New Hair Color! Fall is Here!

Now that Fall is pretty much here, I decided to freshen up my red hair color and cover up my summery highlight chunk. My hair is naturally a light auburn but over the years, the color has faded into a warm, dirty blond.

This is pretty much how my hair looked when I was younger:

And this is how my hair currently looks in its natural state. (Just imagine this shade 1/2 level lighter):
Before I visited my stylist today, I knew that I definitely wanted to cover my blond highlight chunk. I was envisioning a darker, richer shade for fall. But, there was a part of me that wanted to go totally natural. After much thought and consideration, I realize that my skintone looks better when I have my red hair.

So, at noon today, I visited my amazing hair genius, Corry, and we decided on a true, rich red:
Here is another view:
I love it! I feel so autumn right now even though it is 77 degrees and DC is has been bombarded with the remnants of a tropical storm since last night! This is how it looks outside my office window right now:
Nevertheless, tomorrow is the first day of October and the temperatures will be in the low 60s this weekend! I cannot wait to wear my 50s wool cardigans and rolled jeans!

So, what do you girls think about the new color? Do you ever change your hair color to match the seasons?

  1. I am loving that red! I was once a redhead for 9 months, but it just didn't look right with my skin tone, which is pink. It suits you so well!

  2. Not for seasons, but when I was younger I had green hair for St. Patricks day, or orange and purple for halloween etc.

  3. Wow that is a gorgeous shade of red,you look fab .It really suits you:) My cousins hair is almost that colour naturally, that deep flame red.I always wished i had hair like hers (but without the freckles).Mine is naturally dark brunette with auburn highlights.I usually dye it a dark auburn but if you don't mind i'd love to try your colour next time:)

  4. Thanks, Kim! I think your hair color is fabo! It really suits your skintone! I have been pink, burgundy, black, brown, various shades of red, and blond. The pink suited me the least since I have so much pink in my skin! Also, having to always dress around the pink color was hard! I could not wear reds, browns, corals, yellows, etc. I only looked decent in black, purple, navy, and of course, pink!

The only drawback to having red hair color is trying to keep the color from fading! Red washes out so fast! But if I use Aveda color shampoo or L'Oreal Professionale color depositing line, the color will last longer.

  5. Betty2Tone,

Almost two years ago, I had Special Effects hair color in Atomic Pink. I loved it but it was so hard to maintain! I also had to dress around the color so my wardrobe was very restricted.

I sometimes feel tempted to do another bright color again but I always go back to red.

  6. Mrs. Cleaver,

Thank you for the compliment! How luck that your cousin has this color naturally! And if you want to get a shade of red like mine, go for it! If your hair is naturally a dark brown, I bet your skintone would work with it nicely.

  7. I love special effects colors! I've used those and manic panic and rave..or rage? I love crazy hair colors :)

  8. Betty2Tone,

Special Effects is my favorite! My stylist specializes in color, especially what he calls, "fantasy colors" like Special Effects. He did an amazing job on my hair when I went pink. I have never used Manic Panic color but I have several Manic Manic clip-in color strips. They are great for events and concerts!

  9. I have a soft spot for redheads!! It looks marvelous on you :) I use Special Effects Devilish/Blood Red mixed half and half most of the year, but in the fall I switch to Blood Red alone.

  10. Look great Tara! I've been a bottle redhead for 13 years. I love it. So many people are blonde, and brunette but not so many are red! My advise is try and not wash it so often as the colour fades really quickly. Dry shampoos and scarves are a must!

  11. Shrinky Inky,

Your hair always looks good! I had Atomic Pink for a couple of months, my stylist and I switched my hair to Devilish. I then I had it colored to all black last April (2009). Now it is red again (albeit more natural) and I love it! The Special Effects reds and pinks are amazing! They are indeed the best!

  12. Clare,
Thanks for the compliment! I know what you mean about reds being special! I just wish my natural didn't fade as I got older. I was like golden, copper penny when I was 5 and I got into my teen years, my hair became more strawberry blond/light auburn.

