Burberry scarves. The girl who once pined for saddle shoes, platform heels, chiffon scarves, and boiled wool cardigans traded her style in for couture accessories, Chanel lipstick, and Gucci G's.

When I lost my weight, I discovered my vintage soul and I "cleaned house." I sold most of my designer wares on eBay and made a nice 'chunk of change.' My ski trip in 2007 was partially funded thanks to the sales. My fancy clothes were donated and I was left with an empty closet and a wish list that contained beaded cardigans, bakelite, Re-Mix wedges, Polly heels, snoods, vintage denim, wool pencil skirts, lucite bags, Hawaiian dresses, house coats, and girdles.

Over these eight years, I have started collecting various "must-have" clothing and accessories that can truly give a vintage look to even the simplest, modern made pieces. For example, a simple black tee from Target and a pair of Levis 501s (cuffed) will come to life with a Pendleton 49er jacket, black engineer boots, and a studded belt. You can also get a cropped, black leather (or pleather) motorcycle jacket, throw on the same black tee and complete the look with a leopard hair scarf and skinny jeans or pencil skirt.

Here are a few of my favorite, must-have rockabilly gal essentials:
1. Warpath Leather Goods! Matt Strickland's belts just incredible and he is super nice! I have this one in tan and another in black.

2. A good-fitting motorcycle jacket that sits above or just at the waist line. This one is by Michael Kors:

3. Trophy Queen Bags! I just got my first Trophy Queen and I LOVE it! I carry all of my daily and work essentials in this bag and not only it is cute, it is well made and sturdy!

4. 49er jackets. They are warm and made any jean outfit look instantly vintage!

5. Engineer boots! (See photo above). These are by Frye and I bought them last September. They took a while to break in but they feel like butter (sorry, "buttah") now! I wear mine with skinny jeans, cuffed jeans, and some skirts in the dead of winter.

So, what are your vintage style accessory musts?

It has been eight months since I have been active on my blog. Wow. I have never been away this long. I admit a part of me feels weird (and a bit guilty) writing something not work-related. I am a technical writer so 'writing' should come easy. The words should be flowing but my thoughts, addled with awkwardness, are undermining me. No,Tara, staring at the screen with your nervous fingers hovering over the keyboard is not going to prove fruitful. Like a chilly pool on a hot summer day, I cannot slowly ease my way into the water one step at a time. I have to jump in and get it over with quickly. Here I am, jumping back in the world of blogging without hesitation (albeit with some reservations).

In the months previous, I had my birthday, went to Viva Las Vegas 17, visited my husband's family in Pennsylvania, traveled to South Florida, got a new tattoo, became one of 'those people' with a FitBit, rediscovered my love of running, visited with my parents (many times), bought some vintage goodies for myself and my home, worked, got a promotion (even though my pay grade is still the same), and began the process of removing my two+ years of black hair color. I want to go back to my red hair but it is going to be a while before I reach 'color nirvana.'

Viva 17 (the 5th to the 8th of April) was probably my favorite year so far. Not only did I have three Whirling Turban dresses in my wardrobe, I had an amazing time hanging out with friends, enjoying Las Vegas, dining, dancing, shopping, staying up way too late, and single-handedly helping to increase the stock value of Belvedere Vodka. Some Viva-goers drink PBR, some enjoy Sailor Jerry Rum, but this girl loves her vodka and tonics. Yes, indeed. Pass the lime wedge, please.

Viva came and went (always too quickly it seems) and before I could say "Shaheen," summer was upon us. Despite the fact the calendar read "June, July, August," the weather in the DC area was a far cry from the iron grip of humidity and stagnant heat that cripples the traffic-clogged, surburban metropolis. Instead of summer in DC, the cooler-than-average temperatures made it feel like a 'weekend in Maine.' I felt cheated while my co-workers and neighbors celebrated a break from the heat. Luckily, I got my 'heat fix' in August when I visited Boca Raton to spend time with my husband's family.

Before I went to Boca, I got a new tattoo from my amazing artist, Liaa Walter of Cirque du Rouge Tattoo in Washington, DC. As of this month, Liaa has been my one-and-only artist for two years! Liaa is not only talented, she is kind, sweet, intelligent, and wonderful to talk to when my skin is getting jabbed. Here is my new piece:

This is a maneki-neko to celebrate the love of my father and to honor him. My father, who is about to turn 75, has Alzheimer's disease. This month will mark three years since his official diagnosis. Daddy has good and bad days along with moments that can be very unsettling. I try to visit my parents often and I have learned in these last few years to just be there and love each moment. I cannot fight this process. I am powerless to stop the progression of Daddy's mental decline. However, I can keep up my visits, help out whenever I can, call Mom and Daddy everyday, and know that each day Daddy is with us as a gift.

Here is me and Daddy a couple of weeks ago:
Daddy was having a good day. He was happy, smiling, and we were having a beer after a long walk. Let me tell you, moments like this make me so filled with joy. I want to cry but I must find the joy right now. I have to. I need to.

In addition to traveling, getting a tattoo, family time, and work; I have decided to go from black hair:
In early September, I started the process to remove over two year's worth of black, 1evel 1B, hair color. I enjoyed my dark hair but it is time for something new. Since I was born a redhead (even though most of the golden red tones have naturally faded), my new color is easier to maintain because I will be able to go six weeks between salon touch-ups instead of four. My next appointment will be in two weeks (last one was on the 19th of September). I am excited to see how my hair will turn out!

I am all caught up and I got my 'blogging legs' back. You know what? It feels good to be back.
In the four years I have been setting my hair (before it was air-dry or blow dry then flat-ironed), I have tried several methods i.e. foam rollers, ceramic curling iron, pin curls (disaster), flocked velvet steam rollers (eugh), hot sticks, and hot rollers. After much experimenting, I have come to discover that hot rollers are the best way for me to set my hair and have it last for three days. My hair is naturally very fine and my scalp is very oily so despite my best efforts, I simply cannot make my set last longer. Things just get limp and icky.

Nevertheless, this is how I set my hair:

I wash with Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and condition with Pureology Hydrate Conditioner.

After towel-drying, I use a blend of Surface Bassu Oil Gold and Surface Trinity Protein Cream on my ends and my blond highlight section. Then I apply a quarter-size dollop of Ouidad Moisturizing Curl Gel to my hair. I comb through, section my bangs, apply my Rogaine, and then let things air-dry while I do my makeup.

After the face is done, I roll my bang section in grippy rollers, spray them with Layrite Grooming Spray, and then I finish drying overall with my hair dryer. I concentrate my dryer on my bang section to set the curl. The Layrite Grooming Spray is activated with heat.

While I am blow-drying my hair to ensure it is totally dry before setting*, I plug in my Remington Tight Curls hot rollers. There are 21 in a set but I wish there were 24. Anyway, once I have achieved completely dry hair, I roll my hair in sections with the hot rollers. I spray a tiny spritz of Layrite on the very ends of my hair and roll up. Finally, I secure the curl with a clip (from a 12 pack from Sally. I bought two). The U clips that came with the rollers were crap. My fine hair would just unroll and the roller itself would fall out onto the floor.

Here I am with my natural hair texture. Can we say 'fuzz ball?!' My bangs are set with the grippy rollers and I am about to set the rest of my hair:

I leave my rollers in for about 30 minutes. While my hair is cooling, I make the bed, do laundry, feed the cat, read CNN online, make lunch for work, and then get dressed.

Then, I unroll my curls, remove the grippy rollers, and I finger style my hair with a touch of Layrite Original Pomade. On my bang section, I use the husband's heavier type of Layrite Pomade (the darker colored jar). I shape my bangs, roll, and pin. Then I spray curls into their final shape with Aussie Instant Freeze Hairspray.

When I go to bed at night, I simply wrap a chiffon scarf around my set. The next day, I apply a light amount of TiGi Catwalk Dry Session Series Dry Shampoo to fluff curl and give it a refreshed look and feel. I re-pin my front roll and I may use hair combs. On the last day of my set, I will re-apply the dry shampoo spray and put my hair into a ponytail.

I like to set my hair because not only does it give me the vintage style I want, I look like I have more hair! Let me tell you, my hair is so thin and fine. I have had stylists in the past give me a blow-out and then flat-iron (standard for modern salons), and I hate it!!!! Sure, my hair looks silky but it also showcases how little hair I have. I feel so bald! Oh what I would do for more hair.

Anyway, all pouting aside, I love to set my hair because I can make my style last longer, I wash my delicate hair less, my hair is vintage-looking, and I look like I actually have a good head of hair! Curl = volume!

