Tales from a Lazy Saturday (Veteran's Day weekend)

This past weekend was truly a lazy one!  As a government contractor, I was fortunate enough to enjoy a "three day weekend" due to the fact Monday, November the 11th, was Veteran's Day.  Most local, state, and federal government employees and contractors have federal holidays off.  These days include, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Veteran's Day.  Banks and the postal service are closed as well.

Nevertheless, thanks to a longer weekend, the husband (aka Big Daddy) and I decided to stay home, relax, do laundry, make dinner, and enjoy a cocktail (or two!).

Just for fun, here are the highlights from our lazy Saturday!

I woke up early.  Even though I wanted to sleep in, my body was up thanks to my daily schedule.  Instead of falling back into my cozy bed, I got up, made coffee, had a lovely breakfast with Big Daddy, and hung out with 'le cat.'

After breakfast, I watched "Stalag 17" as I worked on my vintage clothing "fix/repair" pile.  Once in a while, you gotta fix those popped seams, falling hems, and loose buttons!

By the time it was lunch (well, 2 pm), I finally spruced myself up and did my hair!

Now that it is fall and going into winter, it is time to pair bobby socks with my beloved Re-Mix wedges!

I intended to make dinner at home but Big Daddy's mother (aka Mammaleh), invited us over.  We had cocktails, steak on the grill (shrimp for me), and a salad.

To end the night, we came home and Big Daddy retreated to the deck and enjoyed his beloved, vintage pipe and had a scotch.

Since it was Veteran's Day weekend and Big Daddy is a veteran (almost 10 years US Army Infantry), I wanted him to have a few super-chill, relaxed days off!  I am proud of him and his service to this great nation!

And for all of you who have served, I want to say "thank you" for your esteemed service and dedication.

Frequently Asked Questions

My rockabilly style is quite different from the 'norm' in this modern era and as a result, I often get asked why I dress they way I do, why I have tattoos, why I wear red lipstick everyday, and why I live choose to live a rockabilly lifestyle.

I am sure you gals have been asked why you wear vintage as well! Isn't it interesting how our look gets strangers 'to come out of the wood work (along and friends and family who may question our style)?'

So, without further ado, here are my FAQ!

1. Why do you wear vintage clothes?
I wear vintage because I love the aesthetic of the 40s and 50s. The patterns and fabrics flatter me better than the lines of modern clothing. For example, modern trousers are cut much lower than their vintage counterparts and as a result, the torso and hips on my 5'3 frame look less defined. Moreover, I adore the feminine styling 40s/50s clothes. I feel modern clothing endorses comfort while neglecting style and femininity.

2. Do you wear vintage everyday or just for special occasions?
No, I wear vintage everyday. Without over-sharing,  I wear vintage lingerie, nightwear, and of course, for my day and night wear. The only time I do not wear vintage is when I work out at the gym.

3. Do you wear vintage reproduction clothing?
When I first began to wear vintage, I 'got my feet wet' with vintage reproduction clothing like Stop Staring, Bettie Page Clothing, and Heartbreaker Fashion. To this day, I wear Heartbreaker pencil skirts, Freddies of Pinewood jeans, and Trashy Diva dresses. I prefer vintage, but I like reproduction too.

4. Do you ever wear modern clothes?
Like I stated before, I wear modern gym clothes. I also wear Ann Taylor, Talbots, and J. Crew suiting for work when I have to go on Capitol Hill or meet with government officials/clients. (I am a technical writer for a government contractor).

5. Why do you have tattoos?
Like the clothing on our backs, piercings in our ears, or the makeup on our face, tattoos are just another form of adornment. To me, tattoos are a way to express myself while beautifying myself.

6. Why do you wear red lipstick? It's so bold!
I love red lipstick! In my opinion, it is the ultimate shade of femininity! I fell in love with red lipstick in high school and it has been my 'signature color' ever since. I have tried to wear nudes, pinks, and neutrals but I feel 'out of sorts' when I do. Nothing makes me feel 'like me' like a good shade of bright, classic red!