As for color fade, Aveda color shampoo in Madder Root really helps. The conditioner is great too but if I use it too often my hair feels coated. I use the Aveda duo twice a week and they help the color last longer. I also stay away from Sulfite ingredients since they strip color badly. And like you said, hair scarves and dry shampoo are good too!

  13. It looks fabulous! I've always wanted to be a redhead, but I don't think it would work with my olive complexion. :(

  14. Kir,

Thank you for the compliment! Depending on your skintone, you can get red highlights or warm tones in a variety of shades. If you have a trusted stylist that is also good with color, they will work with you to find the best match for your skin!

  15. I love it!! I'm really fond of red and would love to go back to it myself (as you may already know), and your red is really stunning!! Now you just make me wanna go red more!!

  17. Your hair color is GORGEOUS, You look GREAT!
I just love this color on you.
I used to dye my hair alot either red or black.
I really loved red but hair hair does not hold it well. It fades so fast.. I totally love it when its just dyed but in no time at all its fades. Now Black I love also but I have very fair skin so I think sometimes it may wash me out a little. Unless I do it right at the end of summer when I am still sporting a tan. I didn't get that dark this summer so hrmm. But Whatever I mean I like black hair so much I figure who cares IF I LOOK LIKE A PALE FACE! *lol* I guess I don't have anyone to impress anyways. My man always loves my hair any way it is apparently. lol

P.S. I replied to your comment on my blog. WOOhoo for frogs! ;)

  18. It looks fabulous, really suits your skin tone! But then of course I love bottle reds! I too have problems with fading but I don't have to wash my hair daily or even every couple of days so it stays longer than most!

  19. Oh, I adore that colour, it looks wonderful on you. Unfortunately, I have hair so dark that in order to dye it I'd have to bleach it first and I just can't bring myself to do that. I just live vicariously through everyone else's bravery! ;)

  20. Thanks, Holly! I think black hair looks PERFECT on you! I had black hair for almost a year and I loved it. but black was just hard to maintain (at least for me) since my hair is so light! I had roots two-three weeks after getting touch-ups!

I always go back to red. I think it suits me best.

  21. Melzaelf,

Thank you for the compliment! I think you have the most perfect bettie bangs I have ever seen! They frame your face so beautifully!

I loved having my hair colored black but since my natural color is so light, my roots came in fast! I also liked the stark contrast between my hair and skin. I am super pale and my mom thought the black was too much but I loved it! lol

Despite all the colors I have had over the years, I always go back to black!

And yes, frogs rule! If I ever see frog legs on a menu, I get really sad!

  22. Straight Talking Mama,

Thank you for the compliment! I think your hair color looks wonderful too! It is very pretty!

Aveda color shampoo in Madder Root, not washing every day (and using dry shampoos), and using sulfate-free, color-safe shampoos are a must for preserving color. Most shampoos contain sodium laureth sulfates which strip color badly. Even so-called "color safe" formulas have it! Not cool! Pureology is the best but it is so expensive! Tigi Bed Head's SuperStar is a wonderful color-safe, sulfate-free shampoo and I use it with good results. It is cheaper than Pureology too.

  23. Toria,

Thank you for the compliment! Dark hair is often difficult for lighter colors. But if you want to have a touch of red in your hair, you can get some red highlights which area less damaging option than all-over color.

  24. Oh my gosh, I just love your hair style. I wish I had the patience to style mine.

  25. Thank you, vegan.and.vintage! When I was first learning to do vintage styles about 10 years ago, I had a tough time trying to get my hair to do what I wanted and it seemed like styling took loo long. But once I got the hang of things after a lot of practice, it's pretty much a breeze nowadays (but some days are better than others). All a I need is a rat tail comb, hairspray, and some bobby pins!

  26. I love love love red hair. I'm usually a redhead but after some hairdressing disasters had to go back to brown :(

Naturally I'm sort of auburn but have also recently been blonde (didn't suit me at all).

    Your colour looks wonderful!

  27. Thank you, vintage_belle! I once had bad highlights that were banana yellow instead of pale blond! It was bad! I also had an ugly layered cut and I had to get most of it cut off to fix it.

For the last three years, I have a wonderful stylist who is amazing with cut and color! I am lucky to have found him!