So, what is your "tried and true" hair routine?

*Please, take it from me, never EVER use any type of direct heat from rollers, curling irons, flat irons, etc on damp hair! Even slightly damp hair will be damaged. Doing so causes your hair to be boiled and your cuticle destroyed. One of those purchases took place in an antique mall in South Florida. I bought a heavy, smooth rootbeer bangle that was listed and priced as Bakelite but it was in fact, fake. I was just starting to collect and still unaware of how to properly tell if a piece was real or not.

What is Fakelite? Fakelite is imitation Bakelite that can have the same look, weight, feel, detailing, colors, marbling, and carving style as real, authentic Bakelite pieces. I have heard from others that a few fakelite pieces can even smell like Bakelite!

I wanted to add pictures showing examples of fakelite but I do not want to get in trouble. Most of the Fakelite I encounter has been found on Etsy and eBay and if I post someone's listing pictures, I may find myself in hot water.

So here are some pictures of REAL Bakelite from my collection to familiarize yourself:

Notice the carvings are basic, not super crazy detailed? See the marbling on the end-of-day pieces? See the colors?

Sadly, I have been finding A LOT of fakelite on Etsy recently. The fakelite typically in question is usually a bangle with overly ornate carvings and the colors are too marbled. The bangles are too thick, way too heavy, and the colors are odd. A while back, I saw a bangle that went from red, yellow to green! So fake! What really tips me off when a bangle is fake is the type of carving. I have seen carved dolphins with big bubbles and sea life!

Real Bakelite usually has more simple carvings. You may find real pieces with cut-outs, rhinestones, round grooves that encircle an entire bangle (like a record), leaves, rose petals, etc. But dolphins? FAKE!!!

What burns my biscuits about fakelite is that some sellers will claim a piece passed all the tests (friction, 409, hot water, simichrome, etc) and they will charge Bakelite prices. However, if a piece is listed as 'fakelite' and the price reflects that, then great! I may even buy it if it's cute! But when fakelite is passed off as actual Bakelite, that is wrong!

I recently found a few links for helping distinguish fakelite from Bakelite:
And here is a fabulous post from 2012 by amazing vintage blogger, Brittany, of Va-Voom Vintage:

http://www.vavoomvintageblog.com/2012/03/how-to-identify-bakelite.html

I wrote this post in the hopes of helping others who may be in the infant stages of starting their own Bakelite collections. If I can give just one bit of advice, I would suggest looking for Bakelite in person especially before venturing online to buy. Many antique malls, antique stores, car boot sales, charity shops, and swap meets will have a few bits of authentic Bakelite for sale. Familiarize yourself with the colors, the smell (do a friction test with your fingers and then smell your fingers), the weight, the sound (Bakelite should have a heavy clunk not a light "tink tink"), marbling, and the carvings. Also, the inside of a real bangle or the back of earrings, brooches, etc will be seamless. There will be no pour marks or branding. The surface may have a patina or age spots. Learn the proper characteristics so when you shop online or visit the antique mall, you will have a better determination of what to buy and what to avoid.
What is about Shaheen dresses that make my heart sing? It is the lush fabric, the figure-flattering designs, or the vast variety of brightly colored, mid-century, tropical prints? It is all of those things and more! I recently purchased my first two Whirling Turban dresses and I simply adore them! They are worth every pretty penny! I know I will enjoy them for many years. The quality and attention to detail are bar none.

Even though one of my 'vintage must haves' on my list has been fulfilled, I am still lusting for my very own Alfred Shaheen creation. Every time I see one in person at Viva or online on Esty or eBay, I heavily sigh with unrequited want and desire. Whenever I spot a girl Viva in her Shaheen and part of me wants to run
over to her and ask, "where did you get your dress?! How much?!" But, I
would feel weird about doing so. I mean, how rude would that be!

First and foremost, Shaheen's designs are expensive. I often see prices on Etsy range from $190 to $500. I have also seen items listed for $900 or more. I have been fortunate to find dresses in my size (36-27-38) but not in my price range or not in good condition. I sometimes stumble upon a great deal in lovely condition but it is usually too small. Either I need to lose weight or keep looking! Since I refuse to give up my addictions to Starbucks latte and dark chocolate infused with sea salt caramel, I need to keep looking.

I think the phrase, "all good things come to those who wait" is going to be my mantra in my search. I just need to be patient.

In the mean time, I have this gorgeous website to inspire me and whet my appetite:

So, do you have any Shaheens? How many? What era is your favorite? 50s? 60s? 70s? Where is a good place to buy/search?
Back in late October, I visited my tattoo artist, Liaa Walter of Cirque Du Rouge, for new tattoos and touch-ups. As soon as I completed payment at the end of our session, I made an appointment for early January for more-touch ups and additions to current pieces. (Liaa currently has a 3 month wait).

In October, Liaa was going to add snowflakes to the cherry tree on my back but she wanted to plan them out as stencils instead of drawing them directly on my skin.

My January 10th appointment involved a lot of additions, touch-ups, and of course the snowflakes. Normally, I just have one area done at a time. However, this visit we did multiple sections. Let me tell you, sleeping for the first few days afterwards was very difficult!

Nevertheless, at the end of our session (2.5 hours), everything was done and looked amazing!

Here are the photos!
Liaa touched up the yellow in the center of my Colorado Columbine and intensified the lavender tones in the white section.
Here are the new snowflakes. Liaa also added the small, pale blue dots throughout.
On my left arm, a cherry blossom was added on the end (closer to where my arm bends). More small blue dots were placed and some of the blooms were intensified with color.
This blue purple lotus was added to my lower right arm. It is just stunning! The colors are incredible!

Of all the work I had done that day, the red-pink cherry blossom touch-ups on my upper back hurt the most. I thought my lower right arm (near my elbow) would be more painful but alas, it was my upper back. I asked Liaa why the same areas she tattooed in October seemed easier to tolerate the first time around and she said, "I think the body remembers. And we just did those areas recently."

Further, during my aftercare, I noticed the lower areas on my arms seemed to heal slower. I asked a good friend of mine (who happens to have an impressive body of work) and she said those spots were slower to heal on her as well. Maybe the closer to the elbow is more sensitive?

When it comes to getting new pieces, I think I am done for a while. However, I do want the rosy paintbrush flower on my lower left leg/ankle touched up. The colors are light pink and I would like them to be more of a vivid magenta, like the real flowers.

In the end, I am loving my body art more and more!

In December 1996, I went to Breckenridge, Colorado for my first ski vacation. I was still in college, 21 years old, and a new bride (married in May of that year). After retrieving our luggage from the airport, the in-laws, husband, and I made our way west toward the mountains. I was surprised at how flat Aurora and the greater Denver area was! Instead of a cozy alpine landscape ripe with majestic, snow-covered peaks; the terrain was a smooth prairie that was drab and brown due to winter's steely grip. However, as we drove further into the foothills past Denver, I caught my first glimpse of the Rocky Mountains through the 'Picture Frame Bridge' that straddled Interstate 70. In this very moment, I knew instantly Colorado was a place of magic and wonder.

There is something about mountains, snow, and skiing that just stir my soul. I feel alive, like I am capable of anything. I think I can attribute these sentiments to my heritage. My father was born and raised in northern Norway (Lofoten) where skiing and snow are part of daily life. It snows in Lofoten for a majority of the year and for almost as long as there has been snow and people, skiing has played a huge role in Norwegian culture and history.

The above photo is my father, age 5 or 6 (circa 1945/46)

As my father used to say, "In Norway, if you can walk, you can ski." Most children learn to ski at a very early age. I, however, learned to ski at 13 in Norway. I was there with my parents, visiting my father's side of the family for the
the first time. It was an amazing experience. I loved
meeting family members I had never met, learning to ski with my dad,
eating my aunt's delicious food, and seeing the Northern Lights. The
entire trip brought out something in me that has stayed with me to this day. This especially applies to my love of skiing.

During the first days I was learning to ski, kids my age and younger were flying down the mountain like Lindsay Vonn and Stein Eriksen. Me? Well, not only was I embarrassed by my lack of skills, I looked like a cross between a newborn baby deer and the "agony of defeat guy" from the 80s ABC TV Show "Wide World of Sports." I tried my best to master my skis and even though it took me a few weeks, I finally got the hang of it. By the end of the visit, I was begging my dad to take me out to the mountains. I was hooked.