7. So, you are a 'rockabilly,' you must hate modern music. 
Now, I do love Carl Perkins, Johnny Burnette (before "You're 16"), Santos, Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys, Chuy and the Bobcats, Lil' Luis and Los Wild Teens but I also love the Cure, Sisters of Mercy, VNV Nation, Imperative Reaction, Razed in Black, and Combichrist. I also love Depeche Mode, The Smiths, and Morrissey. VNV Nation is my FAVORITE group. Hands down!! I have seen them four times in concert and each time it just gets better and better! I love rockabilly but I also adore EBM and new wave. (But I hate doo wop!)

8. You are in your late 30s! You have to 'grow up' sometime and dress like a 'normal adult!'
Why is age even relevant? Moreover and more importantly, is there an arbitrary, 'cut-off' age for dressing vintage? In addition, what is deemed 'normal?' I see it this way: life is too short and life is a celebration so I am going to live it my way and how it see fit! I am happy and I feel complete. This is how and who I am.

Watching History Over My House!

This is Space Shuttle Discovery on the back of a huge NASA 747 flying directly over my house at 9:46 am. I am on my back deck in my vintage house coat and chiffon nightie yelling like a nut on a roller coaster.

After being retired last year, Discovery was transferred this morning from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida to the Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles Airport in Northern Virginia. The Center is a division of the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum.

As a kid in the 1980s, I used to love watching the Space shuttle launches on TV. I was mesmerized by the idea that something that big could fly into space. There was even a time I wanted to be an astronaut (like most kids I am sure). "Space Camp" was one of favorite movies.

After waiting a while for Discovery to make its appearance, I start wondering, "Are they sure it's going to fly over?"

All of a sudden, I hear something! Yes, here comes Discovery!

Nevertheless, after 20 years, the space shuttle program has been retired. I am sad it is over but I am glad I had the honor of witnessing an era come to an end.

A Post Long Overdue

I know I have been away a LONG time. Combined with the holiday season, a vacation, an illness, and my father's health, life has been busy!

The holidays brought me a 50s vintage chrome toaster, a ceramic Haeger bowl, a new 50s hat, an espresso maker, a dressform for sewing, and new 50s nightgown. I hosted Christmas dinner and I ate too many latkes and sufganiyot!

 I went on a cruise to the Caribbean with the husband and the in-laws during the second week of January and got norovirus upon my return. The trip was fun and after I recovered from my illness, my size 4 capris were loose so that is a plus!

My father is doing better but for a while, his sleep apnea and cataract surgeries were causing him some trouble. Not only is my dad's eyesight better than before, he is getting a proper night's sleep!

Last week I bought my tickets for VLV 15 and I cannot wait! This will be my second VLV and I am so looking forward to it! My birthday takes place three days before Viva begins and I will be celebrating my 37th in Vegas! Talk about exciting!

Speaking of Viva, I hope to see some of you gals there! As VLV approaches, I would like to organize a meet-up with my fellow bloggers who are going to the event. VLV is huge and meeting people by chance is difficult!

Eartthquake in DC

Earlier this afternoon I was working from home and all of a sudden, my tiki bar started to shake. My stem ware was tinking and I thought it was due to a low-flying plane. (I live near Dulles airport).

Within a few seconds, the shaking became more pronounced. My tiki bar became a clamorous mass of clanking dishes and glass. For a few seconds, the shaking was intense. I realized what was going on. This was no plane buzz. It was an earthquake. I ran under a door frame and grabbed on to each side. My husband, who was also working from home, ran up from his office in the basement and told me to go outside. For some reason, I started to cry. I felt weird. Emotional. And no pun intended: shaken up.

As soon as the husband and I got outside, the quake was over. Apparently, it was a 5.9 on the Richter scale. In all of my years living in Virginia, I never thought I would ever experience an earthquake.

After the earthquake stopped, my husband waited a while and then proceeded to check our house for damage. Other than the crack in  the east-facing wall of our tiki room (seen above. Sorry for the blur), everything is fine.

I know this crack is new, and therefore caused by the earthquake. I have been decorating the tiki room recently and I know this crack was not there on Sunday when I hung up new prints. I hope this line on the wall is cosmetic and not a structural issue.

Nevertheless, I hope all are well. I am a bit weirded out but I am ok. It is moments like this that make me realize how little control we have in life. I somehow feel more aware of what's important and what is bupkis at the end of the day!

