Have We Become "Too Casual" In Modern Society?

This past weekend, I started reading my new (1955 edition) Emily Post Etiquette book I bought off Etsy.com (only $8.00 USD!), I visited Old Town Alexandria with my sister, niece, and nephew, and yesterday afternoon I watched the last two Season 3 episodes of Mad Men on AMC (they are re-showing two episodes from previous seasons on Sunday mornings).

On Saturday, I met with my sister and the kids (ages 17 and 15) and we spent the afternoon visiting the shops in Old Town before enjoying a fantastic meal at a quaint Italian restaurant. It was so fun hanging out with family while browsing the racks in a few consignment boutiques, including an overpriced vintage store that seemed to think 80s and 90s was 'vintage.' I did, however, find a beautiful 50s lucite and silvertone metal 'basketweave' bag on display in a window but it was scratched and filthy (yet they wanted $145.00 for it).

Before heading out to meet my sister, I shook off my lazy morning repose, put my makeup on, and dressed. I wore a 50s plaid wool pencil skirt, stockings, saddle shoes, a 50s black wool collared cardigan, pearls, and a lightweight, 50s era cashmere and alpaca blend, taupe-colored coat. Basically, I was wearing my usual Fall attire. Nothing 'fancy,' it was just another day like any other.

As the gang and I walked around town, I noticed quite a few people staring at me like I was a crazy woman. I get the odd look now and again (especially here in the DC area) but I am used to it. But, the number of stares seemed to be peculiarly high. Most of the 'gawkers' were clad in North Face jackets, jeans, baseball hats, and college hoodies.

I have nothing against hoodies or North Face. As an avid skier, I have several North Face items I love and rely on heavily during season. I even have a GMU hoodie and tee. I graduated from Mason twice (BA and MA). I often wear my hoodie and/or tee to the gym, when I am cleaning house, or when I am sick. I know 'style' is a personal choice. If someone wants to wear hoodies to a nice restaurant or a baseball hat to Sunday brunch, who am I to judge? And more importantly, how does one's clothing (especially a stranger) effect me? In addition, how does *my* choice to wear vintage effect others? The answer to those questions is, "it doesn't."

Not taking personal taste into consideration, I would like to know why we, as a society, have become so casual. When did a nice hat, suit, and tie morph into "business casual?"

The suit, tie, and hat have been replaced with untucked blouses, shapeless blazers, and tieless, unbuttoned shirts paired with pleated Dockers. Instead of day dresses and a sharp sweater (for the gents) on the weekend, we see hoodies and baseball hats.

This casual vein has permeated every locale from the workplace, weekend errands, sporting events, airline travel to cruising. When I was little, I actually remember dressing up whenever my family and I travelled on a plane. Even when we dined out, all of us dressed nicely. Nowadays, whether it's seat 11B on United Flight 916 non-stop to Denver or the corner table by the window in Ruth's Chris, people wear everything from Juicy Couture tracksuits to Old Navy tees.

On a recent flight to Fort Lauderdale, I saw a mother and teen daughter decked out in matching Victoria's Secret "Pink" tracksuits. What is funny is how the mom looked at me (wearing a 50s warm weather suit) like I was yesterday's garbage. Her face actually made a wide-eyed, scrunched nose look. Priceless.

Again, I am not judging anyone for their choice of wardrobe. I am trying to figure out how dressing super casual became the norm. Also, why do I get odd looks when I am dressed nicely and tastefully? Now, I am sure the main reason(s) people stare is simply because I wear vintage. I understand that seeing seamed stockings and saddle shoes on someone nowadays is not typical whatsoever! Despite the vintage element, I am still dressed well. I do not judge others' style. Sure, there is a part of me that wants to "call them out" on their audacity to stare at me like I am the weirdo when they look like they stumbled out bed. But, I refrain from doing so. It's not fair nor it is my place.

So, the questions are: why did "casual" become mainstream? And, is there such a thing as 'too casual?'

My Daily Makeup Essentials! (Pic Heavy)

I would like to share with you all my daily, essential beauty products/items. In the 20+ years I have been wearing makeup, I have experienced the good, the "meh," and the downright bad. Whether it was discovering Besame lipstick or finding out that Chanel foundations tend to be too yellow for my complexion, I have finally tailored my daily routine down to a select, 'tried-and-true' items.

For foundation, I cannot say enough about Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation ($59.00 USD)!

I know it's expensive but if you are going to splurge on anything beauty, it should be on a good-quality foundation! Foundation provides the backdrop, the canvas if you will, for your overall look. This formula is light and is buildable. The lightweight fluid simply melts into skin and imparts a natural finish with a soft, dewy glow. I was previously using Guerlain's Parure Gold but I realized it was a bit too golden (yellow-based) for my pale, cool skin.

For eyeshadow application, I refuse to put on shadow without a good primer. I have used Urban Decay and Too Faced. Both are wonderful. But, Nars Smudge-Proof Eyeshadow Base ($24.00 USD) outpaces them.

I love how this primer makes my shadow last for hours and hours without creasing but I hate the doe-foot applicator/packaging. It tends to waste product. I prefer a squeeze tube like Too Faced Shadow Insurance. When my tube seems to be running low, I shake it and I get more product. If Nars would make this primer in a tube form, I would be ecstatic.

Speaking of eyeshadow, nothing beats MAC eyeshadow!

You can buy individual shadows in a flip top pan for $15.00 USD or single palette pans (for inserting into palettes) for $11.50 USD.

When it comes to maintaining my brow shape, I get them tinted and waxed professionally at my local salon every 5-6 weeks. To keep my brows looking up-to-date between appointments, I use MAC's Penultimate Brow Marker ($17.50 USD).

It is like a sharpie for brows! This marker comes in one color, a medium-toned, neutral brown. The super-fine tip can draw fine, whispy lines to more intense lines for precise outlining and filling in. The color can also be layered without heavy build-up or creating a "Mommie Dearest" look.

To ensure my brows' shape during the day, nothing beats Maybelline Great Lash Mascara in Clear ($4.24 at my local Target)!

The lightweight, clear gel formula keeps brows in place without making them feel "tacked down" or coated. The gel quickly dries down to a feather-light feel while helping brows look perfectly groomed.

For lashes, I swear by MAC Opulash Mascara ($15.00 USD). It only comes in black. Until Cover Girl cruelly discontinued their coveted Marathon Mascara a few years back, I had been searching high and low for a good dupe. I tried everything from Revlon to Yves Saint Laurent and nothing came close to the long-lasting, waterproof magic that was Marathon. Even though Opulash is not waterproof, it holds up well all day without smudging, flaking, or causing raccoon eyes. However, if I get my lashes wet (e.g. laughing so hard I cry, crying at the end of "Strictly Ballroom," putting in contact solution, tearing due to allergies, and/or skiing without goggles), this formula will flake off. Now, it will not come off in a grey, watery mess, it simply "balls up" and crumbles off. Nevertheless, Opulash imparts black, lush lashes that look defined and classic.

For creating a 50s/60s cat wing eyeliner look, I adore Urban Decay's 24-7 Waterproof Liquid eyeliner in Perversion (a solid black) that retails for $18.00 USD.

This liner comes in a total of 11 different shades ranging from solid black to glittery silver to bright jewel green, pink, blue, and gold. The super fine brush expertly draws the thinnest lines as well as thick, bold strokes. I have worn this liner all day at work and even all night at VLV and it does NOT move. I sometimes notice *slight* fading at the inner corners of my upper lash line but nothing glaring or obvious. However, when I used Chanel Automatic liner or MAC Fluidline, I was left with raccoon eyes and upper lid transfer. Other than a little tiny tendency to fade in the inner corners after several hours of wear, Urban Decay Perversion is the best.

For concealing dark undereye circles, blemishes, scars, and discolourations, nothing is better than Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer.

Now, despite it's slightly hefty price tag of $30.00 USD (for .5 ounce), this concealer packs a serious punch! The formula is very concentrated and a little bit really goes a long way! For example, when I do my daily look, all I need is a little dot and a MAC 195 brush. That little amount totally covers everything from undereyes, rosacea, acne, to pimple scars! The formula touts itself as "waterproof" but I have not tested that claim yet. However, this concealer does not migrate, cake, slide off, or settle into lines.

For helping my lipstick stay in place all day, I rely on Trish McEvoy Flawless Lip primer ($26.00 USD).

This slant-tip primer goes on like an emollient balm and it dries down to a grippy, matte finish. To use, simply swipe on the primer and let it set for about a minute. If you immediately apply lipstick, the balm will make your lipstick whiteish and slidey! Not a good look! The trick is to wait for the formula to dry down and then apply lipstick! The primer will help lipstick last longer, prevent feathering, and assist in intensifying color.

For gorgeous vintage, pin up lips, nothing surpasses Besame Classic Color Lipstick ($22.00 USD)! My favorite shade is Besame Red!

Besame Red is cool, bright red that stays true all day! The semi-matte forumla feels creamy without being too emollient and is long-lasting without drying out lips. The color fades evenly and it will not turn pink (as some red formulas tend to do) The level of pigment is high and the result is totally opaque, intense color!

When it comes to lining lips and/or preparing them for red lipstick, Bobbi Brown Lip Pencil ($20.00 USD) is red is a must-have for red lipstick gals!

Bobbi Brown's "Red" is a true, neutral bright red that can be worn with many shades of red (e.g. Besame's "Besame Red," MAC "Russian Red," Julie Hewett's "Femme Noir," MAC Mattene in "Eden Rouge," Bobbi Brown's "Red" lipstick, Revlon's "Love That Red," and Julie Hewett's "Rouge Noir"). The pencil formula is creamy but the pigment stays in place without feathering or creeping. Moreover, the pencil ensures a crisp, precise line that is a must when doing a strong lip!

Now, the absolute "must-have" for any face is a good set of makeup brushes! Whether you prefer Ecotools, MAC, Japonesque, Smashbox, etc, brushes for face, eye, and lip are vital for proper application! I prefer MAC brushes.

When I was a teen, just starting out with makeup, I used the little sponge applicators that came with eyeshadow and I applied foundation with my fingers. I had no clue what I was doing and when I look back on high school photos, it shows! Nevertheless, I cannot see myself being able to do my face without a good set of brushes. Brushes, whether they are for smoothing on liquid foundation, applying shadow on lids, perfecting brows, polishing cheeks with blush, or setting your look with loose powder, can make all the difference between makeup and "wow factor" makeup!

To conclude, the one item I rely on to keep my makeup fresh all day is a set of oil blotting sheets. I like the ones from Clean and Clear ($4.49 USD for 50 sheets). I periodically use a sheet a couple of times throughout the day to absorb surface oil. If needed, I will then apply a light dusting of MAC Blot Powder Compact in Light ($23.00 USD) to keep shininess at bay.

For so long, I have pined for an Eames era lamp but the prices on Etsy and eBay tend to be quite high and the shipping alone (understandably) is steep. Nevertheless, when I saw this lovely priced at $85.00 USD, I knew I had to bring her home!

A Fist Full of Sundays

As of late, I seems like I am wavering between actively posting on this blog and periods of absolute stagnation. "Feast or famine, "all or nothing," "stationary and static."

Despite my chaotic absenteeism, I do have 'good reason' for my lapse in posting and leaving comments on others' blogs. My father has been going through some health issues and as a result, I have been spending a majority of my time travelling between my parents' house and mine. I am experiencing a sense of deja vu as I write this. (I have already stated this in previous posts).

I feel like my current mood is like Morrissey's song, "Every Day is Like Sunday." The images of closed stores, listlessly walking down a cold, empty boardwalk, and wishing to be somewhere, ANYWHERE, else harbors a sense of familiarity. The hours spent driving back and forth, the doctor visits, trips to the store, drives to the shops, and the endless barrage of unpacking, packing, and doing laundry make the days seem seamless. The days blend together like the packet of Splenda melting into my morning coffee.

In spite of my blasse state of mind, I would do all of this over and over again. My parents need me and my love for them erodes any desire to kvetch about my situation.

What makes these current state of affairs difficult is seeing my dad enduring all of this. Regardless of what is going on with my father, he is strong and he positive outlook is inspiring. As for my mother, she has been through a lot already this year. She lost a sister and a cousin over the summer.So, whenever she calls me, I am there, ready to hop in the car at any given notice.

I am not sure what to think and/or feel right now. I waffle between feeling super positive to feeling totally vexed. I have been so busy travelling, I have neglected the gym and my blog again. And writing and working out is probably what I need right now, big time. I need to conquer this "listless Sunday" feeling. It seems to be hovering over me like an old itchy, heavy wool blanket, ready to pounce.

I cannot allow myself to wallow in worry and indulge in empty stares out my living room window. I need to be the beacon of positive energy for myself and my parents. I need to trade in this "fist of Sundays" in for mornings at the gym and projects on my sewing machine. I find that when I am active and busy, I am happier. But whenever I feel this "meh" attitude, it tends to steer me away from what brings me focus and inner peace. Funny how that works, isn't it?

While I cannot promise that I will be "super blogger gal," I will try. (Heck knows I need it!) Nevertheless, I look forward to connecting with you all. I miss you, gals and your great blogs!

If You Can't Make It, Fake It! (Or faking it until it grows back!)

This is me, decked out in my kimono, about to start my entire skincare routine before bed. Moreover, this is how my hair looks in its natural state. You may not be able to notice but my hair is very fine and thin. I began to shed a lot of hair back in late July. Even though I have been using Women's Rogaine for two years, the stress I endured this summer took its toll on my already thin strands. In an effort to thwart any panic or further stress on myself, I began taking B-vitamins along with Biotin. I also went to see my dermatologist in late September who confirmed my hair loss was indeed stress-related and therefore, temporary!

So, until my hair grows back, I am going to continue my normal regime and wear a volumizing extension on a few days I wear my hair down. I love wearing my hair down but due to the shed, I feel my hair does not look its best and as a result, I have been wearing my hair in a ponytail or snood. However, with this lightweight hair piece, my hair confidence will be given a major boost!

The extension is made of human hair and comes on a 8-inch long weft with four small clips. The hair itself is 10 inches long.

Today my stylist Corry refreshed my red color and colored my new extension to match. He also trimmed it so it would better blend with my own hair and he also taught me how to properly place it in my hair.

And here is my cat, Misty Blue, yelling at me to brush her hair. She does this every night. She knows that when I am the bathroom at night (and in the morning), I do my grooming and she expects me to groom her as well. My cat actually recognizes my brush and understands the action of brushing. Even if i simply I pick up my brush, Misty Blue will come running in the bathroom and demand I brush her (LOUDLY). I am telling you, this cat thinks she is a woman. A showgirl, diva, princess, queen bee, 'star of the show' woman!

Nevertheless, I am going to tough out this re-growing process. I am not going to let it get to me any more because stress makes hair fall out! I also realize that at the end of the day, hair is hair. I count my blessings that all I have to worry about is thin hair!

But, I do acknowledge fully that I let that element of vanity get to me. When I see women with thick tresses, I do feel a pang of envy and wonder but in the end, I know I am going to be fine. I can already see new hair growing back. Up close, the new growth looks like tiny, pale blond sprouts. (New hair tends to come in pale and then develops its pigment as it grows out in most individuals).

Until my hair is filled in, I am going to rock out the fake (albeit human) hair. Like Corry once told me, "If you can't make it, fake it!"

I WANT This! Self-Adhesive Wallpaper with a Vintage Look!

Today while getting my red hair color refreshed and getting a hair extension colored to match (more on that in my next post), I was flipping through the latest issue of Lucky Magazine and came upon a feature that listed self-adhesive wallpaper. The company is called "Tempaper" and they make self-sticking wallpaper that can be easily installed and removed without destroying your walls! Not only is this idea peachykeen, I love this "Alto" paper! It looks very mid-century. Uh, can we say, YES PLEASE?!

The average price per roll is about $60.00 to $74.00 USD. I know that is a bit pricey but to me it's worth it because I do not have to buy adhesive, tools, or deal with the mess. I have wallpapered before and it's a pain in the posterior! Moreover, the look of that Alto paper is gorg-e-ous! The paper also comes in a black and white print that is currently on sale! Want, want, want!

Besame Lipstick Review: Classic Color Collection In Cherry Red

After updating my makeup kit last week, I realized that I was lacking a deep, cherry-toned red lipstick. Sure, I have several red lipsticks ranging from bright pink-toned shades, vibrant tomato-infused hues to neutral tones. But I needed a rich, sultry cherry shade to make my collection complete! Besides, a darker red is just perfect for fall!

In the last couple of years, I have come to the conclusion that most, mainstream makeup brands (e.g. MAC, Revlon, Make Up For Ever, Chanel, Nars, etc) fall a bit short (some more than others) when it comes to retro red lipstick colors. Moreover, their textures tend to be too dry or too emollient, they fade quickly when worn, tend to bleed, and/or the pigmentation is not quite "right."

Now, please do not get me wrong, I ADORE MAC's "Russian Red" and Make Up For Ever's Rouge Artist Intense Lipstick in Satin #42 but I prefer a semi-matte finish paired with bright, intense pigment. With that said, I have discovered 'vintage red lipstick heaven' with Julie Hewett and Besame Cosmetics' lipsticks. Not only are their colors AMAZING, their comfortable semi-matte texture is unbeatable when it comes to comfort and longevity! Even their vintage-inspired gold lipstick packaging is to die for!

I have been contemplating buying Besame's Classic Color Lipstick in Cherry Red ($22.00 USD) for a while and last week, I finally did! My package arrived yesterday and I have been wearing my new lippie ever since! Cherry Red is the forth Besame Classic Color Lipstick I now own. I have Besame Red, Red Velvet, and Carmine.

Cherry Red is a deep, rich red with a deep cherry base. The color is really like a fresh plucked cherry. Now, the first photo shows the lipstick in bullet form. I think my flash brightened the color because the actual color in person looks very similar to MAC's Dubonnet (a deep wine red). However, once the lipstick is applied, the color seems to come alive and looks lit from within! Here is a swatch on the back of my right hand:

I cannot say enough how much I love Besame lipstick! It is my favorite, hands-down! It lasts a long time on my lips (accept for drinking and eating) and the color fades evenly.

A Tale of the Neglectful Blogger

Again, I find myself being a 'lazy blogger.' I have been busy with work and some family things but for the most part, my absence from the blogging world is mainly due to not making time for writing. Writing is very therapeutic for me and when I am tense, I should turn to writing and not compound my stress by turning away from it.