By the time I went to Breckenridge in '96, seven years had gone by since I strapped on a pair of skis. The first day on the slopes, I was nervous. Nervous? No, that is not the right word. I was terrified. That is it, "terrified." Due to my shattered confidence, my husband suggested I take a ski lesson. I begrudgingly agreed and the next day, I made my way to meet my instructor and fellow ski students.

My instructor was a South American with a tall, lithe build. His melodic accent was charming. His tan face, weathered from sun, wind, and cold painted a stark contrast against the shock-white snow. My heart was pounding and I felt like a teenager who just transferred to a new school and it was the first day of class. "But, I am not gonna know anybody!"

The students were all adults, mostly couples. None of them had skied before. This made me feel better. Not that I wanted to compete with anyone but the ski lessons with my dad were sure to come in handy. As the day unfolded, I noticed the other students were falling down, skiing in a wedge (skis in a triangle pattern), their poles going in all directions, or going really slow. One woman from Mexico City was saying in Spanish, "Make it stop! No! No! NO! I do not want to do thiiissssss!"

The woman slid down the mountain, picking up speed, and like an out of control 18-wheeler with a blow-out going down a steep decline, she fell fast and hard. YARD SALE! (This is what skiers say when we see ski equipment (skis/poles) scattered all over the hill). I quickly skied down to her and then out of nowhere, I hockey-stopped (a quick parallel turn where your skis swoop together and you stop suddenly). I bent down to see if she was ok and she said she was fine but embarrassed and wanted to quit. I felt bad for her.

As I was about to ski down to the rest of the group, I saw my instructor looking at me with a sly grin. As I approached, he asked loudly, "Where did THAT come from?!" I realized, "Oh wow! He's right. My dad taught me that. I have not done in years!" I looked the instructor and said, "I have skied before but it has been seven years since my last time. Things are starting to come back to me now. Weird, huh?" He smiled and laughed, his white teeth sparkling with delight, "No! That is a gooooood thing! Awesome, duude! Awesome! Now, let's see what you can really do!"

By the end of the day, I am telling you, I felt like I had skied every day since that first day in Norway. Something unlocked in my body and mind. My legs, my arms, and whole body found their rhythm. I felt like I was born to ski.

After 1996, I did not ski again until 2005. Unlike the first Colorado trip, I found myself with 25 extra pounds on my body. My cardiovascular capacity was non-existent. I was 29 years old, about to be 30 in a couple of months but I felt like I was 99. Unlike the success of my '96 visit, this time around was awful, especially in the first days. Every time I fell, my ski pants would pop open and I had to struggled to fasten them. My heart thumped like it was pumping mud. I was sweaty, tired, frustrated, and I felt fat. Despite being able to "get my ski legs back" eventually, the '05 Breckenridge trip was an epic fail. As I was packing my skis up the day before flying back to DC, I said "Forget it. I am not doing this anymore."

When I turned 30, I experienced something I can only describe as life-changing. I was 155 pounds, wore a size 12/14, my blood pressure was 150/90. My doctor advised me to lose "at least 15 pounds" on at least two occasions. For a while, I ignored her advice. I avoided mirrors and every huff and puff I exerted walking up and down stairs was conveniently forgotten. I ate McDonald's, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and Ben and Jerry's every day.

But a month after 30, I woke up in my mother's house in tears. It was Mother's Day and I knew, I was NOT fine. I was sad. I was unhealthy. And dammit, I wanted to ski again! I needed to ski again. In that moment, in my pjs, I said, "This ends now."

The next day, Monday the 9th of May, 2005, I called my doctor and made an appointment. My visit was in mid-June. I weighed in at 154.6. I wanted to cry. I thought, "How could I let things get like this and stay like this for so long?" The nurse staff took two vials of blood and my doctor gave me a physical. A week later, I received a call that my blood pressure was a bit high and my cholesterol was 198. I was told to make another appointment for a follow up and to create a "game plan" for my health. In July, my doctor gave me a diet and exercise plan. I was also instructed to keep a daily journal to keep track of my food, workouts, and progress. It was hard at first and I felt like screaming many times. I wanted to eat pizza and New York Super Fudge Chunk! Forget this hummus and celery junk!"

In December of 2005, I had my final weigh-in. I was 122 pounds! I wanted to pass out! I did it!!! I felt incredible. I knew that when February of 2006 came (time for the annual ski trip), I would be so ready!

A few days before my ski venture, I tried on my previous year's ski clothes. I was practically drowning in them. They were huge! I went to the local ski shop, Ski Chalet, to buy new gear but all I could find in my size (size 4/6 in ski wear, not street wear), were ski pants. I had to borrow a ski jacket from my sister. It fit beautifully. Within days, I was back in Colorado and I was so happy. My spirit felt lifted. My heart fluttered with joy as my strong lungs breathed in the crisp, clean, cold mountain air. This was pure bliss. I was where I wanted to be and where I NEEDED to be.

I made my way over to the Beaverun Quicksilver chair lift and got on. My new body felt light, yet powerful. The lift gently glided me over the pearly slopes, glistening with fresh hope and promise. The moment my ski tips touched the snow-covered ground as I pushed away from the chair, I let out a loud "Whooooo!" A few people looked over at me. Oh well, they can stare, I didn't care. I felt good!

I skied down ski runs with ease. I felt like I was flying. Runs and turns that were difficult to navigate the previous year were now a cake walk. As I returned to the lift at the base of Peak 9, I hockey-stopped my skis and the lift attendant scanned my lift ticket. I could not stop smiling. The attendant asked, "Having a good day?" I replied, "You know it, dude!" I got back on the lift and thought, "I am home."

It is my father's love of skiing that introduced me to the sport and thus, Colorado. Further, it was my love of skiing and Colorado that made me the healthier and stronger woman I am today. So, with that said, I say "I am thankful, I am grateful. Daddy, Colorado, I love you. You are both my most precious treasures."

For the longest time, I have pined for my very own Whirling Turban dress. After spending several months browsing the website and then seeing a few of the dresses in person at this year's Viva, my obsession was firmly cemented. I HAD to have one. A few weeks ago, I decided to 'take the plunge' and finally buy my first dress. Yes, I said "first." Anyone who has the honor and privilege of owning a Whirling Turban usually gets another. Like Lays' brand potato chips, "you just can't have one."

The dress I purchased is a two-piece sarong dress with a detachable strap. The fabric is a gorgeous blue silver metallic lurex type material that just sparkles and shines. I have NEVER seen anything like it. Moreover, the fabric has a lovely weight to it. It is not too heavy or too thin. The details are stunning and the measurements are perfect for my body shape.

As soon as the dress arrived, I immediately tried it on. The fit was incredible. Even though the dress was expensive, let me tell you, it is SO SO SO worth it! Talk about an investment! I can see myself wearing this dress for years and years to come!

I bought the dress for my company's annual holiday party. The party took place on Saturday, the 7th of December at the Hyatt Regency in Reston, Virginia. Big Daddy, aka el hub, wore a vintage-style black tuxedo. I, of course, wore my Whirling Turban dress! I paired it with vintage rhinestone jewelry, my silver Pollys, and one of my lucite bags.

Here is Big Daddy (isn't he just dreamy?!):
I had a great time at the party (even though my entree, grilled salmon, was not good)! I had a couple of vodka tonics and a glass of wine. (Party time!) Everyone was complimenting my dress! I felt so amazing! When the night was over, I was sad to take the dress off and change into my pjs. Nevertheless, we have a 10-day family cruise coming up over Christmas and I am going to wear my dress again for sure!!

So, for anyone contemplating whether or not to buy a Whirling Turban, all I can say is, do it!! You will not regret it! Now, if you decide to buy a dress of your own, please take some advice from me: when selecting your dress, please go on your measurements! Do not guess! These dresses are made to fit your body and hug your curves! If you have any questions regarding fit, please ask! The people at Whirling Turban are very helpful when it comes to answering questions! They are quick to answer e-mail and very friendly to do business with. My overall Whirling Turban experience was above and beyond any expectations!

I am so happy with my dress, I went ahead and ordered another last night!

Now, I will have two Whirling Turban dresses for my cruise! Because this cruise is 10 days long, there are four formal nights and you know a girl has to look her best! ;)

Again, if you are considering buying a Whirling Turban, you must! The quality, the detailing, the materials, and the customer service are simply wonderful!Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18374686921796483382noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7252080759994565579.post-47194229225756028442013-11-14T12:22:00.001-08:002013-11-14T12:22:29.988-08:00Tales from a Lazy Saturday (Veteran's Day weekend)This past weekend was truly a lazy one! As a government contractor, I was fortunate enough to enjoy a "three day weekend" due to the fact Monday, November the 11th, was Veteran's Day. Most local, state, and federal government employees and contractors have federal holidays off. These days include, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Veteran's Day. Banks and the postal service are closed as well.