The Tale of "Where I've Been and the Well-Traveled Road"

This is my cat sleeping on my stairs on a recent hot, sunny afternoon. The "pooped out" look on her face how I feel as of late. Oh, what I would do for a vacation, let alone a day off. Heck, I will even take an afternoon!

While my cat's sluggish repose is due to her 'tedious' schedule filled with appointments with her toys, meetings with the sunbeams, and lunch dates with her food and treats, my exhausted state is due to work, family, and more work. I have not been on a proper vacation for almost two years. In addition, I have not been to the gym since late May. Yes, you read correctly: May. And it's driving me BATTY!! I need to workout but finding the time has nearly been impossible.

Along with my professional responsibilities, I have been driving back and forth to my parent's house (about an hour and a half away) almost every week since early June. My dad has had several doctor visits and due to my aunt's passing in June, my mother has needed my help. Moreover, another aunt passed away nearly two weeks ago. She was in her 70s and was suffering from dementia. Combined with the worry about my dad, my mother has had a rough go of things. I know if anyone needs a break, it's her.

Despite the fever pitch of happenings in my life, I am ok. I just worry about my dad and my mom. They are getting older and I find myself anxious and deeply concerned about with the typical issues that accompany it.

However, my parents are leaving for Europe to visit family in a few days and I know my mom will love the break and being able to visit with her sisters and brother. Moreover, my dad will enjoy playing golf with his nephews and having a round at the pub with my uncles.

As for me, I just want to get back into a workout routine, better sleep, and maybe take a mini-holiday somewhere. I also want to get back into blogging and connect with you all again.

As an artist, I enjoy experimenting with various mediums of art, especially photography. With today's technology, the possibilities are endless! We can take color photos and make them black and white, manipulate light sources, increase contrast, and even create canvas effects.

A Sunny Saturday Afternoon and Outfit Post

On this lazy, sunny Saturday afternoon, the man, the cat (seen above lounging in a sunbeam), and I are enjoying the 61 degree temperatures. Yesterday was 79 degrees! But tomorrow is going to be 53 degrees and then rain next week. You just gotta love the 'yo-yo' weather that is spring! I am ready for warmer days but I just have to survive the ever-increasing pollen count! For example, the local count for the DC area on Wednesday was in the 'moderate
range and by yesterday afternoon, it was in the 'high' category!

This is a looking-upwards view of a tree in my front yard. Despite the beauty of trees in bloom, my allergies are going haywire! I finally went to the doctor on Thursday and got a shot and a prescription for methylprednisolone.

Even though I feel so much better than I did earlier this week, I am still sneezing and my eyes are still a bit itchy! However, by this coming Wednesday (ie when I finish my prescription) I should be back to normal. I am looking forward to running outdoors again! The treadmill is boring!

So, today the man and I decided to treat ourselves and order Domino's pizza and I so sorry we did! It was dismal. I do not eat pizza often so I was really disappointed. Nevertheless, we each had one piece and then threw the rest out. I then made a cup of ginger tea with honey to calm the icky feeling in my belly.

After my tea, I tidied the house and checked on my hibiscus that I left outside all day yesterday and overnight. My poor plant has been indoors all winter and I wanted to give 'her' some direct sunlight and fresh air. I think 'she' looks happy!

When I got home after work on Thursday, I opened my mailbox and saw that my new Freddies of Pinewood jeans arrived! I bought them from a seller on ebay. They were 45.00 USD and they arrived super fast! I had to order the 30 waist since the 28 were out of stock. The 26 waist would have fit but due to my 'ample posterior,' the 34 inch hips would have been waaay to small. I wish the jeans came in 26 waist and 37 hips and I would be set!

In an effort to shrink the jeans to fit, I washed them three times in hot water and then put them in the dryer. After washing and drying, my Freddies are still a bit big in the waist and seat. I wonder if I can have them taken in at my local tailor. What do you think, seamstresses?

Here is an upclose view. There is that tired, allergy-tinged face again! I am wearing my new Julie Hewett Rouge Noir lipstick. My hair is in rolls. I can finally notice that my hair starting to get longer. Instead of getting trims every 6 weeks, I have been getting them at every 12. I would my hair long enough to do more styles, especially a proper 40s up-do!