With that said, I want to apologize for not commenting and posting on your blogs. I truly enjoy reading, learning, and interacting with all of you. Your blogs are wonderful sources of information and fun! In the past year and a half, I have met so many wonderful, like-minded vintage gals who have taught me everything from makeup application, hair styling, clothing, interior design, sewing, knitting, music, and so on. I also love reading about your sewing projects, the events you go to, the bands you see, and the people you meet. Overall, your blogs make me feel that I am not alone when it comes to my vintage obsessions!

So, when it comes to certain things that bring us joy, why do we often turn away and/or neglect those elements in times when we need them the most? As some of you may know, this summer was hellacious for me. I lost two aunts, my father has had some health issues, my mother is in mourning, and as a result from all the stress, I started to lose my hair (thankfully it was temporary).

For almost four months, I did not set one foot in the gym. I occasionally ran on my treadmill at home but I didn't feel a sense of accomplishment and one-ness with myself when I was done. It was like I was in a constant state of 'meh.' Like writing, working out is very cleansing and rewarding for me. I love that sensation of strength working out gives me and yet, there I was avoiding it like a disease.

A month ago, I decided 'enough was enough' and I literally dragged my lazy butt to the gym. As I struggled with weights that were previously easier to manage, I felt a rush of "ahhhhhh" and I realized *this* was what I was missing. I needed to get away from the stress by tackling the malaise that seemed to permeate my skin like stale cigar smoke. By the end of my routine, I was tired but it was a 'good tired.'

So, here I am writing, and I love it. I know that despite my knee-jerk reaction to go inward in times of stress, I have to rebel against my blasé self and do the things that may seem like an effort but in the end, bring me incredible joy. In a sense, I am telling myself, "I am doing this for your own good!"

New Season, New Hair Color

Now that fall is in full-swing here in the DC area, it is time for changing my hair color. For most of spring and summer, my hair was red paired a bold platinum blond chunk. Part of me misses my blond but I love going 'all red' for fall and winter.

My stylist, Corry Kendall, colored my hair in a more golden, orange-based red. Last year in November (Election Day actually), I opted for a cooler, cherry-toned red. Having experienced several types of red shades, I prefer a more gold red. I think it looks better set against my pink-toned skin. In my opinion, the pinkier, cooler reds bring out too much pink in my complexion.

Despite thin state of my hair (due to stress), I am happy with my hair! Moreover, if I miss my blond, I can always bring it back next year! But for now, I will enjoy this 'red state of mind.'

On the morning of the 22nd of September, 2011, I got into my car to go to the gym before heading off to work and I noticed the interior was disheveled. One of my back seats was flipped down, revealing the trunk and the center console compartment was ransacked. Sometime during the wee hours of the night, a thief and/or thieves made off with my road-side emergency kit and get this, my window break hammer.

This is not the first time my car has been a victim of theft. In June 2010, my car's back window was smashed and my work laptop was stolen.

The fact this happened again makes me very mad. But unlike the first incident, I had a camera recording the whole thing. In the aftermath of having my car window destroyed, property taken, and having to wait two months to have my window replaced, my husband decided to take action by installing cameras in various locations on our home.

After realizing my car was indeed robbed, I went back inside my house and notified my husband. Then for an hour, he and I both scanned hours of overnight footage until we finally found the frames showing a young male (probably high school age) pulling up to the curb in a light-colored car with an unseen accomplice at 1:16 a.m. The kid i.e. "ASSHAT" is seen attempting to access to my husband's car (with no success) and then observed gaining entry to mine. (Like a total idiot, I left my car unlocked). This brat rummaged in my car for a few minutes before making off with my auto kit and car hammer. I mean, really, kid? You just *had* to steal a 10 dollar car hammer? You are either really stupid or just a loser so desperate to prove to your friends how "gangster" you are. Piece of shit.

Sorry about the language but I admit it. I am mad. What gets me is how stupid someone would have to be to risk getting caught, possibly getting charges pressed, and going before a judge over something as trivial as 10 bucks. Moreover, how can anyone (young or not) think it's okay and/or 'cool' to steal from people? Have they no conscience? When I was 5, I stole a piece of 5 cent "Bazooka Joe" bubble gum from the local 7-11. My dad heard me fiddling with the wrapper in the backseat of our 70s station wagon and he promptly drove me back to the store to pay the clerk and say I was sorry. I was bawling, shaking, and scared! I thought for sure I was going to jail! Even though it was just a bit of gum, I remember the guilt and shame I felt. With that said, how can people steal 'real things' can sleep peacefully at night?

Despite my surly mood and wanting to punch that kid, I took a deep breath and called the non-emergency number for the police. Within 20 minutes, an officer arrived. He took my statement, dusted and printed my car, and my husband made him a CD of the camera footage detailing the theft. Before the officer left, he asked if I wanted to press charges if the kid was caught, I said "Heck yes!" Even though the items that were taken do not add up to much, I want to make a point that actions have consequences.

In spite of my previous chagrin, I am okay now. No one was hurt, my car was not damaged, and nothing of major value was taken. I have done all I can with the police so the only thing now is to let it go and to be more diligent when it comes to locking my car!

A Little Bit of "Mad Men" in My House

When "Mad Men" first debuted on AMC in 2007, I didn't watch it. There was a part of me that felt the depiction of the early 60s was "too modern." Moreover, the notion of following the tales of a married, cocksure ad man with a scotch and girl addiction was depressing. However, after my TiVo recorded a few episodes in my "TiVo Suggestions" file, I found myself not only watching them, I was entranced! The interior design, the clothing, and the complex nature of the characters made me love this show! In a sense, I became a "Mad Men" junkie!

Speaking of interior design, I was recently watching a "Season 2" episode of "Mad Men" and I saw this:

This is a screen-shot of Pete and Trudy Campbell's Manhattan apartment. I ADORE the art on the wall! The three canvases look like a bas-relief or woodcuts.

Inspired by these pieces (along with the artwork by Ms. Moe), I decided to create my own depiction using three separate 12x24" canvases coated with acrylic paint.

Before I began my paint/color scheme, I made two stencils with sketch paper and scotch tape. Stencils are a good way to ensure uniformity and accuracy:

Then, I painted the canvases with pale pink and a faux fishnet design using a darker, mid-tone pink. When the paint was dry, I traced the outline of the stencil(s) onto each canvas with lead pencil. I outlined the shapes with a Sharpie Paint Pen in Black and filled them out with black gloss acrylic paint. To finish, I accented the three shapes with white acrylic.

A Tiki Room to Call My Own! (Picture Heavy)

Back in April, my husband surprised me with a bamboo tiki bar for my 36th birthday! I was surprised and very happy! He found the bar online at Target! Target?! Who knew they had such cool items like a real bamboo, thatched roof tiki bar complete with a set of shelves in the back?

The bar is in my sunroom. A room that, until the tiki bar, was a sitting room that did not get much use. Sure, I had some wicker furniture in there but the sunroom was really just a place for my plants and the cat to get sun. (My cat loves to spend her days lounging in the sun beams, working on her fur tan.)

Now that the sunroom has been given a proper purpose, I have been slowly collecting tropical kitsch, lights, vintage prints, and I also have made a few paintings and signs. Many of the paintings are based on real 40s/50s tiki-themed bars and nightclubs. I have even got a set of ceramic tiki mugs from my cousin along with a real puu puu platter (complete with sterno flame) from the husband.

So without further ado, let me show you around!

The tiki bar has pineapple lights I bought in Florida for $6.00 USD!

Martini lights from Party City!

A poster board tiki I made using tape and a hot glue gun! I painted the inside with red, yellow, and orange flames and the outside is done with shades of brown. I placed a fake, battery-operated candle votive inside.

A ceramic hibiscus dish and a pretty fern-like stained glass and metal table bought in Florida.

Our persian cat, Misty Blue, is already a bar regular! She loves Mai Tais and is currently brushing up on her hula dancing.

Here is our puu puu platter from this past Saturday night! It is made of wood, has a lazy susan spinning feature, and has a little sterno grill top in the center. Gotta love Trader Joe's frozen appetizers!

Lastly, and most importantly, here is the "Tiki Bar Rules" sign I painted. Of course the rules are totally tongue-in-cheek!! The reasons for rule #2 and #3 were based on an incident in which my cousin got mad at me because I mentioned that "I did not care for Dave Matthews Band." Well, he asked! He called me a "Rockabilly snob!" Brat! Nevertheless, being family, we got over it, laughed, and hugged. But, I had to put the rules up there just to rib him!

I still want to add a few more kitsch here and there before I can call the room "done." So, what do you gals think?

The Power of Spray Paint, An Eager Glue Gun, and Plastic Rhinestones!

While browsing the aisles in my local Target a couple of months ago, I found this black metal starburst mirror for $24.99 USD:

Not only was I was pleasantly surprised that Target would have an item like this in their stores, the price was great! I immediately put the mirror in my cart amongst my Dryel, Duncan Hines Brownie mix, and Purina cat food and I made my way to the register. As soon as I returned home, I armed myself with a hammer and a nail and mounted my new purchase proudly on my foyer wall.

This past weekend, I noticed a void on my west-facing den wall. I had an empty space between two atomic paintings I made this past winter and I realized either a sculpture or a starburst mirror and/or clock would fit perfectly.

I thought about buying a mid-century starburst clock on Etsy but I decided against it due to the high shipping costs and on because most sellers want a pretty penny!

I then pondered the idea of buying another starburst mirror from Target but I did not want an exact duplicate. Then it 'hit me:' I could create a 'new' mirror with spray paint and some flat-back rhinestones.

I went to Target and bought the same mirror. Then went to my local Michaels Craft store and purchased a can of Krylon metallic gold spray paint for $7.49 USD and a set of assorted colored/shaped flat-back plastic rhinestones for $4.99 USD.

Later that evening, I laid down a few layers of newspaper on my back porch. Then, I covered the mirror surface with painter's tape. I sprayed a two coats (I allowed each coat to dry completely) of the gold paint on both sides of the mirror. Using my hot glue gun, I adhered blue square, round silver, and triangle silver gemstones to the mirror. I let the glue cool, removed the paint tape, and hung the mirror on the wall:

It is amazing what a little spray paint and glue can do! I like the way the mirror turned out! I can so see myself doing this again in another room. It is fun and so easy to do! The possibilities are endless!

Like Edith Bouvier Beale (aka Little Edie) of Grey Gardens, lately I have been covering my head in scarves (or in my case, mostly snoods). For over a month, my hair has been falling out again. In late 2008/early 2009, I began losing hair at an alarming rate. Due to heredity, I have been 'blessed' with female hair loss i.e. androgenic alopecia. My grandmother, mother, and aunties have thin hair that gets seems to get worse with age.

I stopped taking the Pill in July of 2009 (I was on it for 15 years) and by early September of that year, my already-thinning hair began to shed. Plagued with worry, I went to my dermatologist who informed me that not only was I experiencing a hair shed due to hormonal changes but this loss was compounded with the fact I was in the early stages of heredity hair loss. Great.

Nevertheless, my doctor recommended Rogaine for Women (2% Monoxodil solution). I began this treatment right away and for nearly two years, I had AMAZING results.

Despite the fact I use my Rogaine twice a day without fail, I started to lose hair again in late July. To say the least, I am devastated. I am at a loss why this is happening.

From what I have found via online searches, my recent hair loss could be stress-related or due to a synchronized hair shed (since my hair was put into an overall growing phase due to starting Rogaine two years ago). Moreover, some women experience seasonal hair sheds in the summer and/or early Fall.

I hope that my hair is just going through a synchronized hair shed phase (meaning temporary) and not because my Rogaine stopped working. If I am going bald despite my stringent Rogaine regime, I think I would just lose it.

So, I have to ask: do any of you experience seasonal or occasional hair shedding? Is this normal? And if so, how long does it last?

A Vintage Girl's Must-Have: Freddies of Pinewood Dungaree Dolls Review

First and foremost, I want to apologise for my lack of posts as of late! I have been well busy with family issues and work! This summer has been non-stop! I feel very disconnected and 'out of sorts,' but never fear, I am back, gals! Be damned earthquake, Hurricane Irene, work, and cheeky home decor, I am "back with a vengeance!"

Nevertheless, I would like to share my review of the Freddies of Pinewood Dungaree Dolls overalls! I purchased these directly from their website on 22 July 2011 and on the afternoon of the 29th of July, they arrived in my mailbox and ever since, I have have fallen under their spell! On the weekends, I find myself reaching for these overalls along with my Freddies' "Classic Indigo" jeans. Not only are the jeans and overalls comfortable, their design epitomises proper vintage detailing and style! Moreover, the quality is top notch!

The Dungaree Doll Overalls cost 50 pounds UK or $80.50 USD. Despite the higher price, these overalls are SO worth it! The denim is a heavier weight and the colour is a true dark rinse. The waist is fitted and the pant legs are wide. In addition, the inseam is long enough (at least for my 5ft., 3 in height) to roll up (cuff) twice. Now, most overalls are too baggy and as a result, are not flattering on a feminine shape. I had a pair of Gap overalls in the early 90s (when I was at university) and I recall looking very shapeless! However, the Dungaree Doll overalls are tapered in the waist and the bib is adjustable (the two shoulder straps both have two button tabs for a proper fit).

If you are unsure of your size, please refer to the size chart listed. The chart is VERY accurate and if you select your size based on the specific measurements listed, you will NOT be disappointed! I am a 27.5 waist, a 36 bust, and 37.5 hip and the 28 size fits me PERFECTLY! The fitting is so perfect it felts like these overalls were individually tailored for me! Many size charts tend to be an estimate (either too big or too small) of size whilst the Freddies of Pinewood chart is spot-on!

When you order a pair of Freddies, you will need to wash them before wearing. The darker rinse needs special care. Turn the denim inside out and wash in cold water. Tumble dry low and iron as necessary. If you have any light-coloured furniture or clothing, be mindful as the denim may stain. I have not experienced this with my two Freddies items but I have stained my hands (putting them in the front pockets) with a pair of dark-rinse J. Crew capri denim jeans.

So, if you are looking for an authentic 40s/50s denim style, give Freddies of Pinewood a try! Not only does their product line feature an authentic vintage look, their quality and customer service are amazing!

Eartthquake in DC

Earlier this afternoon I was working from home and all of a sudden, my tiki bar started to shake. My stem ware was tinking and I thought it was due to a low-flying plane. (I live near Dulles airport).

Within a few seconds, the shaking became more pronounced. My tiki bar became a clamorous mass of clanking dishes and glass. For a few seconds, the shaking was intense. I realized what was going on. This was no plane buzz. It was an earthquake. I ran under a door frame and grabbed on to each side. My husband, who was also working from home, ran up from his office in the basement and told me to go outside. For some reason, I started to cry. I felt weird. Emotional. And no pun intended: shaken up.

As soon as the husband and I got outside, the quake was over. Apparently, it was a 5.9 on the Richter scale. In all of my years living in Virginia, I never thought I would ever experience an earthquake.

After the earthquake stopped, my husband waited a while and then proceeded to check our house for damage. Other than the crack in the east-facing wall of our tiki room (seen above. Sorry for the blur), everything is fine.

I know this crack is new, and therefore caused by the earthquake. I have been decorating the tiki room recently and I know this crack was not there on Sunday when I hung up new prints. I hope this line on the wall is cosmetic and not a structural issue.

Nevertheless, I hope all are well. I am a bit weirded out but I am ok. It is moments like this that make me realize how little control we have in life. I somehow feel more aware of what's important and what is bupkis at the end of the day!

My "Mad Men" Hair Experiment

Last Friday morning, I decided to try a new, never-tried up-do ala "Mad Men." I was inspired by Christina Hendricks' "Joan" look. I wore an early 60s nylon dress, a pair of late 50s black patent heels, and my white and yellow bead, three strand necklace that I bought last summer for 10 bucks.

After some trial and error with sectioning and bobby pin placement, I managed to do a somewhat decent style. I used a lot of Sebastian Hairspray and the hair stayed in place all day.

I would do this style again, especially for special occasions and nights out. I cannot see myself doing it for workdays since I am often rushed in the morning. I need to practice! I would love to know how office gals got ready everyday!

The Tale of "Where I've Been and the Well-Traveled Road"

This is my cat sleeping on my stairs on a recent hot, sunny afternoon. The "pooped out" look on her face how I feel as of late. Oh, what I would do for a vacation, let alone a day off. Heck, I will even take an afternoon!

While my cat's sluggish repose is due to her 'tedious' schedule filled with appointments with her toys, meetings with the sunbeams, and lunch dates with her food and treats, my exhausted state is due to work, family, and more work. I have not been on a proper vacation for almost two years. In addition, I have not been to the gym since late May. Yes, you read correctly: May. And it's driving me BATTY!! I need to workout but finding the time has nearly been impossible.

Along with my professional responsibilities, I have been driving back and forth to my parent's house (about an hour and a half away) almost every week since early June. My dad has had several doctor visits and due to my aunt's passing in June, my mother has needed my help. Moreover, another aunt passed away nearly two weeks ago. She was in her 70s and was suffering from dementia. Combined with the worry about my dad, my mother has had a rough go of things. I know if anyone needs a break, it's her.

Despite the fever pitch of happenings in my life, I am ok. I just worry about my dad and my mom. They are getting older and I find myself anxious and deeply concerned about with the typical issues that accompany it.

However, my parents are leaving for Europe to visit family in a few days and I know my mom will love the break and being able to visit with her sisters and brother. Moreover, my dad will enjoy playing golf with his nephews and having a round at the pub with my uncles.

As for me, I just want to get back into a workout routine, better sleep, and maybe take a mini-holiday somewhere. I also want to get back into blogging and connect with you all again.

Summer Makeup Must-Haves!

Now that summer is here, I though I would share with you all some great products that will help ensure your makeup's staying power and also help protect your skin from the sun!

In the heat of summer, our makeup can fall victim to heat, perspiration, humidity, and the sun. Oil production increases, foundation slides off, blush fades away, and days spent outside can cause sunburn that can lead to sun damage, premature aging, and even skin cancer.

So, what is a summertime gal to do? She can update her beauty kit with products that will safeguard her look and skin!