Nevertheless, thanks to a longer weekend, the husband (aka Big Daddy) and I decided to stay home, relax, do laundry, make dinner, and enjoy a cocktail (or two!).

Just for fun, here are the highlights from our lazy Saturday!

I woke up early. Even though I wanted to sleep in, my body was up thanks to my daily schedule. Instead of falling back into my cozy bed, I got up, made coffee, had a lovely breakfast with Big Daddy, and hung out with 'le cat.'

After breakfast, I watched "Stalag 17" as I worked on my vintage clothing "fix/repair" pile. Once in a while, you gotta fix those popped seams, falling hems, and loose buttons!

By the time it was lunch (well, 2 pm), I finally spruced myself up and did my hair!
Now that it is fall and going into winter, it is time to pair bobby socks with my beloved Re-Mix wedges!
I intended to make dinner at home but Big Daddy's mother (aka Mammaleh), invited us over. We had cocktails, steak on the grill (shrimp for me), and a salad.

To end the night, we came home and Big Daddy retreated to the deck and enjoyed his beloved, vintage pipe and had a scotch.
Since it was Veteran's Day weekend and Big Daddy is a veteran (almost 10 years US Army Infantry), I wanted him to have a few super-chill, relaxed days off! I am proud of him and his service to this great nation!

And for all of you who have served, I want to say "thank you" for your esteemed service and dedication.
(Royal Dux)

Over a month ago, I found an amazing pair of vintage repro ceramic cats done in the "Royal Dux" style on Etsy. I have been looking for a real Dux set for a long time and when happen to find a couple of pairs, they were very expensive or had damage.

The "Royal Dux" company, originally known as "Duxer Porzellanmanufaktur," was founded in Czechoslovakia in 1860 by Eduard Eichler. This brand is known for its distinctive seal, or "pink triangle:"

Royal Dux created vases, figurines, and ornate sculptures. The designs ranged from art nouveau opulence to modern simplicity. The modern cat design became very popular in the 50s and early 60s. Here are a a few examples of authentic originals:
I would LOVE to get my paws on these cats! But, as I stated earlier, these Dux cats are usually very pricey and often difficult to find!

Despite being unable to track down the Royal Dux atomic kitties of my MCM dreams, I found a seller on Etsy who makes faithful reproductions using vintage molds!

https://www.etsy.com/listing/117109770/modern-atomic-retro-ceramic-mod-cats?ref=listing-shop-header-0

Here is the pair I purchased:

And here is how they look on my mantle in my den/TV room:

The cats measure 4.5 inches tall and are 5.5 inches long. The colors are bold, bright orange and vivid teal blue. I love the fact the cats were glazed in complimentary colors! Total opposites on the color wheel! The result is an intense pop of color on my otherwise boring white-painted, brick mantle!

I am very happy with my new repro cats! They are perfect. However, if I ever stumble upon a real Royal Dux cat or cats when I am antiquing, I may grab them (especially if the price and/or condition is right).

So, if you are looking for a little bit of atomic pottery for your MCM abode, you have to give Desert Arts Pottery on Etsy a look!
Ever since I discovered Besame Cosmetics four years ago, I have been totally hooked on their gorgeous, vintage packaging and amazing product line! Whether it's their intensely-pigmented lipsticks or their smashing foundation, Besame nailed it when it comes to combining vintage aesthetic with product quality and performance!

http://www.besamecosmetics.com/home.cfm

Besame Cosmetics is based in Glendale, California and is lead by the amazing Gabriela Herandez and her husband, Fergus. I have had the pleasure of speaking with them both over the phone (questions regarding orders or products) and not only are they very nice, their adoration and dedication to their work is incredible. Simply put, when it comes to customer service and quality, I cannot recommend Besame Cosmetics enough!

Less than two weeks ago, I received my most recent order from Besame. I purchased the brand new lipstick shade in "American Beauty" and the re-formulated, re-released Besame Souffle Foundation in the shade "Bisque."

Let's start with the lipstick! According to the Besame website, the Classic Color Lipstick in "American Beauty" (.12 ounces, $22 USD) is a faithful reproduction of a popular lipstick shade from 1945. And let me tell you, this lipstick is indeed a 'beauty' of a shade! It is a vibrant cranberry-red with a pink-blue undertone. The color itself falls between the bright "Besame Red" and the lush, darker cherry-toned red, "Cherry Red." Imagine if "Besame Red" and "Cherry Red" had a baby. The result would be "American Beauty."

In addition, for those of you familiar with Make Up For Ever's Rouge Artist Intense Lipstick in #45 (available at Sephora and Sephora.com for $19 USD), that color and the "American Beauty" are very similar, if not the same shade. For further reference, MAC's lip pencil in "Cherry" is a perfect match!

And as for all of my other Besame shades, "American Beauty" boasts a strong color payoff with a semi-matte finish that clings to the lips without drying, bleeding, or feathering!

Here is me wearing the lipstick:

As I stated, I also bought the re-issued Besame Souffle Foundation (.56 ounces for $38.00) in shade "Bisque." "Bisque" is the lightest shade in the range (there are 5 shades total). For reference, I am a MAC NW15, a Giorgio Armani 02, a Bobbi Brown Porcelain, and in most brands I am considered an "Ivory." I have oily and sensitive skin that is neutral yet leans pink. This "Bisque" shade is absolutely perfect for my skintone!

Besame had a previous version of this foundation that had a creamy, whipped consistency. It came is a jar container that was discontinued and then re-released in a squeeze tube. The tube version of the foundation was phased out and is now back it its original jar form. This new foundation is a firm, concealer-like texture that is very smooth and pigmented. A little product goes a long way! I use a wedge sponge for application and the foundation goes on like a dream.

Further, this foundation is not only different in texture, it features a new, skincare ingredient called "Collageneer."

Besame describes Collageener on its website as follows:

"Collageneer®, a patented active ingredient derived from Lupin seed
coatings, has the ability not only to increase the synthesis of type I
collagen (the most abundant collagen, which diminishes with age), but
also to promote production of a high quality collagen that gives the
skin its firmness and elasticity.

This extraordinary foundation provides outstanding coverage with a
light and silky smooth texture for a flawless face. Can be used for
full coverage as foundation or concealer.

Available in 5 shades, packaged in vintage style cream glass jars. Fragrance-Free, Paraben-Free."

Here is me wearing both the lipstick and foundation:
I have been wearing the Souffle Foundation daily since I received it and it has not caused any breakouts or irritations! I use a blot sheets to maintain my look throughout the day and I have not experienced any caking or oxidation (turns orange). I simply love this stuff!

In addition, today I tried a new method of foundation application I saw on RuPaul's Drag Race last night. (They are replaying Season 1 on Logo on Monday nights). Nevertheless, I noticed one of the drag queens using a hair dryer on her potted, full-coverage foundation to sheer it out. This morning, used my hair dryer on my foundation for 10-15 seconds. I let the surface get a little shiny and I stopped. I then applied with a sponge and wow! The result was just smooth, smooth, SMOOTH!! My skin looks even better!

So, if you are looking for a pretty berry red and/or a new foundation, you have to give Besame's "American Beauty" lipstick and re-released Besame Souffle Foundation a try! After posting about my new vintage eye wear the other day, a fellow blogger and friend of mine asked me how to measure vintage frames. She wears modern frames and wants a vintage pair but in many cases the frames she buys (particularly online) are too big or too small. Being able to decipher all those numbers can be tricky but I have found an AMAZING website that will help you determine your correct size!

http://optometristattic.com/measure.htm

I buy most of my frames online (Etsy and eBay). I occasionally find frames at various flea markets, antique malls, and at events like Viva (Allyn Scura is pure cat eye heaven). After wearing vintage glasses for 15 years, I am familiar with my measurements. However, if you are not sure about how to measure, just visit the link above and I bet you this site will help you find that vintage pair that fits like a dream!

This past Saturday, my sister and I went to Southeast DC to visit the District Flea Market.

http://districtflea.com/

The day was sunny but the air was crisp with a windy autumn bite. I wore my Freddies of Pinewood classic indigo jeans, a 50s camp shirt, and a red 49er jacket. I thought about wearing a housedress with tights but jeans seemed like a better, more logical (and warmer) choice.

