Love and Hate of Lip Color

This is me, wearing Nars' Jungle Red lipstick. This color has really become a favorite of mine and I wear it often.

Yesterday, I decided to wear a bright fuchsia pink, ie MAC's Show Orchid. I have not worn this color in a long time. The last time I put it on, I had black hair and I could pull this color off wonderfully. Now that my hair is back to its natural red state (albeit with a blond streak), colors like Show Orchid do not flatter at all. I saw the pic showing me wearing this shade in my Middy hair post and I almost took it down! Yucky!

Regardless of my vintage look, I think I look better in bold, bright reds. I can also pull off corals, peaches, and salmon pinks. I will reserve the magentas, burgundys, purples, and fuchsias for when I wear my black Bettie Page wig at VNV shows.

So, what colors do you love? Which ones can you live without?

  3. Gingeyginge,

I am beginning to adopt the same philosophy: reds only! I have two pale shades of Chanel lipstick and I barely wear them! I think my sister would appreciate them. She is a pale blond who prefers a natural palette.

Not matter how many times I try to buy/wear other shades, I ALWAYS go back to red!

And thank you for the hair compliment! My fringe was being cheeky so I just curled it instead of trying get it to behave!

  4. Thank you, La Dama! My fringe is being rude today so I curled it to the side using a couple of pins.

MAC's and Nars matte reds are fantastic and I love Revlon's Love that Red. As for Revlon, I simply apply one coat, blot, apply again and it lasts and lasts. The Love That Red is a shade that was first introduced in 1951! Gotta love real vintage reds!

  6. I use to wear MAC and Benefit but I thought they were too dry. So, I switched to Loreal Endless "Saucy Sangria" and have been using it for years. It retails about $9 but works great. It's a bold red, not too pink, orange or purple...just right. And the best part, it does not bleed and wears for hours. It's matte yet moist and it's my favorite.

  7. Thank you, La Dama! My hairstyling has gotten easier and more fun to do due to the vintage cuts my stylist gave me. I recently got the Middy and I love it! A vintage cut really makes the difference, especially when it comes to pin curling and even using curling irons and hot rollers.

I have Cherries in the Snow! My sister first wore it when she was in college. It is a pinky red that looks great with MAC's Pink Swoon blush!

  8. Thank you for the product suggestion, Rachelle! I will give that L'oreal red a try! Julie Hewett's icon reds are great. They wear matte but have a very creamy feel. The gold tube is very vintage chic too. Apparently, Julie Hewett was the makeup artist for Pearl Harbor and she used the red shades she created.

  11. I am pretty much a red only gal, blue based preferred but I don't mind a tomato red or a brownish red now and then. My current fave is Illamasqua's Box and Milani's Perfect Red. Since my hair is flaming red I feel I look strange with any other color on my lips. sometimes I just use Benetint and a gloss if I'm not feeling like wearing lipstick. And you can never have too many red lippies ;)

  12. I love so many shades. I do wear red a lot, but I also love most shades of pink. Wet and Wild has a great red lipstick numbered 519A and I also wear a lot of the glitter gloss from Stila.
You look great in your photo!

  13. I have red hair too, so I only wear red lipstick. I too think a hot pink does not work well on me. I'll wear it as a clothing colour (its my fave colour next to red!)but not as lipstick. I'm not brand loyal, but the long wear ones are best with a blue undertone as I have whiter than white skin with freckles.

  14. Shrinky Inky,

I have seen tons of rave reviews for Illamasqua products! I know that we can buy the collection online at Sephora.com but I love swatching in person. However, most stores do not carry it! I did get to swatch a few things in the NYC, 5th ave store and the one at the Venetian in Vegas. Sadly, I really did not get to play with the lipstick color in both locations since my family was complaining for me to hurry up so they could go sightseeing! Arg

Anyway, I have been reading a few blog reviews featuring swatches of the lipstick Box. It looks pretty. So, if you are familiar with MAC reds, how does Box compare? I am done with MAC reds (I have most of them already! lol) and I am looking for something different!

  15. Thank you for the compliment, Tara! I love reds and I have come to the realization that other colors will just be wasted on me. I also feel this way about lipgloss. I prefer matte textures and I find the "slip" of lipgloss to be too much.

So, I am going to stick to what I know and look best in: bright, matte reds!

  16. Clare,

Your skin sounds just like mine! I am a pale ginger with freckles. My skin has a true pink undertone. One my aunties from Dublin tells me, "Chicken, you have the map of Ireland on your face!" lol

MAC used to have a great pink-based red matte lipstick called "Glam." It was so vivid! It was more like a bright, blue-based magenta with red in it. Then, to my sadness, MAC goes and discontinues it! Talk about wrong! When I went into MAC to buy a new tube a couple of years ago, one of the sales associates/makeup artists told me it was no longer made and I felt like throwing a major wobbly! lol