One of the most important items a gal should have in her summertime kit is a moisturizer, foundation primer, or foundation that contains SPF. If I am going to be outside for long stretches of time, I rely on RoC Complete Lift Daily Moisturizer in Spf 30 (retails for about $20-25+ USD). I also wear it when I go skiing in Colorado. It provides complete sunblock protection and it goes well under mineral foundation and powder foundation. For some reason, this moisturizer does not pair well with liquid foundation. I am not sure why but it tends to "ball up."

When shopping for a foundation that has sun protection, anything with a SPF of 15+ is ideal. The same goes for a daily moisturizer or foundation primer. If you are unsure about what SPF to purchase, please visit the Skin Cancer Foundation site:

If you want a foundation and moisturizer with SPF together, then I cannot recommend Laura Mercier's Tinted Moisturizer (1.7 ounce for $42.00 USD) in SPF 20 enough! There are three different formulas in this range: the original, oil-free, and Illuminating (has a pearly highlight effect). I prefer the Oil-Free because my skin is very oily! The shade that I use is the lightest, Porcelain.

This foundation provides sheer to light coverage. It is perfect on lazy weekend days or when you want a no-fuss look. On the days I am doing yardwork or hanging out by my in-laws' pool, I simply wash my face, put on a pea-size amount of foundation, set with loose powder, apply red lipstick, put on a hair scarf and sunglasses, and I am done.

In the last year, I have started using foundation primer occasionally for special events like nights out and Viva Las Vegas. I first used MAC's Prep and Prime SPF 50 Primer but it contains a lot of silicone which broke me out badly. I was very disappointed because it really made my foundation look better and last so much longer. However, before I went to my first Viva back in April, Erin from Every Branch Blog recommended Korres 99% Oil-Free (basically means little to no silicones) Natural Foundation Primer for $28.00 USD (available at Sephora stores and Sephora online). This primer is very light and it helps provide a smooth base that makes foundation look more even and last longer. When I was at Viva, this primer did wonders in helping my makeup survive nighttime dancing and cocktails, the pool party, and the car show.

Another important item for summertime makeup is blot powder. I use MAC's Blot Powder in Light ($23.00 USD). This powder is not heavy and it does not coat the face in heaviness. It is very light and very finely milled. It simply blots oil and mattifies skin.

Speaking of blotting oil, I cannot tell you how grateful I am to have discovered oil-absorbing sheets! I use the Target "Up and Up" brand and I cannot remember how much they cost but I suspect they are around 3 bucks. The sheets by Clean and Clear (50 count) are $4.49 USD.

These sheets are also available at MAC but the Target and Clean and Clear brands are identical to MAC's and they are cheaper! Throughout the day (e.g. every couple of hours), I will use one sheet to blot excess oil and then I will re-apply my MAC Blot Powder. This method will help prevent powder build up and a cakey look that can sometimes result from layering powder on top of oil over and over.

When I was in high school and college, I worked at an amusement park. I spent most of my days working outside in the Virginia heat and humidity. I would often pull out my Cover Girl Clean and Natural compact to blot my face and by the end of the day, I looked like a coated, pale pancake from hell! When I started using blot sheets about 8-10 years ago, I soon discovered that not only did my makeup look better at the end of the day, I had less breakouts as well.

In conclusion, summertime makeup essentials should include a good SPF, an oil-free/light coverage foundation or tinted moisturizer, an oil-free foundation primer, an oil-blotting powder, and an oil-absorbing sheets. With these must-haves in your kit, you are sure to look picture-perfect all summer long!

Today's Makeup and New Shoes (cheap!)

Hey all! I hope everyone is well on this Wednesday! It has been so hot here in the DC area! This afternoon while I was at work, we had a major thunderstorm go through. The lightning was glorious! Ask anyone and they will tell you that I *love* thunderstorms! There is just something so powerful and beautiful when Nature puts on a good 'light show!'

The pic above shows me this morning before I left for work. As I was taking the picture on my Blackberry, the cat was yelling at me (very loudly), demanding my full attention. She gets extra needy whenever her 'daddy' is away on business. Let me tell you, getting her to go bed last night was practically impossible! Brat!

Nevertheless, I would like to share with you today's makeup!

MAC Paint Pot in Rollickin' (a pearly, seafoam, green-blue cream shadow base) was applied to the lower lids.

MAC Aquadisiac eyeshadow (a shimmery teal) was applied on top of Rollickin' Paint Pot.

MAC Surreal Shadow (a shimmery green-based light blue) was blended onto the crease.

MAC Crystal Avalanche (a bright white pearl) was applied to the browbone.

MAC Liquidlast Liner in Point Black was applied in a cat-wing shape using a MAC 208 brush.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on Eyepencil in Electric was applied to the lower lash line and then was set with MAC eyeshadow in Aquadisiac (using MAC 212 brush).

Maybelline Volum'Express One by One Mascara in Black (Waterproof) was applied to top and bottom lashes.

MAC Eyepencil in Fascinating (a stark white) was applied to my waterline.

On my face, I am wearing Guerlain's Parure Gold Foundation in Beige Claire 01, MAC blush in Pink Swoon, and Murad's Acne Treatment Concealer in Light (to cover a few breakouts). I set my face makeup with Coty Airspun Loose Powder in Translucent and finished the look with Make Up For Ever's Rouge Artist Intense lipstick in #45 and MAC Lipliner in Cherry.

Today, I am also wearing a new pair of Miss Me? black velvet-esque fabric (almost a faux suede-like material) platform shoes. I bought these on Endless.com (a division of Amazon) for $40.00USD! They also come in purple!

That 'thing' on the far right is my cat's plush catnip mouse toy. She wanted me to play fetch.

These shoes are very comfortable but they do run a 1/2 size+ too large. I am normally a 7 but I ordered the 6.5 (based on the online reviews stating the shoes run big) and they are still a little too roomy for me. I put a pair of Foot Petal inserts in the ball of each shoe and I can feel my heel sliding forward a tiny bit. I can make the shoe tighter by buckling the last hole in the ankle strap. I can also buy some heel inserts or the Foot Petal Killer Kushionz:

Moreover, one curious and potentially comical (and dangerous for the clumsy like myself) feature of this shoe is that it has velvet soles.

When I tried them on in my bedroom, I walked for a second and I felt like I was traversing on a "Slip n' Slide!" I pictured myself 'sliding' to my death on my carpeted stairs! Imagine the husband, coming home and finding me at the end of the staircase having been eaten by the cat. At least I died in style..... (JK!)

Interestingly enough, when I walk on concrete surfaces or asphalt, these shoes have great traction. They are a bit tricky on carpet and wood flooring. I suspect the velvet soles will get rougher and therefore easier to control after a few wears.

Overall, I know I will be wearing these shoes a lot! They have a great 40s style that will pair well with many things like dresses, skirts, and even wide leg, high-waist trousers.

Review of Guerlain Parure Gold Foundation in Beige Clair-Have I Lost My Mind!?

I would like to share with you all my latest cosmetic indulgence: Guerlain's Parure Gold Foundation in Beige Clair ($78.00 USD). I have either lost my mind or I have made a sound investment for my skin. I am not sure which!

Let me tell you, I have never in my life spent this much for a beauty product! The most I have spent is around $45.00. Normally, I will buy MAC Prolongwear Foundation for $29.50 USD (before my 30% MAC Pro discount).

When I read the review for Guerlain's Parure Gold on www.temptalia.com late last year, I felt compelled to try it but the steep pricetag was holding me back. However, having recently found myself disappointed with my current foundation, I decided to cave and go for the "Gold."

So, what in 'Sam Hill' makes a $78.00 foundation worthy of its lofty cost? Well, according to the information detailed on Neiman Marcus' website, Guerlain Parure Gold is described as follows:

"A Rejuvenating Golden Light Foundation contains an exclusive double-sided Gold Radiance Pigment: the opaque side targets imperfections and dull zones, while the golden side reflects light.

Combined with the regenerating properties of Myrrh Oil and the lifting and smoothing properties of Peptides, long-term results include the diminishment of fine lines and smoother, softer skin.

The luxurious golden flecks leave the complexion with an aura of vitality and beauty. Dull skin zones are illuminated, while wrinkles and under-eye circles are subdued.

We all know that companies and stores can proclaim their products to be miracle-making elixirs but at the end of the day, it's about real results. Now, Guerlain may never be the 'make-all-my-skin woes-fade away' magic potion but it certainly does something for my skin!

Before I begin with my review, let's start with the glamorous packaging:

The bottle is a heavy, solid black glass container adorned with gold writing. The top of the bottle cap boasts the traditional Guerlain logo. The bottle just looks luxurious on my vanity! I feel like a vintage movie star every time I see it!

In addition, the pump bottle has a 'see through' window on the side so you can see how much product is actually inside:

The Parure Gold comes in six shades, the lightest being the one I bought, Beige Clair 02. I heard there was a lighter shade, 01, but I read somewhere that it is not available in the United States.

In regards to shade reference (for those of you familiar with MAC), I am a NW15. I have very sensitive, very pale skin (and very oily) with a pink undertone but I also have a touch of yellow in my complexion.

When I received my package from Neiman last Friday afternoon, I excitedly opened the box and pulled out my brand-new, posh foundation. I immediately pumped a small dot of liquid on the back of my hand and to my surprise and almost-letdown, the foundation looked too gold/yellow:

At first glance, I thought I needed to put the foundation bottle back in its box and ship it back. But something told me to try it on my face. I felt like I had to give it a proper chance to make it work since I spent so much on it!!

I went into my bathroom, and removed the foundation I was wearing (MAC Prolongwear) on the right side of my face. I again pumped out a tiny amount of foundation and applied it. I stood back from the mirror and thought, "It *looks* okay but I can see a difference in tone." Instead of 'throwing in the towel,' I decided to wait until the next day so I could apply the foundation to my entire face.

The next morning, I washed my face, put on my skincare, brushed my teeth, and put on my usual makeup along with the new foundation. I used one pump for my entire face using a sponge. I set my face with Coty Airspun Loose Powder in Translucent. I looked in the mirror and Holy Toledo, my skin actually looked good! There was a slight glow to my face and my light rosacea, acne scars, along with a few breakouts and some enlarged pores, appeared to be diminished.

Here is how I look overall wearing Guerlain Parure Gold (Still in my nightgown no less!):

I am impressed that a foundation that looked brassy on my hand seems to have transformed into a perfect shade for my skin. I suspect that the gold effects blend onto facial skin better than it does on the body. I wish my camera could capture the soft, ever-so-slight pearl effect. Unlike like some highlight powders that can make skin look oily or like a disco ball, the gold pearl in the Parure Gold formula is very subtle. Moreover, the foundation is a medium coverage that does not feel heavy on my skin. It actually feels light, like my skin can breathe.

I have been wearing the foundation every day since last Saturday. So far, I have not experienced any irritation and/or breakouts. The foundation does not cake, slide off, turn color, or look heavy/unnatural. Since I only need one pump to cover my face, I can see this product lasting me a long time.

Overall, I think this foundation is worth the investment because it makes my skin look amazing.

My Experiment With Front Curls and Side Rolls

Last night after my shower, I decided to do experiment with my hair set. Normally, I roll my almost-dry/damp hair down from my center part using my Conair Foam Rollers:

In an effort to "change things up a bit" from my usual routine, I wanted to try to do a style similar to Betty Grable (first picture above) and the iconic Lucille Ball:

To start, I rolled my bettie bangs forward in the smallest curlers in the set (ie the blue). Then, using my rattail comb, I sectioned off a three inch long section of hair behind my bangs (same width as the bangs) and rolled it forward in smaller sections using the yellow curlers. To finish, I rolled the rest of my hair using the green and pink curlers. I wrapped my head in a scarf and went to bed.

This morning, I took all the curlers out and used my ceramic curling iron to smooth out any curler dents. I brushed my hair out slowly and used a light shaping hairspray to help better shape the curls. I brushed the front 'poof' section and sprayed with hair spray.

I rolled a section of hair on both sides of the poof and created two rolls. I secured the rolls with bobby pins. I put in two red daisy hair flowers I made and viola, the style was done.

Latest Artwork and Vintage-Inspired Home Updates (Picture Heavy)

In an effort to get back to normal life, I have been working hard at the office and at home to stay busy. I find that during times of stress, if I keep myself occupied with job tasks and creative activities, I feel better. I would love to get back to the gym again but I know that I have to pace myself. I cannot have too much on my plate so I will just take things as they go.

Nevertheless, I have made a few houseware purchases at my local Home Goods store, converted a plain table lamp and a simple bud vase into mid-century inspired pieces, and have completed an array of atomic-inspired paintings for the house.

So, let's start with the housewares! Here is a tall, orange ceramic vase I found at Home Goods for $19.99 USD. It stands about two feet (24 inches) tall:

I also found another amazing starburst mirror at Home Goods! I found my first one there in February. This one is slightly bigger in diameter and boasts silver-toned facets. It retailed for $49.99 USD:

Now, here is an orange ceramic bud vase I found at my local Michaels Craft store. It was plain orange and it cost about $4.99 USD. I decorated it with DecoColor Paint pens in aqua blue and gold.

This lamp used to stand on a side table in my guest bedroom.

The base was white and the shade was an off-white cream shade. I think I bought it about 5 years ago. I painted the shade with a blend of clear mixing medium and antique white acrylic paint. When the shade was dry, I applied gold acrylic paint using a damp sponge. I then applied another coat of the paint mix and when it was dry, I applied another round of gold paint. Using a gold DecoColor paint pen, I drew on simulated string on the top and bottom of the shade.

As for the base, I painted two coats of orange acrylic paint. I let it dry and then applied a clear varnish mixed with 1960s vintage, square gold glitter.

Now, here are the new paintings! This large canvas is located in my foyer. I wanted bright, primary colors:

Here are two 8x10 atomic cat paintings I did using acrylic paint and paint pens. I found inspiration in a 1950s carved wood set of cats that were listed on Esty:

This is one of two matching 4x5 canvases. Again, I used a blend of acrylic and paint pen:

This next painting was inspired by a 1950s, atomic-era tablecloth I saw listed on Etsy. I added orange to make the muted colors pop. Again, I used both acrylic paint and DecoColor paint pens:

Back in February, I purchased a set of plain wood shadow boxes. Until a week ago, they were sitting unfinished in my basement. I was not sure what to do with them or what colors to use and then an idea came to me, go pink! I have pink tones in my upstairs foyer/hallway. I also have a pink diamond and black starburst table runner I made using vintage fabric.

I painted the shadow boxes with two tones of pink acrylic paint and I also used gold paint along with black and gold paint pens. I painted two pink diamonds with starbursts on two matching 8x10 canvases. Here is the result:

Inside the shadow boxes, I placed vintage blown glass figurines. One is a whale and the other is a mouse, both from Norway.

So, there you have it! The latest updates to my slowly transforming vintage abode. The process is taking time (going from modern to vintage that is) but it is worth it!

Honoring My Aunt, Julia "Jean" Herrmann

I would like to share with you all my celebration for my late aunt, Julia "Jean" Cunnginham Herrmann. My aunt meant a lot to me and her passing has really hit me hard. Despite my sadness, I would like to honor and rejoice in the life she lived.

My Auntie Jean was born in 1947 in Dublin, Ireland. She came to the United States in the 1960s and met my uncle John, a Baltimore, MD police officer. They fell in love, got married, and had two sons, Erik and Neill. Auntie Jean became a citizen of the US in 1972. After my uncle left the Baltimore Police Department, he became a federal agent and as a result, my aunt and her family got to live in several locations like Cape Cod, Massachusetts and the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

During these years, Auntie Jean was a devoted mother, loving wife, and a professional working full time. She worked for a small regional airline, Henson, and then went on to receive a college degree from Salisbury State University. Auntie Jean eventually went on to work for the office of the President for the University. Despite my aunt's busy career, she always made time for her family. Family came first, no matter what.

When I was a kid, I loved it when Auntie Jean and the boys came to visit my family. Because most of our family still lived in Ireland and the UK, my auntie's visits were especially wonderful during the holidays. I recall the excitement and joy I felt when I was told my auntie was coming to stay with us! She was always so happy, loving, kind, fun, and just full of energy! She was also an amazing cook. Her Maryland-inspired seafood dishes were out of this world!

In addition, Auntie Jean was a very talented quilter. One Christmas a few years ago, she sent me a beyond gorgeous kitty-themed holiday quilt throw. The detail in every square and stitch is simply stunning. My mother has a queen bed size quilt my Auntie made for her and again the love and attention to detail that went into it cannot be described.

Auntie Jean had a great sense of humor and an beautiful laugh. Without even trying, she was truly the life of the party. Her warm presence, articulate conversation, and gentle voice just made everyone want to be around her.

As I got older, Auntie Jean and Uncle John continued to be a part of family events like graduations, weddings, showers, and visits. I remember several nights Auntie Jean and my mom would stay up late and drink cocktails as they reminisced about their childhood. I can still hear their jubilant cackles of laughter melodically filling the humid summer air as fireflies flickered in the distance.

Whenever Auntie Jean and I talked on the phone, it felt like no time had passed. We just picked up where we left off. In August 2004, Auntie Jean came to Washington DC with my cousin, Ally, and we went to the famous Kennedy Center to see "The Producers." Alan Ruck (from "Ferris Buller's Day Off" and "Spin City") played the part of Mr. Bloom. Auntie Jean paid for our tickets and I then took Ally and Auntie Jean on a museum tour of DC and then out to dinner. After our girls' day out, Auntie Jean and Ally stayed overnight at my house and we stayed up and talked for hours.

In 2008, Auntie Jean fell ill and after a few doctor visits, it was determined that she had pancreatic cancer. Despite her diagnosis, Auntie Jean was a fighter. She refused to let her cancer win. Auntie Jean was treated at Johns Hopkins University and even participated in a cutting-edge study/medical trial. The results of this study proved to be successful and as a result, Auntie Jean seemed to be getting better. When I saw Auntie Jean in early 2010, she looked great. I was amazed and felt like there was hope.

However, in 2011, Auntie Jean began to experience a few health setbacks. Regardless of this, she was continued to fight. Whenever she and my mother talked on the phone, it was Auntie Jean who was being the strong one. My mother told me that on one of the last calls they shared, Auntie Jean told Mom that she was ready to go but she was worried that she was leaving behind "all these sad people." She went on to say, " I am ready. I need you to be brave. Can you be brave for me?"

After Auntie Jean left the hospital for the last time, she went to her brother's home to receive palliative care. On the 13th of June, at 9:15 pm, Auntie Jean left this earth. My family laid her to rest on June 18th.