A Cold and Lazy Saturday

This morning,  I left the house at 8:45 am for my 9:00 am hair appointment. Despite my warm coat and gloves, I was absolutely freezing as I drove to the salon! It was so cold that I could actually see my breath and I could barely feel my feet! My car heater wasn't even kicking in! The temperature reading on my car dash read 19 degrees!

After my bone-chilling, 10-minute drive in the car, I arrived at the salon and I was happy to be inside again! During this appointment, Corry, my stylist of almost 4 years, refreshed my warm red color, trimmed my Middy, and added some amazing blond highlights as well! I had a blond chunk in my bangs colored over with a cool red tone back in September and I realized that I missed them around New Year's.  So, without further ado, here me wearing my new 49er jacket with my new hair color(s):

My blond is currently a pale shade with slight yellow tones. On my next appointment, Corry will lighten the blond again and eventually the blond will be platinum. It is always best to lighten hair gently and not process it too much at once! Hair can become damaged and even break off if the process is too intense!

After my appointment, I met my friend, Selina, at the mall and we shopped at MAC (I bought a new blot powder and a foundation brush) and then we talked over  coffee from Starbucks. It was so great to finally hang out with her! Our schedules have been super busy!

I went home after an hour or so and had lunch with the husband. He recently injured his achilles heel and is now wearing an aircast so we have just been taking it easy and not going out much. I do not mind. Besides, it was too cold to be out today! The high temperature here in the DC area only got to be 27 degrees!

After lunch, the husband and I made a fire and watched old MST3K episodes.

Before I knew it, it was time for dinner. Hmmmmm. What to make? Forget about cooking! I am too lazy today! The solution? Sushi takeout by the fire!

The food was so good, even Misty, my 14 year-old persian, came over to get her share:

Misty was actually looking into the camera but at the last second, she turned her head! I wish my camera could have captured Misty's cute, begging face! She has the "starving kitty stare" mastered completely!

Now that Saturday is coming to a close, I have to say it was a good day. I hope you all have a lovely weekend. And if you are somewhere cold, stay warm!

It's Good to Be Back! Happy 2011!

After being away from blogging for a few weeks, it feels good to be back in the "land of the living!" Now that the holidays are over, I am ready to write, share new products reviews with you, and start making comments again on your blogs again!

I hope everyone's holidays were enjoyable! Mine were so busy, I feel like I need a vacation! I hosted Christmas dinner and New Year's Eve. I went to my sister's Christmas Eve party, hung out with my parents, and celebrated with my in-laws. Moreover, on the day after Christmas, my parents, the man, myself, my sister, my brother-in-law, and my niece and nephew went to New York City on Amtrak. Every year around the holidays, we visit NYC for a few days for fun, dining, and shopping, and also to see the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall.

Let me tell you, New York City during a blizzard is a sight to be hold! I love snow and winter but walking from 50th and 6th down to 36th and 8th (after the Rockettes Show) in the bitter cold, driving snow, and gale-force winds is pure hell. Normally, we would have taken cabs back to our hotel but no cabs were running and the few that were out were just spinning in place.

The Amtrak and local airports were shut down for a few days but luckily we were all able to get back home to the DC area on Tuesday evening. I will go back to New York for sure but never during a winter storm. It is so not worth it!

So, now that it's 2011, I am eager to get back into the gym, train for a marathon, and continue to learn to sew! I will be 36 in April and I want to be healthier, fitter, and more knowledgeable when it comes to all things vintage!

A Night on Capitol Hill

This is a view of the the Capitol in Washington, DC taken last night. My company and I went to a reception on "the Hill" that kicked off "Cyber Security Awareness Month" for October 2010. It was neat to meet a few government "big wigs" along with a couple members of the House of Representatives.

Due to the nature of last night's events, I had to keep the vintage at home and wear a black suit. I often feel like I am "in costume" whenever I am not in my usual vintage attire! Despite my "typical DC-ite" look, I still wore red lipstick and did my hair in rolls:

After the meeting/reception, our group visited the recently updated Capitol Visitor's center:

Because I have lived in the DC area for 16 years, I often overlook the majesty of the city.  We are the home of the federal government, Supreme Court, and the President. There are scores of amazing museums, including the Smithsonian Institution. The city has so many wonderful dining and entertainment options and most importantly, DC is the epicenter of our nation's politics, both past and present.

