VLV 15- Making a list!

At this moment, it is 23 days before VLV 15 begins! In preparation, I have made my clothing list, been going to the gym 5 days a week, and have created some new makeup looks.

I am so looking forward to VLV because 1: it's Vegas and 2: it will be my 37th birthday! I mean, a birthday in Vegas!? VLV or not, talk about fun and exciting!

Nevertheless, I would like to post a few clothing and accessories tips in celebration of the big event!

1. Check your couture!
Make sure there are no loose seams, rips, missing/loose hook and eyes, buttons, etc. If you cannot repair anything yourself, take it to a tailor. Also, be sure to take items to the dry cleaners if needed. I also pack a sewing kit complete with thread, needles, hooks and eyes, spare buttons, and a measuring tape (great when buying clothing from the vendors).

2. Check your shoes!
Make sure your shoes are in good condition! If they need new heel caps, new buckles, re-soling, new straps, or general repairs, take them to your local cobbler/shoe repair shop.

3. Check your beauty kit!
Do you have adequate foundation, powder, sunblock, mascara, lipstick, eyeliner, brushes, sponges, false eyelashes, and/or eyeshadow? Ensure your kit covers all the basics! Moreover, if you plan to carry your makeup, make sure liquids over 3 ounces are packed into your checked luggage. (This is especially important for US travelers)

4. Make sure that suitcase is under 50 lbs!
In this new era of travel, any checked bag over 50 pounds is going to be charged extra (ie $100.00 USD). Moreover, most airlines charge an average of $25.00USD for the first bag.  Plan to pack for the days you are away from home. For example, I will be in Las Vegas for 5 nights and 5 days. I will need 5 daytime outfits, 5 night looks, and a few varieties of shoes. I will also pack a few late night items like Freddies of Pinewood jeans, vintage tops, and Re-Mix wedges.

5. Jewelry and accessories!
Be sure to have a nice variety of jewelry and accessories! Bakelite, lucite, moonglow, rhinestones, parure sets, and celluloid oh my! I also plan to bring my lucite bags and hair flowers. These items will be in my carry-on luggage. I am too afraid of packing them in my checked baggage! So, if you plan to carry these items with you, make sure your bag fits in the overhead compartment above your seat or underneath. Please check individual airlines for details.

6. Hair!
Make sure you pack all you need to do your pin-curls, wet sets, and victory rolls. This includes Lottabody lotion, bobby pins, curlers, hair products (in travel sizes), combs, brushes, curling irons, snoods, and hair flowers.  I also pack a can of Tigi Dirty Secret to help my hair look its best between washes. Tresemme also makes a good dry shampoo spray.

So, what are your packing tips? Are you ready?

  1. I'm really bad at remembering to pack all the products I might use daily so I start at the top of my head and think about what I would need for a certain body part and work my way down. So the first thing would be my hair so I'd need to bring shampoo, hair brush etc. Then my eyes would be makeup or eyedrops, nose etc etc. That sounds ridiculous to me typing that all out, but a friend gave me that tip years ago, and it really helps me to remember everything

    1. Sounds like a good idea! I organize my makeup list by section (ie, eyes, then face, cheeks, and lips). I make a clothing list so I pack what I need. I tend to forget things without that list.

  2. When I'm travelling I am THE WORST for heavy luggage due to too many shoes/bags. I have trained myself to theme by colour (e.g. 'nautical') so my heavy accessories can double up- otherwise my bags weigh a ton!

  3. Oh I wish I was going! The restrictions from the UK are the same, in fact I haven't been to VLV since they changed I'm not sure I could meet the regulations!! Can you imagine making a 2 week trip with restrictions of 50lbs including VLV clothes and you can only have 2 cases , eeek!

    1. My auntie from Dublin is here now in the US for two months. I have no idea how she is able to pack so many things! I need to pick her brain for ideas!

  5. I haven't started yet, but the one thing I do every year is try on all of my planned outfits with shoes and jewelry and photograph them. Sometimes its easier to see how things will actually look in a photo rather than in the mirror.

    1. That is such a fabulous idea! My outfit for the car show sounded "good on paper" but once I had it on, I hated it! The long 40s skirt overwhelmed my shape ( am only 5'3) and the shapeless peasant top made me look terrible!

  6. I'm absolutly not ready!!!! My plane will take off from Paris in only 10 days and I have nothing ready!!! I don't know what I will bring and it's for a 3 weeks trip so I cannot only take clothes for VLV... Why only 50 lbs???? Moreover I want to bring back a lot of things to Europe, a real dilemna!!!!
    See you in Vegas.

    1. I'm so sorry this is off topic, but I posted on some older threads and hadn't quite figured out how to best ask you. I live in the DC area as well, and I'm looking for a good salon to get a Middy. Would you be willing to share where you go? Thanks! Love your posts!

    2. That is so great that you live in this area too! I am not sure if you are in MD, VA, or DC but I have been going to my stylist, Corry Kendall in Northern Virginia for 5 years. He has been cutting my hair in the Middy style for at least two years and he does a great job! If you want more information, please let me know!

  7. You have a lot of great tips! I don't have too much to add.

When flying, luggage space is valuable. I try to nest things. Jewelry packed inside one purse, makeup in another, etc... I even stuff stockings inside shoes! I'm also a dress roller. If all else, it makes me feel like I'm saving space and keeping things somewhat wrinkle-free.

Bring a spare everything. I tore a contact lens last year, and I'm so glad I bought an extra. If you don't end up needing something, someone else might.

    Also, bring extra hangers ;)

    1. I pack my jewelry and non-liquid makeup in my carry-on luggage. I roll my clothes too! I also use space bags. The only problem with space bags is that it is nearly impossible to re-fill them before going back home since they require a vacuum to work.

That is a great idea about the hangers! Hotels never have enough!

  8. I tend to overpack so I like to start early and review daily it helps me cut out the extra bulk. If I am rushed then I really tend to bring more than I really need. That being said. I always bring along at least one alternate evening outfit to vegas in case some kind of disaster should happen and think at least twice I have used the spare evening outfit.

  9. I received a set of free glasses online and have gotten each of our eyeglasses currently. It doesn't get just like Many of us imaged.