Even though I am sad and quite angry cancer took my aunt's life, I am relieved that she is no longer in pain. I want her back. I wish I could make all of this go away like a bad dream I can wake from.

But, I know what I ask, what I plead for, is impossible. But what I can do is celebrate my aunt. I will treasure the gifts of strong femininity and wit she gave me. I will honor her love of family. I will always remember her beautiful skin and big, boundless smile. I will relish her lust for life and never forget who she was as my aunt and my friend.

You live always in my heart, Auntie Jean. May your journey to eternity be filled with love and light.

Slowly Returning to Normal Life

First and foremost, I would like to apologize for my long abscence. I have been away due to family issues as well as the death of my aunt. This has been a trying time for me and my family. We are getting through things slowly each day and I know in time, we will be ok.

Nevertheless, I am going to be doing some fun posts soon! I recently made some wonderful vintage, mid-century inspired houseware purchases that I am going to share with you all. I also have been working on creating a tiki room in my sunroom. In addition, I am going to do a summer makeup tutorial.

Back from A Little Hiatus (Boca Raton and Vintage Goods!) [Picture Heavy]

Hey, all! I am back after a little hiatus. In the time I have been away, I went to Florida for 6 days (I have also been crazy busy with work!). I visited the in-laws and did some shopping at a couple antique malls. I cannot wait to share with you my wares, one of which includes my very first lucite bag! I am so excited.

On the afternoon of Thursday, the 19th of May, I flew on JetBlue from Washington Dulles to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Upon my arrival, I was picked up by my mother-in-law, aka "Mammaleh," and we, along with my father-in-law, went out to dinner at JB's On the Beach in Boca Raton. I had a delicious dish of sea scallops, veggies, and wild rice. I was starving! All I had on the plane was my Kashi granola bar and a diet coke.

After dinner, we went back to the condo my in-laws own in Boca Raton. Mammaleh and I had a drink and then went to bed. The next day, Mammaleh and I went to the Hillsboro Antique Mall in Pompano Beach.

My hair is in wet pigtails (I blew my bangs dry). My hair gets very frizzy due the Florida humidity so I usually do ponytails, pigtails, or wear snoods. I am wearing a 50s pink and white cotton sundress I bought on Etsy.

After a 15 minute drive, we arrived at the antique mall. I was so ready to browse and shop! The day's agenda was going to be dishware, bakelite, and lucite bags. Mammaleh wanted to look for milkglass.

After a few minutes of walking around, I was floored to see this:

I. Wanted. EVERYTHING!!! I knew that 1: my bugdet won't allow it and 2: there was no way I could bring it back on the plane! Moreover, as many of you know, Franciscan Starburst is very collectible and as a result, expensive. For example, look at the price on the serving platter:

However, I did find the same platter listed on Etsy for 65 dollars so maybe I should have gotten it. Either way, I will just have to collect slowly or hope to get the odd piece here and there as gifts.

In the end, I did buy a Franciscan creamer. I was listed for $7.50 USD. It had a flaw on it but when we got it back home, Mammaleh cleaned it with a sponge and the flaw was gone! I think it was a cream stain or residue.

I saw a couple bangles of bakelite but what the sellers wanted for them was too high. Mammaleh did not find her milkglass sugar bowl but she did spot this for me in a lighted display case:

I totally wanted to die! It is a lucite bag made with mother-of-pearl and clear lucite. I love it! The price was 110.00 USD but the seller gave me 10% off. I did see a nice number of pretty lucite bags but the prices were a bit high for me. After comparing this bag to a couple of others, I decided on this one. I love it!! It was a little dirty but I cleaned it with mild soap and water using q-tips and paper towels.

After making my purchases, Mammaleh and I went home and had lunch with my father-in-law. Later that day, we went out to eat with family at Boca Town Center. Here is my outfit:

I am wearing a light blue Bettie Page sundress (bought at Bygones Vintage in Richmond, Va), bakelite bangles, white moonglow necklace, and a pair of off-white wedges from BC Footwear. I am also carrying my new lucite bag!

As we got in the car, a muscovy duck approached and hissed at us. Apparently, he was begging for food:

After dinner, we went back home and had a few cocktails on the back patio. The night air felt so nice!

The next day was beach day! Mammaleh and I drove to her cousin's house in Boca and us three gals had a beach day complete with crackers, cheese, and wine!

I was swimming earlier in the water. It felt so nice despite the fact there were reports of sea lice (jellyfish eggs or larvae). I did not experience any side effects (itching or burning) so I guess the water there was not affected.

After our fun day, us gals went back home and cleaned up so we could go out for a family dinner at the Whale's Rib in Deerfield. The Whale's Rib is amazing spot for seafood, raw bar items, and beer by the pitcher. I indulged on fried shrimp and it was so perfect to end the day with!

Sunday, the next day, was pool day at the condo and antique mall shopping. We went to The Sugar Chest Antique Mall on Federal (Route 1). The mall was huge! They were also having a major sale. Anything over 26 USD gets 15 to 20% off. I was again on the hunt for bakelite and anything housewares.

I found a set of Blue Heaven dishes (6 person set) but the cups and dinner plates had major crazing and chipping. I spotted many bakelite bangles but I decided on colors that I was lacking in my collection: celery and brown.

The celery end-of-day piece was 70 USD and the two tortoiseshell spacers were 35 and 38 USD. The 20% discount made my total around 114.00 USD. I was pleased as punch!

Despite my fun day with Mammaleh and cool bakelite finds, there was a brief moment when the trip to the antique mall was a bit odd/uncomfortable.

As we were browsing the aisles, out of the corner of my eye I spotted an entire case of get this, Nazi memorabilia. I was shocked. Mammaleh was shocked. There were busts of Hitler, iron crosses, books, and some other things. I had no idea people would even collect that. Talk about crazy. I was especially shocked because there is a large Jewish community in South Florida. I have no clue what the seller was thinking. (I know the mall itself was not selling it since the antique mall is comprised of individual rent/floor spaces for sellers.) Of all the locales to have that stuff for sale, South Florida is not the place. And that is all I am going to say about it.

Anyway, getting back to the positive! Mammaleh bought some 50s era pottery from California Originals and I bought my three bangles. We then went back to the condo for lunch and then it was off to pool with my father-in-law!

We hung out at the pool for a couple of hours and then it was back to the house to hang out on the patio before dinner.

Here is the main view outside the patio. There are canals for boats as well as the river in the middle, ie the Hillsboro River that connects to the Inlet that leads to the Atlantic. It is fun to hang out, have snacks and have a cocktail, watching the boats go by.

That night we ordered in sushi and watched TV. It was a perfect way to end a day.

The next day, Monday, Mammaleh and I went to Home Depot. She needed help picking out new cabinets and granite for her upcoming kitchen remodel.

Later that night, Mammaleh, my father-in-law, cousin Deb, and I went to the Cove for dinner. The Cove is a great local seafood restaurant and bar located on the Intercostal Waterway at the Boca Bridge. Here is a view from our table after sunset, showing the Boca Bridge:

The next day, Tuesday, was the last day. Before heading off to the airport, Mammaleh and I went to Boca Town Center to visit Sephora. I bought a replacement Illamasqua Lipstick in Box (the first one I bought at Vegas broke) and Mammaleh bought some new perfume!

Then, sadly, it was time to go back to DC. I left Fort Laudedale around 2:30 (the flight was delayed) and I arrived around 4:50 pm.

The trip was so nice! It felt good to get away for a while! I cannot wait to go back again!

"Hey, Ugly!" Grappling With That Little Voice In My Head

A while back, the fabulous Penny Dreadful of "Penny Dreadful Vintage" Blog did an outstanding post about body image:

This post got me thinking about my own "body confidence" and it made me realize that not only am I my own worst critic, I am not alone when it comes to self-image.

I have never been one to think of herself as "pretty." When my mother recently asked me if I thought of myself as pretty, I responded, "If I had to answer, I would say 'normal.' I am not ugly but I am not pretty either." My mother expressed concern. I would expect her to. She has a mother's bias because like most mothers, she sees all her children as beautiful.

However, when it comes to my intelligence and wit, I am quite confident and happy. I just wish I could feel the same way about my appearance. Throughout the years, I decided to focus on being smart because I never felt pretty, especially when I compared myself to other girls/women. (This was particularly the case when I was at Viva). So, every day I put my makeup on, do my hair, workout, eat well, and just try to be me.

I know I judge myself too harshly. I see flaws that perhaps no one else does. To others, they may see a just a vintage-clad, redheaded gal with a streak of blond in her hair while I see an awkward girl with a chubby face, thin hair, big bum, and short legs.

Nevertheless, I suspect my acerbic self-criticisms stem from an expectation that others judge me. Basically, I judge myself before others have the chance. That way, I can anticipate any hurt feelings and therefore soften the blow.

But here's the thing, no one is standing around, lining up to pick my looks apart. No one is 'chomping at the bit' to put me under a microscope to better study my flaws. It is human nature for us to be harsh on ourselves but I shouldn't allow this trait to render me vulnerable and I wind up classifying myself as 'ugly.'

Some days are better others in the 'looks department.' For example, days when the hair refuses to cooperate, when my 'time of the month' is approaching, or when the 50s sundress I bought last year is too tight. Regardless of my knee-jerk need to wallow in self-pity, I know that hair can be fixed, my body will go back to normal after my cycle is done, and I can just do more cardio and that dress will fit again.

I know I am a strong, independent, and positive woman. I do not need the approval from other people nor do I base my entire self-worth on trivial things like 'looks.' Despite my self-assured personality, I allow myself to listen to the 'little voice' in my head that seems to shout out, "Hey, ugly!"

Like all things in life, my body image/self-image is a 'work in progress.' I will not gain boundless confidence overnight but I know that if I focus on what's important (i.e. health, family, friends, living life to the fullest) I am going to be okay.

Fun with Black and White

As an artist, I enjoy experimenting with various mediums of art, especially photography. With today's technology, the possibilities are endless! We can take color photos and make them black and white, manipulate light sources, increase contrast, and even create canvas effects.

15 Year Wedding Anniversary Celebration Dinner at L'Auberge Chez Francois!

Yesterday the man and I celebrated 15 years of marriage! I cannot believe time has gone by so fast! I feel fortunate to say "it feels like yesterday!" I love that man so much and I am very lucky to have him in my life!

Ok, ok! Enough with the "schmaltz fest!" (lol!) I would like to share some photos from last night's amazing dinner with the man!

Every year on our anniversary (since 2004), the man and I always go to L'Auberge Chez Francois in Great Falls, Virginia. L'Auberge is a wonderful, quaint, intimate, and delicious French restaurant located in the countryside of Fairfax County. Their cuisine is top-notch, their wines are out of this world, and the service is impeccable!

We had reservations for 8:00 pm. I made sure to eat very light all day so I could truly enjoy the feast about to commence!

I am wearing a navy blue, crepe 1940s dress adored with two rhinestone pins and a self-belt. I wore vintage navy blue gloves and carried a modern beaded cocktail purse covered in silvery-white beading. I am also wearing an amazing pair of Betsey Johnson beaded platforms. Even the heels are beaded! I bought these in late 2006 from Zappos.

Now, to the important part! The meal! After being seated, the man and I started with the house appertif; a lovely blend of Chambord and Champagne. The was even a whole raspberry in the glass! (I wanted to take pictures but the flash on my camera is bright and I did not want to ruin the dining experience of our fellow guests).

As we browsed the menu, the staff brought us herbed ricotta and garlic toast points. The ricotta was amazing and it paired well with the sharpness of the garlic.

For my dinner, I started with the tuna tartar with sour cream sauce and salmon roe, then a gorgeous house salad prepared with endive and fresh roquefort cheese, and then for my main course I had shelled maine lobster accompanied with fresh lump crab covered in a butter sauce that was served with fresh grilled asparagus and citrus.

The man and I both had the marvelous chocolate souffle paired with chocolate cream sauce. I wanted to die! Talk about dessert heaven! Despite my initial hesitation to take pictures, I managed to sneak a quick photo of my souffle, just after it arrived:

After our dessert and coffee were finished, I felt full but not stuffed. I managed to pace myself (even though I wanted to eat everything in its entirety) and in the end, I was satisfied and happy! I cannot wait to go back!

As we left the restaurant and made our way home, the man and I encountered some late night traffic (road construction). So typical of the DC area!

The man and I finally got home around 11:00 pm and he gave me these lovely flowers! I love the colors! So pink!!

I am very happy with the way our anniversary turned out! Despite the fact we had to work all day, our 15th was truly a special day! Again, I am so happy with amazing man of mine! Here is to the next 15 years and beyond!

Outfit Post-Off to Work!

Me early this morning, leaving the house to go to work at the office. It has been on the chilly side lately here in the DC area (50s and low 60s) but today the high temperature is going to be around 73 degrees. That is still a bit cool for me! I cannot wait until the average daily highs are in the 80s!

Nevertheless, just for fun, I wanted to share today's outfit with you all!

-Black and white print, cotton-blend, 1950s deadstock, button-down dress (bought last year).
-Black merino wool Gap cardigan (bought in 2005) adorned with a 1950s rhinestone brooch.
-Red suede wedges made by Natural Comfort (bought from Zappos in 2007)

I was too lazy to re-roll my hair today (I did not wash it but it was washed yesterday) so I applied a bit of Suave Dry Shampoo Spray and put it in a ponytail after my morning shower.

On my face, I am wearing Too Faced Cosmetic nude shadows from their Naked Eye Kit, MAC mascara, foundation, MAC brow pen on brows, MAC Mineralize blush in Dainty, and Besame lipstick in Carmine.

Who Says "You Cannot Wear Vintage From Head to Toe?" My Thoughts

This is me from earlier today. I am wearing vintage clothing at work and my hair is in rolls. This is me everyday without fail. Whether I am at the office, hanging out at home, out for cocktails, or going to bed. I wear vintage. Period.

The other day, the lovely Laura of Betty2ToneVintage blog asked me about thrift and vintage shops here in the DC area. I did some research and found a few websites detailing shops' locations, shop reviews, and an article listing five shops along with a vintage clothing "do and don't" list. Here is a 'copy and paste' of said list:

Vintage Shopping Do’s and Don’ts
DO check the stitching of a top, dress, pant, etc. before purchasing if it looks cheap-y, do not purchase it (unless it is ridiculously cheap and you plan on wearing it twice).
DO expect that some pieces will need to be tailored. Find a tailor you trust ASAP. (Trust us, all clothes look better after they’ve been fitted to you).
DO take a risk on buying vintage pieces; you are not looking for what everyone is buying at J Crew.
DON’T, and this is a big don’t, wear vintage from head to toe. Best rule to live by when debating on adding vintage to your outfit, no more then two pieces (pants and top do not count).

Overall, this is a good list with good advice. However, I admit that the last "don't" is a bit bothersome. What is wrong with wearing vintage "from head to toe?"

I agree that not all vintage clothing looks good. Some examples of 'bad' vintage are certain polyester fabrics, 70s butterfly collars, 80s shoulder pads, corduroy bell bottoms, late 60s styles, and cat suits. Vintage or contemporary, there will always be a difference between flattering and stylish and ill-fitting and down right ugly.

Nevertheless, I know that many of us vintage bloggers wear vintage "from head to toe" while many wear vintage mixed with modern pieces. There really is no wrong answer when it comes to personal style. If a look suits you, wear it. Who cares if it's all vintage or not?

I have never been one to worship fashion and/or follow the trends. Sometimes when I am in my salon getting my hair done, I will flip through Vogue, Glamour, InStyle, Harper's, or Allure. These publications will often feature their "Must Have" list, a "Do Don't" article, or a "What's In and What's Out" piece. Do I really care of if the editors of InStyle say gladiator sandals out and jeweled flat sandals are in? No. Therefore, I am not concerned if a "DC fashionista" deems my pure vintage look as a 'fashion faux pas.'

The main reason for "do don't" lists is marketing. If editors and fashion houses decide what's in, what's out, or what's a 'no no,' they make money. The fashion house creates the must-have style, they pay the magazine for advertising, and the editors and the fashion house make money. Create a false demand for a trend, lay back, and let the fashion-obsessed masses run to their local mall or Neiman or Saks to buy the latest thing so they can be an "in."

As for the 'no all vintage rule,' I am not sure why some think wearing all vintage is a bad idea. Who decided this? Now, like I said, I totally understand the classic rules regarding fit, tailoring, dressing for your figure, matching colors, complimentary colors, accessorizing, not mixing stripes and plaids, and making sure your clothes are in good condition. But when it comes to applying the whole "do and don't" mantra to style, that is where I refuse to yield.

Vintage clothing flatters my figure best. Modern skirts, jeans, and pants have waist-lines that are too low. Due to my small waist and round hips, lower waist anything makes me look dumpy and bottom-heavy. In addition, contemporary cardigans are cut longer to match lower waist lines. Whenever I pair a modern-made cardigan with a 50s shirtwaist dress, the bottom edge of the cardigan hits the top of my bum and as a result, it covers my waist like a tent! Moreover, the cardigan makes me look shapeless and lumpy from behind. So, I wear vintage-made cardigans that are shorter in length that slim my waist and complement my shape.

I could give several examples why I prefer vintage over contemporary fashion I do not want to bore you! l also do not want to distract myself from my argument! Nevertheless, I wear vintage simply because I like it and because it looks good on my body. If a gal wants to wear something she likes that looks good on her, then why not wear it?

So, ladies, what do you think? I would love, I mean really love to hear your thoughts on this one!

Review of Illamasqua Lipstick in Box

I have fallen in love again, with Illamasqua! Illamasqua is a UK cosmetics brand that is bursting with color and quality! Their nail polish, pigments, shadow, foundation primer and lipstick shades are amazing!

I am always on the hunt for the "holy grail" of red lipstick and I have found it once more in Illamasqua's lipstick in 'Box.' Shrinky Inky of Inkyknits Blog suggested Box to me a while back and I am so glad she did!

While I was in Las Vegas for VLV, I stayed at the Palazzo/Venetian and since their is a huge, huge Sephora attached to the casino/hotel, I was not going to pass up the opportunity to browse this amazing store!

The Venetian Sephora has a great selection of Illamasqua products. I wanted *all* of their pigments and red lipsticks (especially Maneater and Sangers) but due to the fact I have so many reds already, I was 'good' and just got Box ($22.00 USD) and Ruthless nail varnish (a bright, warm vintage red creme) for $14.00 USD.