As we grabbed a hot coffee, we browsed several booths containing vintage records, hi-fis, books, prints, art, clothes (mostly 60s-80s but I did spot a cute 50s patio set with gold ric rac but it had holes), jewelry, wall scones, lighting, mirrors, melmac, shabby chic furniture, vintage eyewear, and mid-century furniture. In addition to the shopping vendors, the District Flea also boasts food vendors.

Now, I admit that I went to this market with a few doubts. I was not expecting to walk away with anything. I was hoping to see the vintage eyewear booth and maybe stumble upon some bakelite, but my hopes were reserved. However, my doubts were soon proven wrong when I found two Lane two-tiered end tables in gorgeous condition. I was floored. The tables only had minor stratches (nothing Scott's Liquid Gold couldn't fix!) and the seller wanted $250 for the pair. I recently spotted similar tables on eBay for $500 or so. I took notice of the tables and decided to think about it. After a few sips of coffee and some brief hemming and hawing, I went back and told the gentleman, "You have a deal."

While I was coming down from my "end table high," my sister and I found the vintage eyewear booth. I was in total acetate, cateye, and aluminum heaven. I tried on a few pairs of various colors and styles and then found the pair I wanted: a 50s silver aluminum modified cateye frame for $55. The hinges needed to be cleaned but overall, they were perfect.

I already own four pairs of vintage frames that have been fit with my prescription: a solid black cateye, a clear acetate and soft gold cateye, a pale blue and clear acetate cateye, and lastly a black, brushed silver, and clear acetate cateye. In addition, I have three pairs of vintage sunglasses also fitted with my near-sighted/astigmatism prescription. I am addicted to vintage frames. Yes, it's true. I am not ashamed.

Here are my new frames:

<strike> </strike>After returning home from the flea market, I placed the two Lane tables in their spots in my living room. I treated each table with the Liquid Gold and then let them cure. Then, I accompanied Big Daddy to his barber appointment, we had lunch, and we went to my local optician to have my frames fit with my prescription. I love them! There is nothing like a great pair of vintage cateye glasses! I used to despise the fact I needed to wear glasses (modern frames are typically boring to me) but once I discovered vintage frames, I am happy to wear glasses again! It is just another way to accessorize and accent my daily vintage style!

So, overall, this weekend was a huge success! I got some pretty new frames to wear and my home is continuing to be updated in proper, mid-century style!

What are your newest vintage treasures?
It has been a while since I blogged anything! In my absence, I have been working, running more, visiting family, Halloween came and went, and I had more body art done! The last tattoo I had was a bright pink peony cover-up done in late August. As I was finalizing my payment and tip after my peony was finished, I made another appointment with my artist, Liaa Walter!

I have been getting tattooed by Liaa (who is super sweet and amazingly talented) for just over a year. I love her work and getting tattooed by her feels more like two friends chatting and hanging out rather than sitting in a chair and getting poked with needles.

On the late morning of Halloween, I ventured from the suburbs of Northern Virginia into Northeast Washington, DC. Despite the fact I left my house super early, I ended up arriving to the shop 15 minutes late. The DC Metro was seemingly running slower than normal. (It is always running slow but this day it was especially lagging behind schedule).

As soon as I arrived, I was greeted by Meredith (shop maven, front desk authority, and all around great gal) who directed me up the third floor where Liaa was preparing her work station. At this point, I was feeling a bit nervous and stressing a bit about the pain. The back is not an easy spot to get tattooed. The spine and nerve endings can make things a bit tough. However, I came prepared! I had Vitamin Water Zero and my beloved Kashi granola bars to keep me hydrated and glucose levels up during the procedure.

Before Liaa began the actual tattoo, she drew a freehand cherry tree branch and blossoms to join a celtic design I have in the middle of my upper back. In addition, Liaa connected the new branch segment to an existing cherry tree branch on my left arm/shoulder I had done in 2007.

Here is a little background: In 2000, I had a Celtic triskele dragon design created. It was my second tattoo. I was 25. I recall the actual tattoo process was not pleasant. Instead of breathing slowly in and out, I held my breath and as a result, I almost passed out. Moreover, I remember not eating beforehand. Let tell you, eating a proper, balanced meal 1-2 hours before a tattoo session is VITAL. If you go dehydrated and hungry, you WILL be miserable.

Nevertheless, 13 years after my dragons were done, I noticed the design looked like a faded mess and a bit like "peel and stick." "Peel and stick" means the tattoo looked like a floating sticker. It appeared to be disconnected from my other tattoos.

After Liaa finished drawing out my new design, I took a quick look in the mirror, loved it, and then we began the session. The pain was not as intense as I anticipated. However, the previous session on my lower back (my peony), that was rough. Wow. The total work took about an hour and a half and this is what it looks like now:

In the time I been away from blogging, I have continued to work, got another cold, then allergies, and family visits. In addition, I have also got a new hair cut. The story behind it is peppered with a variety of ups and downs.

As some of you may know, I began to grow out my Bettie bangs into an angled style. I started this process in August. Despite my initial hesitation to let go of my once-heralded look, I got the cut and felt great. I was ready for a change! However, this elation was soon eclipsed by the news that my stylist of one year, a stylist who was finally becoming accustomed to my hair, told me she was moving out of state in late September. I was sad. I am happy she is finding her bliss in her new home and new life, but damn it! My hair has needs! So, the quest to find a new stylist began.

In late September, I discovered a new salon in my area. The website looked great and the vibe was hip, edgy. I made my appointment for a stylist who seemed to have a good grasp of vintage styles. On the day of my appointment, I was nervous (silly, I know) and excited. I arrived on time and after over 15 minute wait, I was sent back to get a root touch up and a couple of foils on my emerging blond highlight in my growing bangs.

After color, the stylist cut a section of hair behind my bangs. The overall look appeared to form a deep, wide triangle in my hairline. Because I wanted to grow out my bangs to do a "suicide roll" and/or a side-swept look, I needed a more dramatic bang line. The stylist also cut a couple of inches of my ends to help my wet sets shape better during home styling. Needless to say, I felt great. I found "vintage hair heaven" but alas, something was amiss in hair world and I couldn't quite put my finger on it.

Upon the completion of my mystical hair experience, I made my way over to the reception desk to check out. Then I heard, "That will be $155.00 today, please." What? What now? $155.00 for a basic highlight foil in my bangs, a cut, and root-touch up? My old salon was $105!! How much is full color gonna cost?! Good lord. I walked out there feeling both magical and in shock. My hair was "Breck Girl" glowing but my wallet was crying and shaking in a corner, like it was just mugged in Central Park circa 1977.

A couple of days later, I washed my hair and when I was combing it out after my shower, I noticed several places where my roots were not touched up at all. I have natural light auburn roots (level 7) and my color is blue black (level 1). The contrast was really evident. Not only was I overcharged, my roots were patchy and uneven. I was pissed.

In spite of the fact I want perfection (especially for that price), I am reasonable. I do not expect me and a new stylist to be "on the same page" the very first visit, but I at least expect my color to be done correctly. Needless to say, I will not be going back there.

But, this story may have a happy ending! One of my friends who blogs, is an amazing seamstress, talented knitter, loves vintage, adores makeup, and is an awesome fun gal, is actually a board certified stylist in the next state. She is very knowledgeable with vintage hair and how to create the looks I seek.

Even though my hair is okay for now and I am without a stylist at the moment, I am able to do a couple of new looks, apres-Bettie bangs:
The first look is with my bangs rolled back and the second is as they are styled forward in a side-swept look. As the months progress, I cannot wait to see what new styles I can create!

So, do you have any hair "she-mergencies?"

For the last 6+ years, I have had "Bettie bangs." There was, however, a brief period in 2010 when I tried to grow my bangs out in the hopes of achieving more styling variety. Alas, my feeble attempts to "stay strong" and resist the charms of Bettie bangs eventually fell victim to my stylist's shears. Before I could say, "I am trying something new," the Bettie bangs emerged victorious.

Despite my love/hate/love relationship with my bangs, I have decided to grow them out this time, for real. There will be no wavering! My mind is made up. I realize that it's not that I "hate" my Bettie bangs, but I am ready for a change.

In late July, my stylist, Jesi, cut and shaped my bangs into the beginnings of a side-swept bang. I want to be able to wear them like this (albeit a little longer):

I also would like the option of rolling my bangs back so I can do styles like this:

As of right now, I can do a reverse roll, although it's small:

In the last 6 weeks that I had my Bettie bangs re-shaped, they are still on the short side. The side-angle look is becoming more and more evident but I realize I will not have full effect/length until probably the end of the year or later.