Speaking of dining, upon leaving the Hill, the gang and I went to Capital Grille on Pennsylvania Avenue. The restaurant was filled with lobbyists, lawyers, locals, and tourists. I was surprised how packed it was for a Wednesday evening! It was hard trying to find a spot in the bar while we waited for our table. A yuppie in a suit even tried to hold a bar stool (just so he could use two stools to chill on) by saying his wife was sitting there when clearly he was with his buddy and he was not wearing a ring! Uh, if you are going to lie to people, at least do it with some originality! Talk about lame!

Anyway, after we got seated, our dinner was amazing! The service was impeccable too! I am so glad I got to see and experience DC in a new light.

The Many Charms of Living in The DC Metro Region- Traffic!

Even though this blog's main purpose to share aspects of my vintage life, I thought I would share another element: living in the DC Metro region!

I have lived here in Northern Virginia since 1994. I first came to the area in 1993 to attend George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. I am originally  from Richmond, Virginia. I did not go far but wow, what a difference in lifestyles!

Richmond represents quaint southern charm, rich with Civil War history. The city was once the capital of the Southern Confederacy. Outside the city where I was raised, farms and plush green countrysides make up the landscape.  People say hello to each other and wave at every car passing the house. Neighbors will have conversations with each other from across the street.

Washington, D.C. and the surrounding areas, however, are quite the antithesis of the laid-back "Old Dominion."  The federal government is based here along with President, Supreme Court, and Senate.  The national and political news is our local news.  People are lobbyists, contractors, lawyers, government employees, senate staffers, and military personnel. Due to the heavy concentration of the federal workforce, there are a LOT of people here. And as a result, there is a lot of traffic!  Did you know that the DC Metro Region is number 2 in the country for worse traffic? Whoo-hoo! I am so proud!

I think people are still out of town for summer vacation because the traffic was not as painful. School starts next week and I know the roads are gonna be bad!

Another Cat Post- Time for Bed!

This post is inspired by the cat comments today! I am truly enjoying your cat stories! I also love talking to other cat/pet people like myself. Not only am I a vintage nut, I am a crazy cat lady as well.

I am the proud "human mommy" to my furbaby, Misty, a 14 year-old blue cream persian. I think she is just 'a sweetie with a touch of brat' but she will correct me and say she is actually a "highly-regarded sushi expert, professional bed hog, and all-around queen bee of the world."

Back from a Little Hiatus

I have been away from the computer for about almost two weeks. I have been working, traveling, spending time with family, and dealing with the glass repair issue on my car. Now that I am back, I have lots of great posts and topics in the works. I have a vintage clothing store review on the way, a "vintage home part II" coming up, a post on bakelite, a lipstick review, a 'how-to-do Atomic/Eames era' tutorial for housewares, and a vintage hair update. I am looking forward to sharing all of this with you girls!

In my absence, I have missed writing and reading your comments. I truly enjoy the feedback from all of you! I especially enjoy hearing your insights and wisdom regarding all things vintage! I have been learning a lot! And for that I thank you, girls!

A Blah Day Here in DC

This is DC right now. It is just 69 F degrees today (21 C)! It has also been cloudy and drizzling off and on for most of the day. Some June weather, huh? Well, according to my "boyfriend," meteorologist Doug Hill of my local ABC affiliate, it is going to be sunny and 87 F (31 C) tomorrow!

I do not like cloudy and wet days like this, especially in summer. I think summer should be hot and humid and winters should be snowy and cold!

Anyway, I had my hair done so great but the frizz came out and tried to steal the show. I wore my vintage, teal blue chiffon scarf today in an effort to protect my hair.

It is funny to see the odd looks I get from some people whenever I wear my head scarves on rainy days like this. Just today, I was in the car during my lunch break and I was stopped at a red light when I happened to look over and see this man staring at me like I was some weirdo. Oh well. I guess he was just jealous that he cannot 'rock out' the chiffon like me!

So, here is a question, on days when the weather tries to ruin our victory rolls and curls, what do you do to safeguard it?