Box is a bright, vintage red that leans cool. Imagine if Russian Red and Ruby Woo had a baby...the result would be Box. Box has a neutral tinge with a touch of blue-based pink mixed in. In certain lights, the color looks warm and in others, the pink tones can really be seen. Hence, the 'neutral' classification fits aptly.

The Illamasqua lipstick pigmentation is intense. We are talking totally opaque, in-your-face color, gals! The texture is on the heavier side and the finish is matte! I love matte lipstick finishes because they always make my lips look fuller. Now, unlike some mattes, I find that Illamasqua lipstick is not drying. Yes, it is on the dry side formula-wise but it does not chap my lips. I always wear MAC Lip Prep and Prime as a lipstick base. Not only does it make lipsticks last longer, it helps shield lips from dryness.

Notice the pink-blue tones? Yet, the tube photo above it, the color looks warm-based!

Here I am, wearing Box matched with Make Up For Ever's Aqua Lip pencil in 8C (I typically wear Box with MAC pencil in Cherry but thanks again to Inky, I tried the 8C and it really pairs well!)

I am wearing a faux fur wrap and a 1940s pale blue beaded hat. I felt like "playing dress up" for a bit! (lol!)

So, if you are looking for a true matte, deeply pigmented lipstick that pulls out all the stops, then give Illamasqua Box a try!

Lipstick Review: Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense #9

This is me wearing Rouge Artist Intense Lipstick #9 by Make Up For Ever. I am outside in my yard, fresh from a great workout at the gym (hence the reason I am wearing a t-shirt!)

Typically, I wear just reds but lately I have been seeking out other shades like orange, coral, and pinks. I think my recent desire to 'change things up a bit' is due on part to the fast-approaching summer season. I have a few 50s playsuits and sundresses that will look great paired with different colors.

While I was in Las Vegas for VLV 14, I stayed at the Palazzo/Venetian. Inside this huge facility is a monstrous-sized Sephora! I often refer to Sephora as my "mothership!" Anyway, not only is this particular location big, it features an entire section featuring Make Up For Ever products. I have visited several Sephora stores that offer Make Up For Ever but never have I seen anything on this scale!

Nevertheless, I purchased the #9 Rouge Artist Intense lipstick ($19.00 USD) and a Smoky Lash Aqua (waterproof) Mascara for $22.00 USD. (I will do a review on that next).

The #9 lipstick is a hot pink with a opalescent pearly sheen. In certain lighting, the #9 appears pink and in others, it takes on a lilac cast. In the above photo, I paired MAC's lip pencil in Magenta with this lipstick. However, Make Up For Ever's Aqua Lip Liner in 16C ($17 USD) is a perfect match for the #9.

This lipstick is very pigmented and feels comfortable on the lips. It is not drying nor is it too creamy. Moreover, the Rouge Artist Intense line of lipsticks (50 total colors in three finishes: matte, pearl, and satin) are very long-lasting. I can wear most colors 4 hours before needing to touch up.

As I stated before, in certain lighting, this lipstick takes on a lilac cast due to the opalescent pearly finish. In person, #9 looks fuchsia pink. I prefer my reds but when my outfit calls for blue-toned pink, #9 fits the bill beautifully.

Viva Las Vegas 14! My Synopsis and Photos!

Hello, all! I hope everyone is well! I am back from Viva Las Vegas 14 and I have to say that I cannot wait to do it again! I am also sad that Viva is over so soon! Those 4 days went by quickly!

Nevertheless, I would like to present my VLV 14 experience, complete with photos!

On Wednesday, April 20th, the man (aka my husband) and I departed Washington Dulles bound for Las Vegas at 5:27 pm on United Airlines. After a non-eventful 3+ hour flight, we arrived at McCarran Las Vegas airport at approximately 8:00 pm. The man and I claimed our bags and got a cab to the Palazzo/Venetian Hotel.

At this point, I was starving and it felt like it was past midnight (due to the three hour time difference). We checked into room 45-729 and then went to dinner at Carnevino, a delicious, modern Italian steakhouse. The man had lamb chops and I had parppardelle with wild mushrooms. After dinner, we went back to our room and went to bed.

The next morning, I woke up at 6:20 am. I was still on Eastern Standard Time and after a while, managed to fall back asleep. The man and I woke up again around 9:30 and we ordered room service. I had a gorgeous bagel and schmeer with lox and the man dined on a three-egg omelette. Here is the view from our room as we ate:

The pools and golf course belong to the Wynn Resort. The sun was so bright and the weather was very warm. The average temperature during our stay was in the low 80s. It did not rain once! Talk about a welcome change to the rainy and cold DC weather!

After breakfast, I took a shower and as I started my makeup, I realized that I left my MAC mascara at home! Luckily, there was a huge Sephora in the Palazzo/Venetian complex! I decided to keep my makeup look simple due to the missing mascara and the man and I went to lunch at the Taqueria Cañonita in the Venetian. We had amazing guacamole and chips and I ordered a margarita and the man had a beer. We had lunch and then I went to Sephora and picked up a new tube of mascara, an Illamasqua lipstick called Box, a Illamasqua nail polish in Ruthless (a bright, vintage red creme), and a Make Up For Ever lipstick in a bright pearly hot pink (Rouge Artist Intense #9).

After Sephora, we went back to our room and took a nap. That night we dined at Sushisamba at the Palazzo.

I dined at the NYC location in 2006 and my food was amazing. Sushisamba combines Peruvian and Brazilian cuisine with Japanese flair. They have an extensive sushi menu, tons of sake, and scores of meat and side dishes, done in a South American style. The restaurant was crowded and the mood was lively! I had sushi of course and the man had trio of meats prepared Brazilian style.

The next day, the man and I woke up around 9:15 am and again ordered a fabulous breakfast! I had an egg white frittata and the man selected steak and eggs. The day was sunny and warm. Perfect for a visit to the Neon Museum! The man and I had a scheduled tour for 2:00 pm. We got a cab at the Palazzo taxi stand and made our way downtown, on the other side of Fremont Street.

When we arrived at the Reed Whipple Center and I spotted a few rockabilly folks outside. The man and I went inside and waited for the tour to begin. After checking in and paying 30 USD for our tickets, the museum organizers separated the guests into two groups. Our tour guide was Bill and our tour group was his first "solo" tour! He did a fantastic job!

The white, curvy concrete building across the street is what's left of the La Concha Motel that was built in 1962. The original location was next to the Riviera. In 2006, the motel was demolished but the iconic, sea shell lobby was saved. When the museum is complete, the remnants of the La Concha will serve as the welcome center.

Most of the artifacts owned by the Museum is actually contained in an open, outdoor, fenced-in lot. There are scores of signs from the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. There is also a former sign from a local dry cleaners that dates to the 30s!

As you enter the lot, you are greeted by two big Golden Nugget signs, one from the 50s and another from the 70s. Here is the 50s version:

Even though the temperature was only in the low 80s, the combination of desert air and the fact the sun was beaming down on us, made it feel like it was in the 90s! Thank goodness I brought my parasol!

Along with seeing actual, vintage neon, our amazing guide and historian Bill presented an in-depth and detailed history for several pieces. Here is the Yucca Motel sign from the 50s (the gentleman on the left is Bill):

After an hour+ at the Neon Museum, the man and I returned to the Palazzo and had a late, late lunch. I had a very bad (icky) veggie burger and the man had (according to him) a delicious cheeseburger. After lunch, we went back to our room to rest and then get ready for Friday night shopping and dancing at the Orleans!

The Orleans Hotel and Casino is located on West Tropicana Avenue off the Las Vegas Strip. The closest casinos are the Palms, Rio, and Gold Coast. The Orleans has been the home to Viva Las Vegas for a few years. Before that, it was held at the Gold Coast.

Here is a look of my Friday night outfit:

I am wearing a green and blue print 50s dress with full skirt and crinoline. I was going to do rolls but I decided to do a version of a pageboy instead. This night, the man and I dined at the Canal Street Grille at the Orleans before dancing. The food was delicious but the service was very, very slow for some reason. Nevertheless, we finished our dinner and made our way upstairs. I browsed the vendor rooms and did not buy anything. (at least not yet!)

Then we went to the Bienville room and did some dancin'! After an hour or so, my feet were tired! My Stuart Weitzman heels gave out. But before the man and I made out way back down to the Piano Bar for a drink, I saw Holly from Temperamental Broad and her fabulous beau, Oscar! It was so neato to see Holly in person! Her green dress adorned with sequins was to DIE for! She and I only chatted for a minute or so. I think both of our feet were hurting!

The man and I went to the Piano Bar and had a drink and relaxed for a bit. I was tired! It was nearly 12:30 am when we decided to go back to the Palazzo. My dancin' feet were done!

The next day was the car show at the Orleans! I was really looking forward to this! The man was too since he was a gearhead when he was younger. He used to own and race a 1971 GTO. The man and I had a late breakfast and made our way to the Orleans around lunchtime. I was floored at the size of the lot and the number of cars was equally staggering! There were so many people too! The man and I also saw an Elvis impersonator officiate a wedding. Too much!

After taking in the sights at the car show, the man and I hung out for a while at the pool party and then we went back to the Palazzo. I needed a nap and wanted to shower off all of that sunblock!

The man and I had dinner at the hotel and then got ready for Saturday night! I wore a yellow and purple 1950s circle dress with crinoline and I did my hair in rolls. I also rolled the back since the curl refused to cooperate!

We arrived at the Orleans around 9:30 pm and went upstairs to the ballrooms to check things out. We hit the vendor rooms and browsed. I saw so many cute things, including sun tops, shoes, swim suits, hats, and jewelry. The man bought a fab gray wool hat at the HepKat booth and then I saw Holly and Oscar again! Holly and I talked for a bit and the man took our picture!

As always, Holly looked AMAZING! Her hair and dress were gorgeous! It was so great to see her twice in a row! I wish I saw/meet other bloggers! I would have loved to have seen Kim, Tasha, Barbara, and Dollie. There were just so many people there and the venue was huge! I think for the next time, we need to schedule a meet up! I also need to bring my phone! Can you believe I left my phone at home on my bathroom sink?! Thank goodness the man had his or I would have no pictures!

After seeing Holly one of the vendor rooms, I spotted the infamous Allyn Scura booth! I was in vintage eyewear HEAVEN!!!! There were so many frames to choose from. I just wanted to sit on the floor and surround myself in all that vintage glory! I wanted to make it my home!

As I was browsing through the vast amount of eyewear, I saw a fabulous pair of pale blue and clear acetate cat eye frames. I knew instantly they had to be mine!

Before I made my purchase, I had a wonderful chat with a stylish man named Andre. He was helping out at the Allyn Scura booth. His style was 1940s perfection!

After buying my new cat eyes, the man and I went to the Bienville room and listened to some fabulous music and danced a bit. We got a drink, hung out for a while, and then went back to the Palazzo. I was tired and it was late!

The next day, we had breakfast and went to the Atomic Testing Museum.

The Atomic Testing Museum is associated with the Smithsonian Institution. It features the history, evolution, and science behind atomic energy. The exhibit starts with World War II, the post war period, the atomic age, the space era, the 70s and 80s, and then ends with modern atomic uses. There is also a real piece of the Berlin Wall on display along with an I beam from the World Trade Center.

The museum contains several artifacts like hard hats, goggles, military equipment, remnants of mannequins used in testing, signs, rock specimens, a bunker simulating an atomic test, an exhibit featuring a real 1950s office, and there is even a real (albeit stuffed) mountain lion. In the 50s, a mountain lion was discovered dead under a trailer in area 12 of the Nevada Test Site. It apparently died to starvation and radiation.

One of the cool aspects of the museum details how the atomic tests actually were a tourist draw to the city of Las Vegas. People would watch the mushroom clouds in the distance from town. Local casinos and hotels would advertise upcoming tests to attract guests! There was even a Miss Atomic Bomb Beauty Pageant! Talk about a different era!

The man and I were at the museum for over two hours and by the time we were done, it was 5:00 pm! Sadly, there was no time to make it over to the Viva pool party at the Orleans! We had dinner reservations at Aureole in the Mandalay Bay for 8:30 pm.

After the museum, we made our way back to the Palazzo and took a quick rest and then got ready for dinner. Dinner was amazing! Aureole features a huge, open glass tower of wine complete with wine angels who retrieve your wine selection. Let me tell you, the wine list is so big, the sommelier hands you an iPad to browse from! That's how big the wine list is!

The man had caviar to start and I opted for the crudo of yellow tail and avocado. For main courses, I had the salmon and risotto and the man dined on a meat course. For dessert, we had a brownie tart accompanied with a 1982 port. By the time we left, I was in a food coma!

The next day was Monday and it was time to check out of the Palazzo and go back to DC. Our flight, United 70, left Vegas at 3:15 pm and we connected in Denver. Our flight to Dulles left Denver on time and we arrived at Dulles around 1 am. We got a cab home and promptly went to bed. It felt so good to be back home in our bed, cuddling with our kitty. (I always miss my furbaby whenever I travel).

After my dentist appointment on Wednesday, I took my new glasses to my optician and had them fitted with my prescription. Here is how they look:

I really love the shape and color! I now have three pairs of vintage cat eye glasses. I can totally see myself collecting more! A girl can never have to many accessories!

So, gals, there you have it! I really enjoyed Viva and I would love to it again next year! I also want to do the Denver Modernism show in August! The man has clients there and any excuse to go to Colorado is good for me!

Also, for those bloggers I missed out on meeting, I am sorry we did not get the chance this time around! I hope we can meet next time!

Basic Nude Eye Look for Daytime

In honor of the fast-approaching Viva Las Vegas 14, I would like to present a nude eye tutorial. The first three eye tutorials were bright, intensely-hued, glittery looks appropriate for evening. This one, however, is a simple look that would be great for day. In the 40s and 50s, day makeup was basic. The eyes were left understated and the focus was on defined brows, black glossy lashes, rougey cheeks, and a strong red lip. However, in the evening, ladies often wore shades of blue, green, gray, or lavender on eyes.

Moreover, if you want to keep this look 'low-key' but want to 'kick it up a notch,' you can add a black cat wing eyeliner on the top lashline.

Here is me before makeup this morning. Eugh! I need to get some makeup on my face quickly!

To start, I applied Nars Pro-Prime Smudge-Proof Eyeshadow Base on my entire eyelid to brow bone and on my lower lid, I applied my own blend of MAC Paint Pots in Soft Ochre and Painterly:

Then, I applied MAC shadow in Orb (a pale matte vanilla custard) using a MAC 213 brush. On my crease, I applied MAC's Omega shadow (a soft, matte cork brown) using a MAC 230 brush. I then applied MAC Vanilla shadow (a satiny pale vanilla ice cream shade with hint of shimmer) on my brow bone using a 217 brush. To finish, I curled my lashes with my She Uemura curler and coated lashes with MAC Opulash in Bad, Bad, Black.

Orb is the second shadow in the top row. Omega is the last shadow in the second row and Vanilla is the first shadow in the first row.

Pink and Purple Eye Look with Opal Pink Glitter!

In continuance of my Viva Las Vegas evening/dance eye makeup series, today I present to you a third shadow look using purple, pink, and white opal pink microglitter. On my lips, I am again wearing Make Up For Ever's Rouge Artist Intense Satin Lipstick in #45 (a blue-based, cool-toned, cherry red).

To start, I applied the Nars Eyeshadow primer on my entire eyelid, ie from lashes to brow bone. I dampened my MAC 213 brush with Trish McEvoy's Shadow Transformer and then dipped the brush onto Stars n Rockets shadow. I applied the shadow on my lower eyelids. The shadow transformer makes sheer shadows more intense. If you do not have a shadow transformer liquid, Visine works wonders too!

Using a MAC 230 brush, I applied MAC's India Ink (a deep, matte cool-toned purple) onto my crease and then applied a light wash of MAC shadow in Crystal on top with a MAC 217 brush. To make the crease shadow look extra smooth, I blended it with a MAC 227 brush.

On my brow bone, I applied a blend of MAC shadows in Crystal Avalanche and Yogurt. I did a thinner version of cat eye liner using the Chanel liquid liner. I did not want to create a thicker line because I wanted to properly showcase the glitter.

In order to properly adhere the glitter to my lower lids, I mixed a tiny dot of MAC Pro Eyeliner Mixing Medium (a clear gel) with the MAC Pro glitter on the back of my hand and I put it on my lower lids using a MAC 242 brush. On my lower lids, I applied the Chromagraphic pencil in Rich Purple. To set the liner and make it look less stark, I applied a light amount of Stars n Rockets using a MAC 214 brush. On the corners of my inner eyes, I applied a touch of MAC Pink Freeze shadow (a frosty light pink) as a highlight. To finish, I curled lashes using my curler and then coated both sets of lashes with MAC Opulash Mascara.

Interesting note, MAC's Stars n Rockets shadow looks pink in the shadow pan but in certain flashes of light and when photographed, the shadow looks lilac or lavender in tone.

Blue and Charcoal Eye Look- "Enchantment Under the Sea"

Because VLV 14 is fast-approaching, I am going to post a series of evening/party makeup tutorials. Yesterday, I featured a gold-toned, glitter look and today I did a bright blue and charcoal look.

During VLV, I plan to wear my 1950s emerald green, circle party dress. My dress' color is a blue-toned green therefore I created a cool-toned eyeshadow look to match.

I started this look by applying Nars eyeshadow primer from upper lash line to brow bone. Then, I applied MAC's Paint Pot in "Rollickin" to my lower lids using MAC's brush in 242. I then applied MAC's Electric Eel shadow to the lower lids using a MAC 213 brush. On my crease, I put on MAC's shadow in Print using a MAC 230 brush.

On my browbone, I applied a blend of MAC Vanilla and Crystal Avalanche shadows with a MAC 217 brush. I then put on MAC Liquidlast liner to my upper lash line and applied Urban Decay 24/7 pencil in Electric on my lower lash line. To complete the look, I applied MAC Opulash Mascara on both sets of lashes.

On my lips, I am wearing Make Up For Ever's "Rouge Artist Intense" Lipstick in Satin #45 (a cool-toned cherry red) and MAC Lip Pencil in Cherry.

The next eyeshadow look I plan to do is a pink/purple-toned look. I cannot wait!

Glittery Eye Look for VLV!