In the interim, I have purchased a side-swept bang clip-in from Hairdo on the days I want a side-bang look:

The clip-in is easy to use and is washable. I shampoo, rinse, and air-dry. The piece is made with synthetic hair so do not curl with heat or it will melt!

Here is me with the clip-in:
Tattoos! Whether you have them or not and whether you like them or not, tattoos are a fixture in the rockabilly/vintage culture. Despite the fact that mainstream society still hesitant to accept body art, I have never felt more proud to collect and display my tattoos!

One morning in late May 2000, I woke up and decided I wanted a tattoo. I was 25 years old and about to start graduate school. I was the antithesis of the impulsive 18 year-old hellbent on getting drunk and "getting inked." I was a married, mild-mannered travel agent with a mortgage who was eager to earn a Master's Degree in Spanish. By the end of the day, I had a simple black star tattoo on my lower left back/upper hip. The entire piece took 10 minutes and was the size of a quarter. I loved it. A couple of months later, I found myself getting another tattoo, a Celtic design that was larger, boasted some color, and located on my upper back, between my shoulders. That piece was a bit more painful and as a result, I told myself I was "done" with tattoos. Less than a year later, I had a black line moon tattoo on my lower right leg/ankle. So much for "being done."

Regardless of my suburban and professional life, I continued to get more tattoos. I am not sure if my fascination with tattoos stems from being an artist but there is just something about body art that enchants me. Nevertheless, as I ventured further into the world of ink, I transitioned from small, basic black outline pieces to large, full-color designs. Whenever I completed a tattoo session, I thought, "that's it. This time I am done." Nope. Not by a long shot.

In early 2007, I was preparing for my annual Colorado ski trip 2008 and I had this idea that it would be "cool" for me to get a half-sleeve cherry blossom and snowflake tattoo. I thought there's no better way to capture my love of Colorado than getting tattooed in Colorado. With this burning scheme in my head, I called a tattoo studio in Breckenridge and made an appointment for the last full day I was in town.

On the morning of my appointment, I woke up feeling a nervousness I never experienced. All of the tattoos I sat for previously were small and quick. This tattoo, however, would be the first "big piece." I took a few deep breaths and told myself I could do it. Later that afternoon, I met my artist, Kauri Tiyme, and after filling out necessary paperwork, I sat in her chair and the next five and a half hours flew by! When Kauri was done, I had a masterpiece on my skin. I felt amazing. I had the privilege of sitting in Kauri's chair for five more sessions, continuing in late summer of 2007 and ending on the 24th of September 2008. Sadly, on the 22nd of October, 2008, Kauri was killed. In the wake of Kauri's untimely and unfair death, I did not get tattooed for four years. I couldn't. I felt like if I got another tattoo, I would be cheapening Kauri's memory.

However, a year ago, I had a talk with a good friend of Kauri's and she told me that Kauri would have wanted me to move on and that the process of getting tattooed again could be a way to "let go" of the sorrow I was harboring for so long.

In October 2012, I sat for beautiful alpine forget-me-not floral and starburst tattoo with artist Liaa Walter of Cirque Du Rouge Tattoo studio in Washington, D.C. I had the piece done on my inner left forearm. After our session was over, I felt a cleansing and lifting that I cannot describe. Words will never do it justice.

Since last fall, Liaa has touched up a couple of tattoos and created two lovely pieces for me. In May, I had my father's words added to a flower tattoo I had done in 2006 and then fixed by Kauri in 2008.

As some of you may recall, my father has Alzheimer's and as a result, he is not able to write much anymore. This tattoo was created by tracing my dad's words he wrote to me in a letter on my 18th birthday. A couple of years ago, I found the letter whilst sorting through storage bins in my closet. This letter is one of my prized possessions and I can so happy Liaa captured the little subtleties and nuances of my father's once beautiful handwriting.

And just last week, Liaa covered up my very first tattoo, the ugly star, with this gorgeous peony bowl of beauty flower:

I sat for this tattoo for nearly two hours. Let me tell you, it hurt. It hurt like hell. Due to the proximity of my spine, the nerve-endings are very sensitive because they branch out from the vertebrae. Thus, this was one painful piece. Despite the "ow factor," I am simply overjoyed with the stunning outcome! Moreover, in late October, on the afternoon of Halloween to be exact, I am going back to Liaa so she can touch up my Celtic design and add more to it. That tattoo is going to be a bit "squirrely," but I know I will endure.
First and foremost, I would like to apologize for my absence! This summer has been chock-full of travel, work, a vicious cold, sick kitties, and more work. Nevertheless, now that life is seemingly 'back to normal' (what is "normal" anyway?), I am anxious to jump back into blogging!

With that said, I would like to address the post at hand: Girl World. What exactly is "Girl World" you ask? Let me explain. Girl World is what I deem the subtle nuances, behaviors, and that energies that occur between women. When we are young, we learn quickly what sly glances signify and how whispers literally speak volumes. Moreover, we become familiar with the way a girlfriend can say "I'm fine" but we know she's is not. With a few questions along with that look that says, "Girl, I am here fore you. You can lean on me," she's confiding in you.

As we age, we develop a sixth sense that heralds a power that can be used for "good and evil." This sixth sense so-to-speak can be an amazing tool to reach out and connect with the other women in our lives. However, this same element can be utilized for sinister intents like spreading gossip, being catty, and basically talking smack to bring down your fellow sisters-in-arms.

To the outside world, the delicate and elusive forces at play go unnoticed. A snicker accompanied by a fast glance can often be construed as mere happenstance but in Girl World, it's a crushing cacophony of alienation and shame. We know they are talking about us. We feel it. In Girl World, we have a language all our own and we know it.

So, let me tell you how Girl World came to "strike" at Macy's Impulse Beauty in Boca Raton Town Center in Boca Raton, Florida. In early June, I went to Boca Raton to visit family and one day, I went to the Inglot counter for some needed products. As I approached the counter, I noticed a sales associate sitting in a chair at the adjacent Benefit counter. She sneered at me and turned to other employees and loudly stated, "I am NOT helping her." I was shocked. What? Did she just say that out loud? She knows I can hear, right? Wow. Just Wow.

After a deep breath and not wanting to get upset, I proceeded to browse at the various eyeshadows, pencils, and lipsticks. Within a few minutes, the Inglot sales associate came over and assisted me with my purchase. I ended up buying stuff because I wanted it but I really wanted to walk away and deny them the satisfaction of that sale. In addition, as the Inglot associate rang up my final purchase at the register, I overheard hushed voices saying, "Oh my god! I know! Her dress! Ha ha ha!!" The sales associate at the register was trying hard to keep a straight face as her colleagues carried on like bitchy teenage wannabes. I could tell she was in on the joke at my expense yet I did not have the chutzpah to say anything. Dammit. I feel like my makeup lust made me into a sitting duck, gossip fodder, and basically a sucker. I walked away and went back to my in-laws, feeling shitty.

When I returned home to D.C., I immediately filed a complaint with Macy's regarding my experience. I will tell you this, despite my cosmetic addiction and admiration for Inglot, I will NEVER EVER set foot in that Macy's again.

Even though I took the high road, I so wanted to tell those women to "**** Off!" I wanted to say, "Hey bitches! I know you are throwing shade at me! Cancel the sale! Where the **** is your supervisor?!" But, I didn't. I walked away. Was my lady-like demeanor and handling of the situation not the right way to conduct myself? I think I have more to lose if I "lose my cool." How do I navigate Girl World while holding my head high?

In June, Big Daddy (aka my husband) went to South Florida to visit his family, enjoy the sights, go boating with the fam, and to participate in the Hukilau 2013. The Hukilau is a tiki-themed event that takes place at the Sheraton Yankee Clipper and Mai-Kai Polynesian Restaurant in Fort Lauderdale.

The event started Thursday, the 6th of June and ended Sunday, the 9th. Big Daddy and I wanted to do the entire event but to due our procrasination and not getting full event tickets in time, we only got tickets for Friday night, aka the Main Event. These tickets, or wristbands (ala VLV) were 40 dollars each.

After enjoying a day at the antique mall and shopping at the Inglot counter at Macy's, Big Daddy and I got ready for the Hukilau. It was pouring rain and I was so afraid my hair was going to be ruined. Leave it to my trusty Bed Head Hard Head Hairspray to save the night! That whole week was pretty much a "wash out." The very first tropical storm of the year, Andrea, was brushing past and heading north over the area. Moreover, South Florida's rainy season was in full effect. According my Florida native husband, the rainy season takes place from May to September.

