Holiday Eye Look Using MAC Glitter!

First and foremost, I want to apologize for being off-radar! I have been busy trying to finish buying gifts for family and friends and work has been crazy too. I am also hosting Christmas Day dinner and the next day (the 26th), the family and I are taking the Amtrak to New York City. We are going to spend a couple of days there. Let me tell you, I love the holidays but this season has been especially hectic. Therefore, this New Year's Eve, the man and I are staying home and partying with the cats.

Anyway, I thought I would share my holiday makeup with you girls. Last Friday night, my office held its annual holiday party and this was the look I did. I did my hair in rolls and put the rest in a black snood.

I added a poinsettia flower barrette since it was a holiday party.

I wore a 1950s black velvet dress (which was almost a disaster) for the occasion but in these pictures I am still in my work/day outfit.

Here is an upclose look at my eyes:
And another view:

I started by applying Nars' Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Primer from lashline to browbone. I then applied MAC's Paint Pot in Pharaoh to the lids. I put on MAC's Sweet and Punchy eyeshadow on top. On my crease, I applied MAC's matte shadow in Copperplate and then I put on MAC Vanilla shadow on my browbone.

Then, I combined a tiny dot of MAC Pro's eyeliner mixing gel with a small amount of MAC Pro Glitter in Chartreuse. Using a small flat brush, I applied a thin coat of the glitter mixture and used a hair dryer to dry and set the gel. To complete the look, I applied MAC's liquid liner in Point Black for a cat-eye liner effect and on my lower lash line, I applied Make Up For Ever's Aqua Eyes liner in 9L (a soft pale shimmery gold shade).

I think the look came out well but working with glitter can be annoying since it likes to scatter! The gel is a must-have when wearing glitter on the eyes. It keeps it safely in place and without it, you risk eye irritation and major fall-out! There is nothing worse than having glitter on your face instead of your eyelids! If glitter "escapes" and ends up on your cheeks, simply use a make-up wipe or a powder brush coated with loose powder.

So, are you girls going to any holiday-themed events/parties? If so, do you do any special makeup looks? Please share!

  1. I love glitter on my eyes. I used to do it all the time when I was a teenager so I still jump at the chance to do it now. When I was young, I used to put unscented, clear lipgloss on my lids to help it stay put! *lol* Sounds crazy, but it worked. Your hair is gorgeous too. I love snoods for important "grown-up" events because they're classy and elegant but still vintage. I'm with you, we're also staying home and partying with our cats on new year's eve!

  2. looks fab!! It's funny you posted this today, I am "test driving" two different sealing gels (illamasqua and kryolan cel sealer) with Make Up Forever Gold glitter on my hand right now in prep for our NYE festivities! Have a Happy Holiday to you and yours!

  3. This looks amazing! I love shimmer shades but avoid glitter as it usually goes in my eyes - ouch. I will try again with some gel as this effect is fabulous!

  6. I love Sweet and Punchy - I'm a chartreuse whore. Have you ever tried Fyrinnae's Pixie Epoxy? It's fabulous for working with pigments and glitters.

  13. Thanks, girls, for all your wonderful thoughts and comments!!

Brittany: That is funny about using clear lipgloss to hold glitter! However, I know that some artists will use eye gloss for runway shows and photo shoots. The gloss gives eyes a wet look but for glitter, it may slide off! When I was a teen, I used a kohl eyepencil for my brows and I cannot believe how bad it looked even though at the time, I thought I knew what I was going! lol!!

Shrinky: I have heard that most of the Illamasqua line is amazing! I love their nail polish colors! The MAC Pro eyeliner gel is great but it needs a hair dryer to speed up the drying process. If I let my glitter gel mix dry on its own, glitter tends to transfer to my upper lids! Another line of makeup I want to try is Ben Nye. It is theatre makeup but I heard their sealers are the bomb! And, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to you too!

Clare: The gel for sealing glitters is a must! Also, if you prefer a more convenient way to wear glitter, Urban Decay has a set of vibrant colored glitters suspended in a clear gel (that dries fast) that come in a tube with a small brush attached. I have the silver one and I love it!

Betty2Tone: Thank you so much! I am totally hanging out on NYE with the cats. I am over traveling, shopping, and cooking for a while. I think we are going to get some snacks, open a bottle of champagne, and watch TV!

Penny: Thank you so much! I had fun experimenting with the glitter but I think I prefer Urban Decay's glitter gel. Even though MAC Pro's glitter is prettier in terms of color range, the Urban Decay is easier to work with.

Erin: I love Sweet and Punchy too! When MAC debuted "Back to the Beach" this summer, I knew I had to have that shadow as soon as I saw it! Rubenesque Paint Pot works well with it too! It really brings out the golden tones in Sweet and Punchy nicely. I have never heard of Fyrinnae before! Thanks for the tip! I have to go check it out for sure!

Fiona: I was never really into glitter before either. I always equated it with teen girls and club goers. Now, I think it can really be lovely and glamorous (and elegant) when used correctly. It is all about experimenting and finding out what works for you.

GingerGirl: Thank you so much for the compliment!

Ms Wanda: MAC Pro Eyeliner gel is fantastic and Urban Decay glitter gels are fun. The color range goes from gold, silver, vibrant greens, hot pink, to aqua blue and purple.

    Glamour Daze: Thank you!

Autumn: Thanks! My brows are tinted and waxed at my local salon every 5-6 weeks. Normally, my brows are a pale blonde. I used pencil for years but it was so tine-consuming and I had a tendency to make my brows looks heavy-handed and uneven. I have been getting my brows done professionally for 11 years and I have never looked back!