While doing laundry and tidying the house (notice the basket of dirty clothes in the background? lol) on this chilly Saturday afternoon, I decided to take some time out and create a glittery eye look (good for VLV or any night out). Since VLV 14 is less than a month away, I have begun planning my clothing list and organizing my makeup kit.

Since the evening attire at Viva is centered around party dresses, glitzy jewelry/accessories, and fancy hair, your makeup should reflect your party look.

Today's look has cat wing liner, soft, beige-gold glitter, smoky shadow, and pale gold eyeliner. Here are the products used:

To start, I applied Nars Pro-Prime Smudge-Proof Eyeshadow Base on my entire eye lid (from upper lashline to brow bone). Then using the pale blue palette knife, I blended MAC Paint Pot in Rubenesque and Ben Nye Fireworks cream shadow in F1. I brushed the mix on my lower lids using a MAC 242 brush.

Using a MAC 213 brush, I put on Satin Sheets eyeshadow from Too Faced Cosmetics' "Naked Eye" kit on my lower lids. On my crease, I applied "Like a Virgin" (seen above) and my browbone, I put on "In the Buff."

Using MAC's Liquidlast Liner in Point Black, I did a cat wing liner with MAC's 208 brush. With Urban Decay's "Heavy Metal" Glitter Eye Liner in "Midnight Cowboy" on my lower lids. Since the glitter is suspended in a clear gel, it tends to dry a bit slow so I used my hairdryer on 'low' to set it properly.

On my lower lash line, I applied Make Up For Ever's Aqua Eyes Liner in 9L. To set the liner, I applied the "Satin Sheets" eyeshadow using a MAC 214 brush.

To finish, I applied MAC's Opulash Mascara in "Bad, Bad, Black."

I really love this glitter because it stays on and does not flake at all! It will stay on all night, even through hours of dancing! MAC's Liquidlast is also a wonderful product! The liner will not smudge, flake, or cause 'raccoon eyes!' To remove both, cold cream or an oil-based eye makeup remover works wonders!

I will be doing a few more eye looks before VLV starts. I plan to wear 1950s, emerald green party dress and I think a blue-green shadow look would be fun!

VLV Trip Planning Finally Done!

Today, the man and I finally completed our Viva Las Vegas vacation details! We will be flying out of Dulles on the 20th and return on the 25th! We will also be staying at the Venetian! I have been to Vegas three times and I have stayed at the Tropicana, Caesars, and the JW Marriott in Summerlin. I have visited the Venetian during each visit but I have never stayed there as a guest! I am so excited!!!

I am looking forward to shopping at the Canal Shoppes and having a margarita paired with some amazing guacamole at Taqueria Canonita!

Part of me is a little disappointed that I am not staying at the Orleans (where Viva is being held) but that is okay. I am looking forward to all the wonders Vegas offers and the Rockabilly fun that is Viva! I also hope to meet other vintage bloggers! We really need to plan a meet up for sure!

With less than a month left before Viva, all I need to do is pack, get my party dresses dry-cleaned, get my hair done, get the brows done, and do the nails with a fresh coat of CND Shellac!

Goodbye, Elizabeth Taylor (1932-2011)

As I was making breakfast this morning for the man and I, I turned on the news and saw that Dame Elizabeth Taylor had died. She was 79.

When I was a little girl, I saw the 1944 classic, "National Velvet" and instantly felt mesmerized by Elizabeth's passion, beauty, and feisty spirit.

I recall a lazy, rainy Sunday afternoon in my freshman year of college I spent watching "Cleopatra" (1963). The movie was a sweeping epic that involved elaborate costumes, thousands of extras, and lavish sets. The sexual tension between Elizabeth and Richard Burton was so amazing it was practically palatable!

Throughout the years as Elizabeth got older, she took on meaty/ tough roles like Martha "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" and became a favorite subject of the paparazzi.

Along with Elizabeth's personal life and cinematic work, she was also an avid spokeswoman for the fight against AIDS. Elizabeth was one of the forerunners of the movement who highlighted the need for support, understanding, and funding for AIDS research.

In the announcement of her death, newscasters stated that Elizabeth was one of the last of the "golden era of Hollywood." Elizabeth Taylor was the epitome of the glamour and glitz that was the real, original Hollywood starlet. May she live on in every woman who blazes her own trail, refuses to back down, and looks damn good doing it!

We will miss you, Dame Elizabeth! Thank you and farewell.

A Sunny Saturday Afternoon and Outfit Post

On this lazy, sunny Saturday afternoon, the man, the cat (seen above lounging in a sunbeam), and I are enjoying the 61 degree temperatures. Yesterday was 79 degrees! But tomorrow is going to be 53 degrees and then rain next week. You just gotta love the 'yo-yo' weather that is spring! I am ready for warmer days but I just have to survive the ever-increasing pollen count! For example, the local count for the DC area on Wednesday was in the 'moderate
range and by yesterday afternoon, it was in the 'high' category!

This is a looking-upwards view of a tree in my front yard. Despite the beauty of trees in bloom, my allergies are going haywire! I finally went to the doctor on Thursday and got a shot and a prescription for methylprednisolone.

Even though I feel so much better than I did earlier this week, I am still sneezing and my eyes are still a bit itchy! However, by this coming Wednesday (ie when I finish my prescription) I should be back to normal. I am looking forward to running outdoors again! The treadmill is boring!

So, today the man and I decided to treat ourselves and order Domino's pizza and I so sorry we did! It was dismal. I do not eat pizza often so I was really disappointed. Nevertheless, we each had one piece and then threw the rest out. I then made a cup of ginger tea with honey to calm the icky feeling in my belly.

After my tea, I tidied the house and checked on my hibiscus that I left outside all day yesterday and overnight. My poor plant has been indoors all winter and I wanted to give 'her' some direct sunlight and fresh air. I think 'she' looks happy!

When I got home after work on Thursday, I opened my mailbox and saw that my new Freddies of Pinewood jeans arrived! I bought them from a seller on ebay. They were 45.00 USD and they arrived super fast! I had to order the 30 waist since the 28 were out of stock. The 26 waist would have fit but due to my 'ample posterior,' the 34 inch hips would have been waaay to small. I wish the jeans came in 26 waist and 37 hips and I would be set!

In an effort to shrink the jeans to fit, I washed them three times in hot water and then put them in the dryer. After washing and drying, my Freddies are still a bit big in the waist and seat. I wonder if I can have them taken in at my local tailor. What do you think, seamstresses?

I can finally notice that my hair starting to get longer. Instead of getting trims every 6 weeks, I have been getting them at every 12. I would my hair long enough to do more styles, especially a proper 40s up-do!

Julie Hewett Lipstick "Rouge Noir" Review!

In early February, I visited my hometown of Richmond, Virginia for a few days. During my visit, I went to Carytown on a chilly afternoon. After buying a few vintage goodies at Bygones Vintage Clothing, I spotted Le Visage Makeup Studio and decided to check it out.
As some of you may know, I am a sucker for all things makeup, especially lipstick! Le Visage is a cosmetic boutique that specializes in small, niche brands like Julie Hewett Los Angeles. Julie Hewett was the head makeup artist for the film "Pearl Harbor." During production, Julie realized the modern lipstick shades in her kit were unable to adequately recreate the vibrant lipstick colors of the 1940s. So, Julie created her own shades and thus, the Noir Collection was born! The Noir Collection ($22.50 USD each) contains five shades of highly-pigmented red tones ranging from burgundy, crimson, pink-red, warm red, coral red to frosty nude.

While browsing in the shop, I spotted the Julie Hewett display and I instantly fell in LOVE with Femme Noir (a pink-based red) and Rouge Noir (a warm-based red). The vivid colors and the elegant gold tubes just screamed "vintage!" I tried on each and wanted to buy both of them! However, only the Femme Noir was available and the Rouge Noir was out of stock. I bought Femme Noir and was put on the wait list for the Rouge lipstick.

So, after waiting for over a month, Le Visage Makeup Studio called me last week to notify me that Rouge Noir was finally in stock! They mailed lipstick to me (and did not charge me addition for shipping) and it arrived yesterday! Rouge Noir is a beautiful warm, vibrant red. All you need is one swipe on each lip for fully opaque, saturated color.

I think the color is very similar to Besame Cosmetics' Classic Color Lipstick in "Red Hot Red." The tone is tomato-based and Jordana's lip pencil in "Sedona Red" matches perfectly!

Getting Your Beauty Travel Kit Ready for Viva Las Vegas!

Many of us know that Viva Las Vegas 14 is coming up fast! I just found out that the event is now sold out! I am going and this will be my first event! I am very excited! In preparation, I am creating a packing list to ensure I have all the essentials that I will need. My final list will include everything from clothing, accessories, shoes, jewelry, swimwear, personal care to cosmetics! I am learning so much from other gals's blogs about what to wear and what not to wear. So, I would like to do a post about how to update your beauty kit and share a few tips for the big event!

Like I said, I have never done Viva before. Despite my unfamiliarity, I would like to share my tried-and-true tips for makeup and travel.

When it comes to selecting what beauty products and tools to bring, you need to consider your style, what you plan to wear, time of day, event, and how many days you will be away from home.

1. Make sure you have a good-quality cosmetic bag with lots of room for storage. If you plan on packing your makeup essentials in your suitcase, try to use/buy a makeup bag that is made of a material (plastic, vinyl, etc) that can be wiped clean. This comes in handy in case any liquids escape their containers. Also, invest in a bag with a good seal or strong zipper. You do not want any makeup getting on your clothes!

2. If you fly and plan on carrying your makeup with you as a carry-on, you need to familiarize yourself with TSA's rules (Transportation Security Administration) liquids and gels. Here is are two links:

Nevertheless, if you prefer to carry your beauty kit, you will need a standard, clear plastic, zippered bag for all liquids and gels.

Liquids and gels include: liquid foundation, cream foundation, mascara, lipstick, lip gloss, cream to powder eyeshadow, lip balm, gel-based eyeshadow primers, liquid liner, creams, eyeshadow cream, brow gels, brow wax, etc.

If you are concerned about the number of liquid/gel items, you can store them in your checked luggage. Just make sure they are in a plastic ziplock bag (sealed!) and then placed in a sealed makeup/toiletry bag. Remember, keep your vintage safe from spills and stains!

2. Tailor your beauty kit to the number of days you will be away from home. Do you need to pack every tube of lipstick and do you really need every eyeshadow? No, not really. If you have made a clothing list, plan your makeup around what you intend to wear.

In regards to lipsticks, I only wear red but I have several red shades. Therefore, for red lipsticks, a good rule of thumb is to bring a neutral red (Besame Red) that suits many outfit colors (ie navy, black green,charcoal, gray); a cool-toned red (Julie Hewett Femme Noir or MAC Ruby Woo) for pink/purple/blue/blue-green outfits; and a warm red (Besame Red Hot Red) for orange/brown/coral/yellow/orangey-red outfits.

Be sure your travel beauty kit contains foundation, powder, blush, mascara, eyeliner, brow essentials, concealer, foundation primer, SPF foundation or SPF lotion for the face (vital for the pool party and car show), makeup brushes, foundation sponges, blotting papers/sheets for touch-ups, eyelash curler, eyeshadow primer, makeup remover toilettes for correcting makeup mistakes and eyeshadow fall-out, and a nice, yet basic array of eyeshadows.

When it comes to eyeshadow, I like to bring a palette that has nude tones for the day along with a few vibrant colors for the evening. You can find several makeup brands that have palettes that have a variety of neutrals and brights. You can also make your own palette at MAC stores and online. Palettes can be purchased in 4-color and even in 15-color palettes. This way, you can tailor your makeup PERFECTLY to your Viva wardrobe!

Liquid eyeliner is wonderful for creating cat-eye looks and eye glitters like Urban Decay's Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner are great for giving your nightwear/dancing look some 'wow' factor. These liners come in shades from hot pink, green, atomic blue, purple, gold, beige, opal to silver:

This glitter brings me to point #3: Experiment with new makeup looks BEFORE you travel! If you have never used glitter liner, liquid liner, or false eyelashes, you should practice and perfect your eyelooks at home and not in your hotel room just as you are about to go out and burn up the dancefloor! Imagine applying your new eye product(s) and then realizing it is all wrong and/or looks bad! You now have to carefully fix or worse; wash it all off and start again! Talk about frustration and no fun!

So, here is an idea: say you want to try a fun, dramatic false eyelash look for Saturday night at Viva. A few weeks before the event, go buy some cheap 'experiment' false eyelashes like E.L.F:

These lashes can be found at most Target stores and they cost only $1.00 USD! If you mess up or break them, you only lost a buck! With that said, buy a few sets of these lashes to experiment with. Pick a lazy weekend afternoon and practice applying the lashes. Once you 'get the hang' of applying eyelashes correctly, you can invest in a couple of pairs of higher-quality lashes like Sephora, MAC, or Make Up For Ever!

Need professional help? No, not THAT "professional help!" Makeup artist help! If you really want to 'amp up' your look for Viva, make an appointment with a makeup artist! Most makeup counters (Bobbi Brown, Nars, Chanel) and stores (MAC, Sephora) offer makeup services. You can get tips and learn techniques you can practice on your own.

MAC online even has makeup instructional videos! I have been doing makeup for years and I always learn something new whenever I view their artists' tutorials! Here is a great cat-eye liner tutorial:

4. Keep a lipstick, blotter sheets (MAC, Palladio, Clean-n-Clear), and a powder compact in your purse/bag! Do not let the sun and heat at the car show or a shiny nose from dancin' all night ruin your makeup! These items will keep your look fresh and they are all you need! Simple!

5. If you get your brows waxed and/or tinted, it is best to have your appointment 5 days to a week before Viva. Your brow skin will be very sensitive to sun and it will need to heal before heading off to the pool and car show. Get a manicure and pedicure a day or two before travel.

6. Make a list of what you need in your beauty kit. Do this a week or so before travel in case you need to go out and buy what you do not have.

I hope I remembered everything! I am getting more and more excited as the days get closer to Viva! I hope to meet you gals who are going too!

Visiting Las Vegas-The Neon Museum and Fremont Street

I recently posted some travel tips and information about Las Vegas and thanks to a great comment from Clare of Dolly Cool Clare Blog, I would like to add two great places to visit!

The Las Vegas Strip may be the modern-day hotspot, but old Las Vegas, ie Fremont Street, is a must see and experience! I, for one, have never been. I drove by the area in the daytime back in 2003. Another fun, vintage attraction in Las Vegas is the Neon Museum. This museum is located at the east end of the Fremont Street Experience. You need to schedule tours at least a week in advance. The museum in a non-profit organization and they accept donations (minimum is 15.00 USD).

One highlight boasted by the museum is the Neon Graveyard. This collection of 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s neon signs showcase the grand eras of Vegas' past and remind us of the glamorous decadence that once was Las Vegas. I do enjoy the modern-day Strip but I prefer the vintage styling of old Vegas! The new Vegas with its huge, sprawling casinos and animated signs (some even look like TVs) seems flat and soulless. I adore the kitschy neon of the 40s and 50s! I especially signs like the one shown above! That shoe is perfection!

Like the main Neon Museum, you need to make an appointment/tour to tour the graveyard.

Getting to Know Las Vegas-Tips and Advice for First-Time Vegas Visitors

Most of us vintage bloggers are aware that the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender is coming up fast. This year's event starts on April 21st and ends on the 24th. Many of us, Viva first-timers or not, visited Las Vegas before. However, if this is your first Viva event and/or you have never been to Las Vegas, I have some tips for you that can help make your trip even better!

As a former travel agent who spent over 10 years in the industry and as a gal who has been to Vegas before, I would like to do a post detailing some information about getting around, walking, traffic, using the Monorail, shopping, food, and entertainment.

So, without further ado, here we go!

1. Las Vegas is a party town. It was created for gambling and entertainment back in the 40s. People visit Vegas all year round in search of good times, playing casino games, shopping, dining, and well, to party.

2. Vegas is pretty much non-stop 24 hours. Casinos are always open. Most restaurants have set hours but they stay open late. Bars and nightclubs are open into the wee hours. The malls, like Caesars Forum Shops and the Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian, are open to 11 pm and on Friday and Saturday night, until midnight.

3. Gambling is everywhere! You will find slot machines at the McCarran Airport and even the local gas stations! Casinos in all major hotels are open 24 hours. There is smoking allowed on the casino floor but most places restrict smoking to these areas.

4. If you plan to walk the Strip in Vegas, please use the overhead walking bridges and use only designated crosswalks. Also be sure to bring good walking shoes if you are feeling adventurous. You can also use the Las Vegas Monorail System. The Monorail costs $5.00 USD for a one-way trip, $14.00 for an unlimited all day pass, and $30.00 for an unlimited three day pass.

For some reason, there seems to be a lot of pedestrian vs car accidents here. I have been there four times and twice I saw the aftermath of someone bumped by a car. Thankfully, the pedestrian was not seriously hurt. I suspect the combination of tons of people on the Strip and constant vehicle traffic is part of the problem. I also think a few pedestrians are not paying attention because they have been consuming alcohol.

Alcohol brings me to topic #5: Las Vegas allows pedestrians to openly carry alcohol. For example, say you just got a Miller Lite at Nine Fine Irishmen Pub at New York New York Casino and want to check out Tabu at the MGM Grand. But, wait! I have not finished my beer! That's okay, bring it with you! As long as you are not driving, you can openly carry alcohol.

6. The "Girls to You" guys. Las Vegas, being the entertainment capital, is also known for its adult entertainment and escort services. If you walk down certain sections of the Strip, you will often see guys flipping business cards featuring nude/semi-nude women and a phone number. These are the escort girls. The guys shout, "GIRLS TO YOU!" as hand the cards out to men walking down the strip. There are usually tons of nudie cards scattered on the ground due to people tossing them aside once the cards are handed to them. You may also see the "Girls To You" mini billboard on a truck stuck in traffic on the Strip. I am only mentioning this if you are sensitive to these type of things.

7. Speaking of adult entertainment, Las Vegas also features scores of exotic dancing establisments (Spearmint Rhino), topless revues (Crazy Girls), sexual-themed shows like Zumanity and Peepshow), and even shows featuring hunky male dancers (Thunder from Down Under and Men of Sapphire). Vegas still offers the traditional showgirl revues at Bally's ( The Show is called "Jubilee!" and they have both clothed and topless showings)

8. Many casinos have shows ranging from comedy, concerts, musicals, magic acts, and impressionists. Check your casino's website for tickets and showtimes.