As we left Big Daddy's parents' house, the rain was crazy. The traffic on Interstate 95 was nuts too! Despite these inconveniences, we finally made it to the Yankee Clipper in Fort Lauderdale. I wish I got a picture of the hotel itself! It actually looks like a ship! We quickly checked in, got our wristbands, were given a sample of rum (yes, please!) and had a quick bite to eat in the Mexican restaurant, Dos Caminos.

After dinner, we made our way up to the Main Event area and saw a few bands, had some tiki drinks, and met some great people. I even had the surprise and pleasure bumping into and talking with Gabriella, a fellow vintage blogger! She was so nice and always so wonderfully dressed!! Here is her amazing blog:
After the Main Event bands were done, Big Daddy and I headed to the vendor area and browsed the booths. I bought a hot pink and white lace peignoir set and Big Daddy got real puffer fish lamp for our tiki bar at home! His light is similar to this:
As we finished our purchases and chatting with some great people, we saw the Disasternauts come into the room and they began to play. They are AWESOME! And their "monkey guys in NASA suits" antics were a riot!
Around midnight, Big Daddy and I decided to head back to his parents' house in Boca, which was only 15-20 minutes north of the Yankee Clipper. As we drove home towards Federal Highway, the storms over the ocean were producing amazing lightning! The bright, intense bolts lit up the thunderhead clouds hovering over the black ocean, creating a scene that was just incredible!

Overall, the night was a blast! I am so glad Big Daddy and I were able participate in the event! If you ever get a chance, you must do the Hukilau!

The next post will be Part 2, which features Saturday's event at the Mai Kai. I will post it soon!
Yesterday, I met my sister and niece for a day of shopping at Tyson's Corner Center, located in Tyson's Corner, Virginia. Tyson's is part of the Northern Virginia/DC Metro area.

During our fun day out, I went to MAC Cosmetics for a few basics and we browsed the stores and had a lovely lunch at La Sandia (a new, upscale take on classic Tex-Mex cuisine). We ordered table-side guacamole and dined on enchiladas, black beans, and tortilla soup.

After lunch, we made our way to the makeup counters in Bloomingdale's. I saw a few things that peaked my interest but I decided I didn't need anything. As we were leaving, I spotted something that caught my eye and lo and behold, there it was! Lipstick Queen!!!!

I have wanted to try Lipstick Queen lipsticks for a long time but no store carried them in the DC area. I have read countless online reviews that detail the quality, pigment, and color. One review said Lipstick Queen "Sinner" lipsticks are "not for the faint of heart" or the "shy." Well, you got my attention!

Nevertheless, you can imagine my joy and excitement when I saw the pretty colors just packed with pigment. According to the sales associate and Lipstick Queen packaging, these lipsticks boast 90% pigment and after trying on "Red Sinner," they were not foolin' around! These lipsticks mean business!

After swatching a few colors, I decided to buy "Red Sinner" and "Scarlet Red Sinner." (Lipsticks retail for 20.00 USD each).

Red Sinner is on the left and Scarlet Red Sinner is on the right. Red Sinner is a neutral bright red that leans slightly cool. The color is similar to Besame Cosmetics, "Besame Red" lipstick. The lipstick goes on opaque with one swipe. The texture is very smooth and rich. These are touted as matte but they have a little creaminess and feel very soft. Moreover, despite the matte description, they are not drying at all. Not one iota.

Here is me wearing Red Sinner:

The other color I purchased, Scarlet Red Sinner, is a berry red. It has a little bit of a claret undertone. The shade reminds me of a lighter, brighter version of Besame lipstick in "Cherry." MAC lip pencil in "Beet" pairs well. Beet is a touch darker than Scarlet Red Sinner.

Me wearing Scarlet Red Sinner:

Another thing I want to mention is how Lipstick Queen classifies their lipsticks. The full pigmented version is called "Sinner" and the more sheer, less pigmented formula is called "Saint." Many of the shades have a light and full-bodied version of each other.

So, how do these lipsticks compare with Julie Hewett? Besame? MAC? I think these lipsticks have more pigment than both Besame and Julie Hewett but only slightly more. The texture is heavier than Julie Hewett and Besame and as a result, the lipstick lasts much longer throughout the day and survives eating and drinking better.

However, when I compare Lipstick Queen to MAC, Lipstick Queen wins out hands down. I am usually a MAC girl but in the last few years, small companies like Julie Hewett, Besame, and Lipstick Queen are out-pacing MAC in spades. For example, I recently purchased RiRi Woo (a retro matte) from the "Rihanna loves MAC" Collection and as much as I love the color, the formula is so dry. It literally tugs at my lips when I apply it. In addition, the texture dries my lips out. I find that I can only wear MAC's Retro Matte lipsticks (ie Ruby Woo and RiRi Woo) for a few hours at a time (ie date night).

Overall, I am pleased as punch with my two Lipstick Queen purchases! If I didn't already have a huge cache of lipsticks on my vanity, I would go out right now and buy more shades. I cannot rave enough about them!
While I was there spending time with my in-laws and participating in the Hukilau, I also had the opportunity to visit two of my favorite antique malls, Sugar Chest and Hillsboro Antique Mall. Both malls are located in Pomano, Florida.

http://thesugarchestantiquemall.com/

http://www.hillsboroantiquemall.com/

Of the two malls, I have to admit that I prefer Sugar Chest. The layout is easier to walk and browse through and the bakelite selection is fantastic. Hillsboro has a cool vintage post card section (it's huge!), furniture, a great number of vintage housewares and kitchenware, and loads of costume jewelry. The only drawbacks are the small amounts of bakelite (and what you do find is so overpriced) and the layout is a bit chaotic. If there is such a thing, I feel like there is too much to see. I call it "sensory overload."

Nevertheless, I bought some post cards from Hawaii to frame for my tiki bar, three thin red bakelite spacers, a pumpkin-colored carved bakelite bangle, and a Hobnail dish for my mother-in-law.

During my trip to South Florida, I also visited Sugar Chest Antique Mall in Pomano, located on Federal Highway. This mall is about 15 minutes south of my mother-in-law's house. Every time I visit, I always make a stop at Sugar Chest! I call it my "bakelite haven."

On my recent visit, I bought three carved bakelite bangles. Each one was listed as 65 USD and there was a sale going on and as a result, my bangles were 40% off! I also scored a pristine opalescent, glittery lucite bag. I was floored when I spotted it glowing from within its display case! The seller originally wanted 400 USD but I felt that was way too high. Between my mother-in-law and the lovely attendant, Joey, who always helps us when we visit, I managed to get the bag for 200 USD.
One of the many charms of shopping in antique malls is finding hilarious items! You never know what you are going to find!

Let me show you what I discovered:

And as we were leaving, I saw this book. Pose! Werk that camera, honey!

At the end of my Florida visit, I had some great new bakelite scores, a pretty lucite bag, some fabulous vintage post cards, and I got a gift for my MIL. Overall, it was a fun time! I cannot wait to go back when I return to Florida in August!
How time flies when you are traveling, having fun, getting your tiki on, and just being alive! I hope all is well with everyone! It is June, summer is pretty much here, and oh gurl, we have a LOT to catch up on!

In my little absence, I visited family in South Florida, participated in the Hukilau in Fort Lauderdale, scored some great vintage finds, and spent Father's Day weekend with my lovely dad.

My husband (aka Big Daddy) left the DC area on the afternoon of 1st of June for Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Big Daddy was born and raised in South Florida and his parents live in Boca Raton. After an uneventful, yet calm flight, we arrived in Fort Lauderdale and upon claiming our luggage, my in-laws picked us up and all four of us went out for dinner at JB's on the Beach in Deerfield.

The next few days, we went out on my in-laws boat:

We toured the Intracoastal and swam in the open ocean. We also docked to eat lunch in Lighthouse Point and saw the historic "Cap's Place" as we cruised around:

During our stay, we ate out, cooked out on the grill at my in-law's house, had cocktails on the back patio in the evening, and simply took in all the wonders South Florida had to offer.

On a couple of mornings, my mother-in-law and I visited two antique malls, Hillsboro Antique Mall in Pomano and Sugar Chest Antique Mall on Federal Highway, just south of Boca Raton. At both locations, I scored bakelite bangles, vintage Hawaiian postcards, and I bought an amazing opalescent glitter lucite purse. (My next post will feature my goodies!)