9. Speaking of casinos, the hotel and casino is literally a world within itself. Many casinos boast several fine and casual dining options, bars, nightclubs, shopping, gambling, high stakes gambling rooms, convention rooms for conferences, entertainment venues, gyms, pools, and even full salon and spa services. Talk about everything in one place!

Now, if you like to workout when you go on vacation (like me), be aware that you just can't 'waltz in' and use the weights and treadmill like most hotels. In Las Vegas, most of the casinos charge guests a 'per day fee' to use their gym. The average fee is about 25.00 to 30.00 USD. Now, if you are a high-stakes gamer and a VIP, you use the gym for free.

10. Shopping. Now we're talkin'! I love me some shoppin' for sure! I like visiting the Fashion Show Mall, the Caesars Forum Shops, and the Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian. As I mentioned earlier, most malls are open to 11 pm Monday-Thursday and Sunday. They are open to 12 midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. I, for one, love going to the Sephora at the Venetian! It is HUUUUGE! I am in makeup heaven! This store is bigger than their flagship location in New York City! I find brands there that my local Sephora does not carry. I also love visiting the MAC Cosmetics Pro Store at the Caesars. This store features MAC's retail collection along with its professional line. Anyone can shop at at Pro store but only Pro members can shop online so if you ever have a chance to visit a MAC Pro store, go!

Las Vegas is also the home of Bettie Page Clothing! The store was at the Planet Hollywood but is going to open at the Caesar Shops in March 2011. Bettie Page Clothing makes cute repro dresses and separates. I know many gals prefer vintage, but I, for one, like the occasional repro piece (especially swimwear).

Because Vegas is a high roller town, you are going to find high-end stores like Chanel, Agent Provocateur, Gucci, Burberry, Bulgari, Tods, Armani, Louis Vuitton, Neiman Marcus, and Saks. You can also find Forever 21, Gap, and Bebe. So, if you are a 'rolling in the dough' diva or a 'regular jane,' Vegas' shopping has it.

11. FOOOOOD! I love food. I mean, I LOVE food. If it weren't weren't for the shopping and nightlife, I would go to Las Vegas just for the food! Whether it's haute cuisine at Nine, Jean Georges Steakhouse, or Aureole or chain fare like McDonalds and Maggiano's Little Italy, again, Las Vegas has it! You can even find cafes and diners in many casinos are that open 24 hours. Other than an oversalted alfredo at the Tropicana in 2003, I have never had a bad meal in Vegas. All of the casinos' restaurants are in competition with each other so the chefs are going to put on their best to 'wow' your tastebuds.

12. Crime. Like most places on the planet, Las Vegas has crime. Be careful. Keep valuables in your hotel room safe, stay in the public areas, and do not over consume alcohol to the point you are posing a risk to yourself. In addition, do not be surprised if you occasionally have transients come up to you asking for money. Yes, Las Vegas is bright, shiny, pretty, fun, and lively, but it is still a real city. It may seem like Disneyworld but just be aware of your surroundings, especially at night and especially if you walk the Strip.

13. Heat. Las Vegas is a desert city and if you ever visit the city in the heat of the summer, be prepared for hot temperatures! The average temperature in July and August can go over 100 F! Make sure you drink lots of water, stay in the shade, and if you are sun-sensitive like me, brings lots of sunblock.

However, the temperatures in March and April can vary. I was in Vegas in March 2010 and I was surprised how cold it was! During the day, the temperature was about 60 degrees the week I was there and it was misty and rainy until the day we left. During the evening, the temperature was in thh 40s and I needed a coat.

I did some research regarding the average temperatures for April and it seems Viva days can be in the 70s or cooler. It does get colder at night so be sure to bring a light coat or wrap. I am going to pack a cardigan or two for the daytime and a light wool coat for night. It is always good to have the bases covered when it comes to weather. Moreover, if the forecast calls for rain, be sure to pack a small, compact umbrella in your suitcase! What a shame it would be to get your victory rolls wet!

So, for all you first-timer visitors to Vegas, I hope this post was helpful. Also, to those who know Las Vegas well or those who are Vegas locals, let me know if I missed something.

Need Help With My Viva Wardrobe!

After purchasing my tickets for Viva Las Vegas 14, I did an inventory of my closet and I realized that I have plenty of options for day wear but when it comes to Hawaiian/Tiki wear and evening dancing attire, I fall a bit short!

I have a nice array of vintage cocktail attire but I do not have anything that classifies as "super wow factor." I saw this dress on Etsy the other day but the price is a bit "ouch" (ie $185.00 USD):

Kim Bomshell warned me that Etsy prices would be going up as Viva approaches and holy guacamole, she was right! I have seen many pretty dresses listed and their prices are steepsville! I also notice that several listings now have "VLV" in the title. Hmmm, cashing in on the rush, eh? Interesting..... I have my 36th birthday coming up so maybe the husband will get me something special for the dance floor!

I recently found Whirling Turban dresses and I am in love! I am floored with their styles and fabrics:

Along with evening wear and tiki wear, I think I need another bathing suit. I have one vintage repro suit by Esther Williams. I had two amazing 50s suits but I left them in my cabin during a recent cruise! Rats!!! Nevertheless, I would like to buy a vintage suit in a Hawaiian or tiki print. I found a lovely Shaheen suit on Etsy but it was $125.00USD!

So, I have a question for you gals who have been to Viva, am I worrying too much about having the 'right' attire, or should I just be content to grab what I have from my closet? I want to look good but I do not want to be obsessed about it! Viva is about fun, right?

Also, due to the airline restrictions, I think I need to keep a level head about what I pack. Nevertheless, what do you gals think?

RIP Jane Russell (1921-2011)

On the 28th of February, 2011, Hollywood starlet Jane Russell died at the age of 89. Jane was famous for her beautiful pin up style and acting in roles in films such as "The Outlaw" (1943), "His Kind of Woman" (1951), and "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (1953).

I am sad Jane is gone but I know she lives on in every vintage-loving gal and in every movie she was in. Rest in Peace, beautiful lady.

Got My Tickets for Viva 14!

New Running Shoes and Two Atomic Paintings!

I am sorry I have not posted anything in over a week! I have been feeling a bit lazy for some reason. I think it is the weather. It has been cool one day and then somewhat warm the next. Within a two week time frame, there has been rain, wind, sunshine, and even a bit of snow! I, for one, want a major snow event but I think it's not going to happen. March start tomorrow and before we know it, spring will be here.

Nevertheless, I have lots of new ideas for blog topics. I am going to post about vintage repro shapewear and how to do a proper 40s lip. I am also going to talk about my latest sewing adventures. Let me tell you, what a saga that has been!

So, without further ado, I have been painting again. I went to art school and studied Spanish. From makeup, painting to pottery, I love all things art. In the process of decorating my home, I have also been creating a couple of Atomic-era pieces.

Along with being affected by the weather and painting, I have been running way more! During the dregs of winter, I found myself making excuses not to run/workout. I recently decided 'enough was enough' and now I am back to my 5 days a week/5 miles per run.

In addition, I have been putting off buying new running shoes. The 'cardinal rule' of running shoes is to replace them every 500 miles or every 6 months! I have been so bad! I have not replaced my shoes since August! During my Friday morning run, my left knee began to felt irritated. I realized it was time to buy a new pair. I have found running bliss in Saucony's Pro Guide 2, which is now the 3:

I was so happy to find these shoes on Zappos.com on sale for $76.00USD! I am especially pleased to find these in pink! My previous pair only came in gray/white, green/white, and blue/white. I had the blue/white. I am a sucker for all things pink and I cannot wait for these to arrive!

Outfit Post- Light Cotton Dress on a Warm Day in February

Even though it is February, the current temperature today in the DC area is 74 degrees! One of our local meteorologists, Doug Hill of ABC7 News, stated that we could possibly break temperature records! I was hoping for more snow despite the fact everyone else is pining to spend the day outside! Oh well. Maybe a huge blizzard will come next month. It is still winter afterall.

Nevertheless, due to the spring-like weather, today I am wearing the new 1950s brown plaid cotton dress I bought off Etsy earlier this week. I paid 32.00 USD. The fabric is light and the plaid is a mix of warm red, slate blue, and grayish khaki green.

Here I am this morning before leaving the house. The sun wasn't even up yet. I had to take care of my mother-in-laws cats before my early morning meetings.

Since the dress was missing its original belt, I put on a red one. To further enhance the red tones in my dress, I wore my 40s red carved bakelite earrings along with my slowly expanding bakelite bangle collection:

I adore the collar on this dress but it needed a little extra sparkle so I put on a vintage brooch my mother-in-law gave me a few years ago:

After taking these pictures, I realized my 40s vintage brown and white saddle shoes were somewhat 'ho-hum,' so I quickly changed my shoes to my red suede wedges:

So, even though it is not a winter wonderland, I admit that I am enjoying wearing lighter fabric and no stockings! Heck, I may even go outside with my sketch book when I get home!

Next Tuesday, the weather forecasts are calling for temperatures to be in the 30s again. No snow is coming but again, it is still winter! A girl can still hope!

Julie Hewett Lipstick in "Femme Noir"

During my latest search for the 'perfect' vintage red, I recently discovered a fabulous lipstick brand; Julie Hewett Los Angeles.

Julie Hewett was the lead makeup artist for the 2001 film "Pearl Harbor." During production, Ms. Hewett realized the modern lipsticks in her collection were not up to par for creating the period-correct look on the actresses. Faced with frustration, Julie decided to make her own lipsticks and thus, Julie Hewett Los Angeles was born.

Julie's line of lipsticks includes sheer and full color shades. The full colors, i.e. the Noir Lipsticks, boast rich, vibrant pigments paired with a semi-matte texture. The colors range from coral, neutral bright red, bright blue red, brick red to succulent eggplant. When I was visiting my hometown of Richmond, Virginia two weeks ago, I went to Carytown to browse the vintage wares at Bygones. As I was walking down Cary Street, I spotted Le Visage Makeup Boutique and I decided to check it out. Le Visage is a small speciality shop that carries a nice selection of relatively unknown brands, including Julie Hewett! I was so excited to finally see the lipsticks in person! As many girls know, there is nothing better than swatching lipsticks firsthand. Online swatches do not compare!

I swatched a few shades including Femme Noir and Rouge Noir. Rouge Noir, a neutral bright red that leans slightly warm, really caught my attention but it was sold out. I also swatched Femme Noir, a bright red with a hint of a blue/pink base. I liked this color and thankfully, it was in stock.

This is a swatch of Femme Noir on the back of my hand. The color is a bright true red with a pink base.

This is me, before hitting the gym this morning, wearing Femme Noir. The lipstick feels really creamy on and lasts about 4 hours before I need to touch up. The color does not bleed and it has a good balance of slip and grip. Moreover, MAC's lip liner in Cherry pairs amazingly well with Femme Noir.

Here is Misty, helping me take pictures this morning. Eventually, she was getting annoyed and then insisted that I put the camera phone down so we could go downstairs and start breakfast.

Having Fun With The Film Noir Look

As an amateur makeup artist, I like to experiment with different vintage looks. For my normal day to day look, I simply do nude shadows on eyes and place color emphasis on cheeks, brows, lashes, and lips.

I have loved film noir for years. I love "Double Indemnity" (1944) featuring Barbara Stanwyck as Phyllis, a housewife involved in a murder-for-hire scheme!

Today I decided to try out a femme fatale look. I did a thick cat wing eye liner effect on my eyes and I overlined my lips to make them look more bold. I then put on a 1950s vintage black velvet hat with net, a black dress, and a faux leopard and black knit bolero from Heartbreaker fashion.

I know the last picture is a bit much! My black dress has a low, fitted bodice that has a merrywidow look. I only wear it with a cardigan or jacket when I go out to a club! I am too chicken to wear it on its own!

After my pictures, I washed my face and changed into my workout clothes so I could do my morning run. Back to reality!

Atomic Era Cat Painting Inspired by Straight Talking Mama's Broken Cat Vase

Recently, the lovely Fiona from Straight Talking Mama blog, did a post detailing the heartbreak she felt when her 60 year old cat vase (as pictured above) broke when a huge wind caused it to crash to the floor.

When I read her story, I felt her loss. What a shame to lose such a precious mid-century piece! I hope Fiona can find another cat vase just like the one she had.

Because I am a "crazy cat lady" and an avid vintage enthusiast, I decided to tap into my creativity and do a painting inspired by Fiona's broken kitty vase. I used acrylic colors of espresso, white, and pink.

I also added two starbursts and applied a thin layer of pink glitter over the pink swirls:

I like the way the painting turned out but I hope Fiona does not mind I basically did a copy of her cat! I guess since the cat is broken and not able to be fixed, I hope my finished piece can properly honor its memory!

More Vintage Home Updates-Atomic Bathroom Flair!

This weekend, I got my new vintage cat eye glasses and I went to Target. I know, very exciting. What a wild weekend, huh?

Despite my ho-hum activities, I managed to update my two upstairs bathrooms with some new vintage flair! At Target I bought a set of pink guest towels, a pink bath mat, a new shower curtain, and a set of aqua blue shower hooks for the master bath. The former shower curtain was a boring, celery green affair that had out-stayed its welcome!

Let's start with the master bath. Here is the new curtain:

I love it! It has an atomic, yet almost mod look. Even though the print is quite abstract, there is also an organic feel to it.

A few years ago, I repainted the walls in my guest bath with a standard, white satin and then added gold floral stencils. Each stencil was hand-painted. Let me tell you, despite the small size of the bathroom, stencilling took forever! Nevertheless, the finished result was worth the effort!

Even though my guest bath looked nice, there was something missing. I had a set of plain cream towels and a espresso-colored bath mat. The whole thing was just 'meh.' Then I had an idea to give my guest bath a little bit of fun: pink. Pink is so classic 50s vintage so I was 'tickled pink' (ha ha) when I spotted the set of towels and bath accessories in my envisioned pink.

I bought two hand towels and two fingertip towels along with a small mat. I recently purchased a yard of 50s cotton fabric printed with diamonds and black starbursts. I first washed the fabric and the towels and then I sewed fabric onto the towels for an extra bit of atomic fun:

See the rug? Love it! I am going back to Target to buy two full size towels and I will sew the fabric I have left onto each one.

I noticed the top of the white bookshelf I have in my foyer hall looked empty and plain so I made a small runner:

The pink starburst platter was found on Etsy last summer. It is from the 50s and was made by California Originals. This platter was on my living room table but I moved it to my bookshelf. The pink of the fabric just pairs so nicely!

My next project is to re-do my basement. It needs a major facelift! I would love to turn it into a tiki bar complete with boomerang tables!

"New" Cat Eye Glasses!

Last week, I bought these 50s, clear acetate and light gold cat eye frames on Etsy. They are in amazing condition and look unworn! I paid 58.00 USD and with shipping, the total came to be just over 63.00 USD! I love the gold accents:

I received my glasses on Saturday and that afternoon, I took my new frames to my local optician and had them fitted with my prescription. One of the lab technicians, who happens to collect Victorian-era accessories and furniture, always ensures that my vintage frames are well taken care of!

In the past, other technicians and opticians have been reluctant to work on vintage eyewear because they are afraid the frames will snap/break when heated. So, I am truly lucky to have found a place where people understand the nature of vintage metal and plastics!

New Atomic Goodies for the House!

I have been off radar for a little while and as a result, I have not been keeping up with my blog duties! Despite my apparent 'blog laziness,' I have been busy updating my house with new atomic housewares! As a result, my glue gun and sewing machine have been busy too!

After searching Etsy for new addition to my slowly expanding vintage housewares collection, I realized the things I wanted were either very expensive or the shipping was too high. I spotted several pairs of amazing lamps, a ton of ceramic vases and platters, and a bounty of starburst-adorned collectibles. I wanted so many things but I decided to search my local Target and Home Goods store for atomic-inspired lovelies. My local Target left me wanting and empty-handed. But, Home Goods proved to be a wonderful place for my vintage needs. I ended up buying about 120.00 USD worth of goodies!

I would like to share with you all what I got and what I also made:

I found this starburst mirror at Home Goods for 39.99 USD! I almost missed it too! As I was checking out with my initial purchases, I spotted a couple buying the same mirror! I thought to myself, "Where was THAT hiding?! I have to have it!" I bought my stuff, got my receipt, put my bags in my car, and ran back into the store to search for this mirror. Let me tell you, I really had to look hard to find it. It was in a stack amongst different styles! I grabbed the mirror and I did not see any others. I think I got the last one.

I found this teapot also at Home Goods. I love the aqua color! It matches the aqua already present in my kitchen! I paid 24.00 USD.

This red vase on the left is a ceramic glaze. It matches my atomic pillows and curtains wonderfully! The vase has a small crack on it but I hid it by simply turning the flawed area towards the back of my mantle. I got this for 10.00 USD.

This aqua strainer is a coated metal and it has a nice weight to it. I paid only $4.99 USD! Like my new teapot, it matches my kitchen nicely!

I found this lamp also at Home Goods! It was 29.00 USD. I love the wavy green ceramic base! The lamp shade has a very 50s look and texture!

I also purchased a 4-pack of white and aqua tea towels for 2.99 USD. I decorated two of them with a teal blue and yellow dot starburst fabric (the same as my kitchen curtains). I also added yellow grosgrain ribbon.

Along with my new houseware buys, I made two more pillows for my living room using the same atomic repro print fabric I bought last summer on Etsy. I used up all of the first batch of fabric and as a result, I got some more last week. Here are the new pillows:

I have been having fun adding more vintage style to my home! I wish I could learn to make boomerang tables and I would be set!

I already own a Classic Color Lipstick in Besame Red (a bright neutral that leans slightly warm). I have several bright-toned reds from various brands and lately I realized I wanted a more deep red. After viewing several swatches of Besame shades online, I narrowed my choice down to Red Velvet.

Red Velvet is a darker red that reminds me of MAC Russian Red combined with MAC's Viva Glam I. The color is not cool or warm and it seems to have a touch of garnet in it. When I compare Red Velvet to Besame Red, Red Velvet is more subdued yet still dramatic. Basically Besame Red = bright fire engine, candy apple red and Red Velvet = the darker red tone of red velvet cake. Thus, the name "Red Velvet" is fitting.

I really like this lipstick because it is different from all the other lipsticks I wear and I adore the garnet hue. I paired MAC lip pencil in Brick with this and it matches perfectly.