But I have to share with you one of the 'hidden gems' you can find at Sugar Chest:

This is "Earring Magic Barbie." This doll came out in the 80s. It features a very "Jersey Shore-looking" Ken, complete with mesh shirt, gold chain, and vest. GTL, BABY! Um, no thanks. But, I know you want it! Just kidding! In my next post, I will show your more "treasures" I discovered.

One morning, my mother-in-law and I went to Boca Town Center to get makeup and to check out the sales at Macy's. My intent that day was to go to MAC Cosmetics for my goodies but as we went down the escalator to the first floor, I spotted this beacon of hope, light, and simply jaw-dropping makeup freak HEAVEN!

I wanted to die. I really did. Die from the sheer insanity and glory of all those pretty colors! I first found out about Inglot from my friends, Erin C. and Inky W. When I first saw a free-standing Inglot store, it was the Las Vegas location in the Caesars Forum Shops during VLV 15. I wanted to go in there so bad but I knew Big Daddy had been tortured enough. It was dinner time and I had already spent an hour in Sephora. Nevertheless, when I saw this counter in Macy's, there was NO way ANYONE was going to pull me away! Let me just say this: I. Wanted. EVERYTHING. In the end, I was "good." I only bought four shadows, a palette for the shadows, a brow pencil, two lipsticks, a loose copper pigment, and a glitter/loose shadow adhesive from Too Faced. I will post pictures/reviews of my haul soon! I promise!

By the end of the first week, it was Friday night and time to head to the Sheraton Yankee Clipper Hotel in Fort Lauderdale for the Main Event of the Hukilau 2013!
The weather was really bad for most of that week due to Tropical Storm Andrea brushing by and moving north over the Gulf of Mexico. The drive from Boca to Fort Lauderdale was terrible due to heavy rain. As a result, all the of the events for the Hukilau were moved inside. Despite this, Big Daddy and I were determined to have fun! We got drinks, had some dinner at the Mexican restaurant at the hotel, and made our way upstairs to see the bands and to enjoy the crowd. I met a few lovely people who knew other friends I had. You know, the whole "friends of friends" who know "this friend of that friend" thing.

Everyone was so kind and dressed so well! One gal I met from North Carolina had on this KILLER Whirling Turban dress that was to die for! She and her friend were dolls! So nice!! After the bands finished upstairs, we went downstairs to the vendor room to watch the Disasternauts play. I also did some shopping. I got a great hot pink and white lace nightie/robe set from the 50s/60s that was only 20 bucks and Big Daddy bought a real puffer fish light for our tiki bar at home!! I have photos I will share soon.

The next night of the Hukilau was the dinner at the Mai Kai. I will post on that event in its own post. It is quite a story (both good and not so good).

On the afternoon of Sunday, June the 9th, Big Daddy left to return home to DC for a business trip. I stayed in Florida until the evening of the 12th. During the remainder of my stay, the in-laws and I relaxed, visited other family members, and swam in the pool at my in-laws house. Let me just say, I did NOT want to come back home! Florida is just my cup of tea!
In September 2009, I was diagnosed with genetic hair loss/hair thinning and started using Women's 2% Rogaine. Even though my hair has always been fine, as I approached my 30s, I noticed my hair was losing volume. So, not only was my hair fine, it was now becoming thin! Oh fun!

Despite my knee-jerk reaction to simply give up and cut my hair off, I began researching hair extensions. I found out from my stylist that not only were they super expensive, they required costly maintenance, and in many cases they could make my hair loss worse. I quickly nixed that idea! Then one day while searching the Internet, I stumbled upon several online wig stores. I found everything from clip-in extensions, 3/4 wigs, headband wigs (a 1/2 wig with a headband attached), and even human hair clip-in extensions and volumizers. After some decision making, I bought a synthetic clip-on ponytail and headband wig. Let me tell you, those two hair pieces became my precious accessories! I wore them both to death! When the wigs started to show their age, I knew I had to find something better made!

In 2011, I finally made the investment to buy a human hair 14 inch, clip-in volumizer.

After I received the hair piece, I made an appointment for my stylist to color and cut it so it would match my color and blend into my own hair. I still have that volumizer and I wear it when I do a long, curled style.

However, lately I have not been wearing my volumizer as often. In the last six months, I have incorporated collagen supplements and a higher mcg Biotin pill into my daily vitamins. I continue to use my Rogaine for Women (the Target brand) faithfully. I am not sure who is the "culprit," but my hair is healthier and thicker!! I can wear my own hair in a fluffy ponytail or pigtail braids and not feel like I am bald!

This is my hair now and I am not wearing any hair piece:

I will never have thick hair but I my hair is definitely packing more volume!

Anyway, even though my hair is thicker, I still have a little trouble covering those mesh bun forms (found at Sally Beauty). I often need to tease my hair and use tons of hairspray to achieve full coverage. I do not like teasing my hair a lot. It can be very damaging, especially for hair like mine. I color it and it's thin. So, I need to find other ways to do vintage buns and up-dos that don't compound my hair's condition.

With that said, let me share with you my new little hair secret! HAIR PIECES!! Yes, hair pieces save the day again! Instead of clip-in volumizers or headbands, we are talking drawstring buns, wiglets, and toppers! I recently purchased three different synthetic hair pieces from a fabulous Etsy seller!

I got the Dusty piece:
I also purchased the Gina:

And lastly, I bought the Audrey:

How do I wear them? I simply put my hair into a ponytail and wrap the ends into a bun and secure with an elastic. I spray my hair with a strong hold hairspray to smooth out my "base" and using the two hair combs attached inside the piece, I slide one comb on top of the bun and the other underneath. No bobby pins are required! The piece is so secure and lightweight so I just put on a hair flower or bow and I am out the door!

Now, most of you may know that hair pieces are nothing new. They have been around for ages. In the 18th century, wigs were a must for any lady wanting to keep with with the latest fashion! Marie Antoinette anyone? In the 1960s, wiglets and full wigs were all the rage!

My mom and mother-in-law were both in their teens and 20s in the 60s. Both of them have told me how wiglets were pretty much standard for daytime looks and evening style. Just look at Christina Hendricks' "Mad Men" character, Joan. She wears tons of hair pieces throughout various seasons. During the season two episode, "The Mountain King," Joan is seen wearing a gorgeous purple dress and what looks like two hairpieces, one being the main up-do and the other a braid wrap/accent.

Even though I HATE the Greg character (especially during this episode), I just can't stop looking at Joan! Her style and hair, particularly during the first two seasons, are just perfection! I want that dress!!

Nevertheless, I am simply over the moon I found such fantastic hair pieces!I love wearing them and I really love the ease in which I can do vintage up-do styling!
So, you may be asking: what is the meaning of all this? Well, today the look at work called for a more "DC professional" esthetic. On a typical day, I can "get away" with wearing vintage, "office girl" attire paired with cat wing liner, dark, defined brows, and a bold red lip. However, due to various meetings with new clients and government officials, I am blending in with the DC masses!

This town is not know for being a hub of cutting-edge and/or unique fashion. Instead, it is the epicenter of government employees, Senate staffers, lawyers, lobbyists, military personnel, government contractors, and professionals. Therefore the look requires suiting textiles in charcoal, black, and navy paired with sensible shoes and an ID badge on a lanyard. While cities like Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, New York, and Portland are famous for their funky, hip 'come as you are' vibe, DC's "business and politics" atmosphere tends to leave us off the bullseye of cool.

http://www.travelandleisure.com/articles/americas-worst-dressed-people/15

Despite the horde of the dark-suit masses that dot the concrete, traffic-clogged landscape, there are little pockets of trendnistas in DuPont, Adams Morgan, and even in nearby Baltimore. Now, these 'hep kids' are the exception and not the rule. Most of the people here range from the yuppie soccer mom in Crocs and Gap khaki capris to the preppy guy on the Metro reading "Freakonomics," decked out in his crisp heather grey J. Crew suit and striped tie. If anyone (like me) has the gall to dress differently, then be prepared to endure the judging stares and stinging whispers.

Like the "Travel and Leisure" article stated, I suspect the reason for DC's lack of fashion is due to the nature of the workforce. This is the center of our nation's government. DC is also known for it's museums and monuments. We represent the nation, both politically and historically. Our local news makes national news. On more than one occasion, I have spotted Marine One (the President's Helicopter- and there's more than one) flying over the city. I love it how no one looks up in awe and wonder. Oh, we DC kids are so seasoned to the POTUS! Aren't we just too cool for school?!

So, today, in my modern professional attire, I feel I am playing "dress up!" I do not mind. It is just another day.