Review of Besame Cosmetic's Signature Compact

Upon my return home yesterday afternoon, I noticed UPS left a package on my front porch. It was my Besame Cosmetics order! In this shipment, I received Besame's Signature Compact and a Classic Color Lipstick in Red Velvet.

I have been a huge fan of Besame lipstick but until today, I was not familiar with their famous Cashmere Powder compact. I had been wanting to try out the powder for a while but I was hesitant due to several reviews lamenting the compact's size. One reviewer stated the compact was meant for a doll, not a human being!

Nevertheless, I wanted a vintage-looking and pretty compact for my handbag. I love my MAC Blot Powder but the boring, black plastic compact is, well, boring. I have a vintage 1940s compact that belonged to my husband's bubbe which I usually fill with coty loose powder and rubbing alcohol. Recently, the 'bubbe' compact's clasp has started to loosen and as a result, it won't close properly. Since I prefer vintage, I decided to '"bite the bullet" and buy a Cashmere Compact. It retails for $38.00 USD. Compact refills are $15.00 USD.

After opening the light yellow box above, I pulled out this:

I opened the bag and pulled out a small, yet heavy-feeling compact:

I love the floral details! So feminine and classic! Now this is the compact opened. The shade I ordered is the lightest available, Porcelain:

The refill is magnetized so when you run out of powder, simply insert a tiny screwdriver (like the ones used to repair eyeglasses) or needle into the round notch on the edge of the powder pan and pop it out:

As for the size of the compact itself, here is how it compares to a standard compact (in this case one from MAC):

When comparing the amount of product Besame gives you to the amount found in MAC, it is obvious that you do get less. So, despite it's "doll size," is Besame Cashmere Powder worth spending $38.00 bucks?

For one, Besame touts this powder as a powder foundation. When I compared the powder opacity to MAC Blot powder, the Cashmere had more coverage while the MAC powder was more like a thin, chalky veil. However, when I compared Dior's Diorskin Forever Compact Foundation to Besame, the Dior was more opaque. Basically, MAC Blot powder is intended to a powder that blots off shine throughout the day. It is just too weak in consistency to be a proper foundation.

The Cashmere Compact is a primarily a sheer coverage foundation. If your skin has flaws or imperfections, this powder is not going to be a good choice because it will not provide enough coverage. So, what is this powder for?

I have been experimenting with it and what I have discovered is that if you use blotting papers and a powder puff, this powder is great for touch ups. The tiny foam puff the powder comes with is pretty useless. It is too small and after a few uses, it seems dirty and worn out. I threw mine out.

Throughout the day, my skin gets very shiny. I blot oil with a couple of blot sheets from Clean and Clear and then using a puff, I lightly apply a small amount of Cashmere powder to my forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin. If you use this powder without blotting, its thicker consistency will make your skin look cakey and heavy. You need to blot first with oil sheets!

Also, if you want a more sheer coverage, simply apply tinted moisturizer and using a larger puff, apply a light dusting of Cashmere powder to set. Moreover, if you are blessed with tiny pores and flawless skin, this powder as a foundation alone with work for you.

In addition to this powder's different uses, the vintage look makes it worth its price. It looks so pretty on a vanity table and it is perfect for nights out. Imagine pulling that gorgeous compact out of your gold clutch!

I like the fact this compact is re-fillable. The MAC Blot powder is 23.00 USD. When I run out of product, I need to spend another 23.00 dollars. Like I stated before, the Besame compact refill costs 15.00 USD. I also think the dense-quality of the powder and the fact the pan is small will help me reduce my need to touch up my makeup!

So, if you are if you are looking for an authentic-looking vintage compact along with good-quality powder that has a myriad of uses, then give Besame Cashmere Powder a try!

Misty and the Lion Cut

This is my cat lounging a sunbeam on my carpet. She was talking (meowing) when my husband took this picture. Nevertheless, like all persian cats, Misty has a thick, cotton-like coat of long, dense fur that requires daily brushing. Due to the heaviness and texture of persians' fur, it is prone to getting severely matted. I am able to groom my cat daily but she gets fussy when I try to brush her belly, chest, and back legs. And it is these areas that get matted the most!

Realizing that my cat was becoming a tangled mess, I decided to call our vet to make an appointment for a "lion cut." The lion cut is when the vet and/or groomer shaves the cat down to the skin but they leave the lower part of the legs, the lower section of the tail, and entire face intact. The length of the trimmed hair is like that of a buzz cut.

After employing a few CIA-like tactics to get Misty in her carrier yesterday morning, I drove a very annoyed cat to the vet. I dropped Misty off around 9 am and then went to work. Later yesterday afternoon, the vet's office called me to let me know Misty was ready to go home and this is my baby, apres-lion cut!

Isn't she just too cute?! Her little body feels like soft peach fuzz!

I have had family and friends ask me if Misty gets cold, especially in winter, after her haircut. Yes, she can get cold but we leave blankets for her all over the couches and she cuddles in them right away. She also hangs out on top of my husband's computer monitor in his home office. It is very warm. Misty also cuddles under the blankets with us when we go to bed.

(Yes, that is Misty and the man sleeping! I just couldn't resist!)

I feel bad that Misty had her lion cut in winter but she couldn't continue with all those matts in her fur! Despite her close-cropped 'do, I know she is happy to have all those matts gone!

A Snow Day in DC

This is a view of my street yesterday afternoon. The snow was really coming down and I was in winter wonderland heaven! The wee morning hours brought snow which turned to rain as the morning progressed. But around 1 pm, the rain turned to sleet and by 3 pm, the temperature dropped and snow began falling. I drove to Michaels Crafts in my father-in-law's truck while it was sleeting and I spotted several spun-out cars on Interstate 66. Most commuters were driving slow, marred in a state of panic. I quickly bought a few art supplies and drove home before the traffic and/or chaos got worse.

The DC area is first in the nation (tied with Chicago) for worst traffic. Combine the intense gridlock with a wintery mix bag of precipitation and you get absolute pandemonium! My husband, who normally has an hour + drive home, was stuck in traffic for three hours!

This is the back deck last night:

I was so happy to wake up this morning and see my neighborhood coated in snow! I estimate the area got about 7+ inches! I just wish we lived in the mountains because I would be skiing in heartbeat!

Today, I worked from home and I started a painting. I am doing an atomic/abstract piece that will go in my foyer. I also ran some errands and went to the post office. Due to the icy and slushy conditions, I wore my old pair of combat boots, tights, a black Cure Tee, and a pink cardigan. I also styled my hair differently.

I normally do a middle or left part in my hair but today I did a right side part. I think I like it! My blond highlights can really be seen:

Awesome Bobby Pin Find at Sally Beauty! Mini Bobby Pins!

Many of us who do vintage hairstyles often know that bobby pins (or kirby grips) are a MUST! Bobby pins are vital for pin curls, securing victory rolls, and rolling back those Bettie bangs (pompadour) on days we want a different look.

For years, I bought standard bobby pins (Goody) at the grocery store or pharmacy. These types are good for most styles but after a while, "run-of-the-mill' pins tend to snag hair or stretch out after several uses. I usually throw stretched pins out and grab a new one but again, it would stretch out and the little rubber tips on the end pop off and snag/pull my hair. In addition, my hair is very fine and standard pins have a tendency to slide out of my hair. Also, when it comes to doing rolls and pompadours, most bobby pins tend to stick out (especially when I roll back my bangs) due to the lack of volume.

While I was in Sally Beauty yesterday buying a few things, I spotted a section of bobby pins. There were large sizes, standard sizes, and mini sizes, as seen above. I have never used mini pins and the price, $2.49 for a 36-count tin, made me to want to try them.

The MetaGrip Mini Bob Pins' description states that the pins are tighter and snag-free. Well, today I styled my hair in rolls and not only do these mini bobby pins hide nicely, they really grip my hair amazingly well! I feel like a gale force wind couldn't even ruin my 'do!

The Most Amazing Blond/Highlight Shampoo Ever! Clairol Shimmer Lights!

Now that I have my beloved blond highlights back, I want to share with you all one of the best highlighting shampoos ever created: Clairol Shimmer Lights Shampoo in "Blonde/Silver!" This "holy grail" shampoo has been a mainstay in my hair care arsenal since 2008. You can find this shampoo at Sally Beauty Supply stores, online at Sally Beauty's website, www.haircareusa.com, and www.ballbeauty.com. I know other places/sites should have it on stock as well. I buy the 16 ounce bottle at Sally Beauty for $8.49 USD. The shampoo also comes in a 4 ounce bottle as well as a 32 ounce size.

This Clairol Shampoo is intended for natural and highlighted blondes who want bright, platinum tones instead of yellow. The violet color cancels out any brassiness. Right now, I have quite a bit of yellow/warmth in the lower half of my hair. Over the next couple of salon visits, these tones will be bleached out. I would love to have my hair all platinum now but doing so would be very damaging! It is best to process hair slowly. Due to the presence of these yellowy sections, I use this shampoo to brighten the platinum tones and to help fade the warmth in my blond.

In fall 2008, my stylist, Corry, colored my hair black with platinum blond on top:
After my color was done, I used Pureology Hydrate Shampoo as well as Pantene's blonde shampoo. I washed my hair with the Pantene a few times a week to help brighten/maintain my blond but its results were lackluster. Moreover, the shampoo began to dry out my hair! I needed something that would help brighten as well as condition.

When I was in Aspen, Colorado for a 5 week business trip in November 2008, I visited Carl's Pharmacy with the hopes of finding a better replacement for the Pantene shampoo. As I browsed the shelves in the hair care section, I stumbled upon "Clairol Shimmer Lights Blond and Silver Shampoo." I bought a 16 ounce bottle for 11.00 USD (gotta love that resort ski town mark-up!).

After my gym workout the next day, I washed my hair with my new shampoo. The shampoo was a super bright violet pearl shimmer that had a light, pleasant clean-scented fragrance. It had a creamy, thick lather too. I rinsed my hair, applied conditioner, and rinsed in cool water.

As I towel-dried my hair, I could already see that my hair looked more platinum. I really noticed the difference when I blow-dried my hair! Wow! Most of the remaining yellow tones were pretty much gone!

Yesterday, I used the Shimmer Lights once again and I today notice that my blond looks brighter. The yellow tones are still there but they are not as glaring. My hair also feels soft too!

Today's Hair and Outfit

Today, I have my hair in rolls again and instead of leaving the back section down, I rolled it into a roll using a hair comb (my hair is kind of dirty due to my overuse of heat spray yesterday):

I am wearing a rust-colored scoop neck, pointelle-knit sweater from Anthropologie that I bought in 2006. My necklace is a resin piece made my me. My earrings are vintage repro that I bought in 2005 for only 10.00 USD. I am also wearing a 50s plaid wool pencil skirt, black tights, and my new TUK kitty shoes.

On my right arm, I am wearing my slowly-expanding bakelite bangle collection:

A Cold and Lazy Saturday

This morning, I left the house at 8:45 am for my 9:00 am hair appointment. Despite my warm coat and gloves, I was absolutely freezing as I drove to the salon! It was so cold that I could actually see my breath and I could barely feel my feet! My car heater wasn't even kicking in! The temperature reading on my car dash read 19 degrees!

After my bone-chilling, 10-minute drive in the car, I arrived at the salon and I was happy to be inside again! During this appointment, Corry, my stylist of almost 4 years, refreshed my warm red color, trimmed my Middy, and added some amazing blond highlights as well! I had a blond chunk in my bangs colored over with a cool red tone back in September and I realized that I missed them around New Year's. So, without further ado, here me wearing my new 49er jacket with my new hair color(s):

My blond is currently a pale shade with slight yellow tones. On my next appointment, Corry will lighten the blond again and eventually the blond will be platinum. It is always best to lighten hair gently and not process it too much at once! Hair can become damaged and even break off if the process is too intense!

After my appointment, I met my friend, Selina, at the mall and we shopped at MAC (I bought a new blot powder and a foundation brush) and then we talked over coffee from Starbucks. It was so great to finally hang out with her! Our schedules have been super busy!

I went home after an hour or so and had lunch with the husband. He recently injured his achilles heel and is now wearing an aircast so we have just been taking it easy and not going out much. I do not mind. Besides, it was too cold to be out today! The high temperature here in the DC area only got to be 27 degrees!

After lunch, the husband and I made a fire and watched old MST3K episodes.

Before I knew it, it was time for dinner. Hmmmmm. What to make? Forget about cooking! I am too lazy today! The solution? Sushi takeout by the fire!

The food was so good, even Misty, my 14 year-old persian, came over to get her share:

Misty was actually looking into the camera but at the last second, she turned her head! I wish my camera could have captured Misty's cute, begging face! She has the "starving kitty stare" mastered completely!

Now that Saturday is coming to a close, I have to say it was a good day. I hope you all have a lovely weekend. And if you are somewhere cold, stay warm!

Betty's Vintage Musings is Now "The DC Metro Retro"

So, after much consideration, I have decided to change blog from "Betty's Vintage Musings" to "The DC Metro Retro." In addition, I am dropping the moniker "Lady Betty" for my name, "Tara."

"Lady Betty" was my pin-up name that I used for photography work, and since I have not done any projects since 2008, going by my real name seems more appropriate nowadays.

As for my new blog title, I think it's a great way to have fun with the fact that I seem to be one of the few vintage people in the DC area! Like I have mentioned many times before, there is no rockabilly/vintage community. I am sure there a are a 'token few' rockabilly folks here and there but as a whole, DC lacks an established scene. There are no events, no shows, and there are definitely no neato-keen weekenders! In a land of political action committees, lobbyists, government employees, senate staffers, and federal contractors; the J. Crew-clad locals shop at the mall, go out to eat, grab a drink, and commute in traffic. Oh, what I would do to be able to meet someone who lives and breathes the vintage life!

In conclusion, I hope you all will enjoy the changes here on my blog. Instead of lamenting the fact I "stick out like a sore thumb," I am going to start enjoying being a vintage gal surviving life inside the Beltway!

Etsy Haul! A new coat, a bag, and a 49er jacket!

Despite my desire to save money (my annual two-week Colorado ski trip and Viva are coming up), I still find myself buying vintage wares! Recently, I purchased a new coat, a black suede handbag, a plaid 49er jacket, and a black angora turtleneck.

The gray wool Banana Republic coat that I wear daily has started to come apart. I bought it in October 2005. The lining is torn on the pleat, it's missing a button, and the belt that adorns the back is now falling off. Despite the its flaws, I am amazed this coat has served me well for over 5 years! Due to my coat's demise, I decided to look for a replacement and last week I found this lovely, taupe colored, wool-alpaca blend,1950s deadstock Rothmoore coat for under $60.00 USD:

As my turtleneck situation, one of my most-worn pieces is a black merino blend Forever 21 sweater that has become a pilled mess! I bought it last winter for 17.00 USD. Forever 21 merchandise is not known for its longevity! Forever 21 is famous for being cute, trendy, and cheap! Nevertheless, I wore that turtleneck with wide leg pants, rolled jeans, and skirts. Because a black turtleneck pairs well with so many things, I got this one:

As for the plaid 49er jacket, I have been wanting one for a long time! It is so perfect to wear with a turtleneck and rolled jeans on the weekends! It is a must have for casual wear! I got this 1950s, red plaid jacket for under 20.00 USD!

I needed a new black handbag and I think a girl can never have too many accessories! I bought this 50s, black suede beauty for 22.00 USD!

I am pleased with my purchases and I glad I did not "break the bank!" The next 'must-have' I have my eye on is a 50s party dress! I need to update my fancy attire collection!

Receiving Defective Merchandise! TUK Kitty Shoe Letdown

For about three years, I have wanted a pair of TUK "kitty face" mary janes. I love the kitty face on the front! There is even a black kitty tail on the back of the heel! How cute is that?! As a rockabilly "crazy cat lady" and TUK fan, I thought these shoes would just be perfect with either rolled jeans or red pencil skirt paired with a black turtleneck and a 50s plaid 49er jacket.

Earlier this week, I finally went on Endless.com and ordered a pair of kitty shoes! They were only 38.00 USD and they were available in my size 7! Well, today I received my shoes and as I excitedly opened the box, I noticed one of the straps looked a bit weird. Upon closer inspection, I saw that the back of the strap was totally cracked!

I am so disappointed! I mean, just look at that strap! These shoes have never been worn and yet this strap looks decrepit! I feel like if I try to buckle it, it could snap in half! I examined the other strap and it looks great. Talk about frustrating!

Despite my huge shoe letdown, I am thankful Endless.com has a great return policy and free returns. I also like how you can go to their site and print out a UPS label and simply tape it to your return and drop it off at your local UPS facility.

Since these shoes were defective, I hope Endless can replace them. If not, I just want my money back!

It's Giveaway Time Again! Resin Pendant Duo!

I cannot believe I have over 150 followers now! Thank you to everyone who reads my little blog! I have been blogging since May 2010 and I have to say that I am having the most fun meeting other vintage-enthusiasts, reading your blogs, sharing comments, and learning more about living the vintage life! So, in honor of you all and in celebration of 150+ followers, I am doing another giveaway! This giveaway features two handmade, poured resin pendants made by me! I started making resin jewelry over a year ago and I enjoy it a lot!

The first pendant is a small rectangle (just under two inches long by 1.5 inches wide by 1/4 inch thick ). It is infused with white, opalescent glitter and two shimmery atomic starburst decals :

Hair Product Spotlight-Organix Moroccan Argan Oil Renewing Treatment Conditioner

Some of you may know that I am a hair color addict. I have been red, platinum blond, black, pink, purple, brunette and back again. Also, the product was only $7.99 USD and I had a 20% coupon. I thought the price was great and if the conditioner did not live up to its promises, I would only be out a few bucks.

Well, let me tell you, the only thing I lost was damaged hair! I love this stuff and it has become a MUST in my hair care regime. Here is how I use it:

Once a week, after shampooing with Tigi's Superstar Sulfate-Free shampoo, I apply a walnut-size amount of the treatment to my hair and gently comb through. I put on a clear, plastic shower cap and finish my shower. I let the conditioner penetrate my hair for about 5-7 minutes as I brush my teeth and apply my body lotion. I then take off the cap and rinse my hair with cool water. My hair feels so smooth and soft! After I blow dry, my dry hair is amazingly shiny! The last time I had my hair color done, my stylist even commented on how healthy my hair felt.
