War-Era Movie Night! Swing Shift

One of my all-time, favorite, "comfort food" movies is "Swing Shift" (1984) with Goldie Hawn, Christine Lahti, Kurt Russell, Fred Ward, and Ed Harris. Holly Hunter is in this too before she hit the big time. She plays one of Kay's (Goldie) friends/co-workers. I love the clothing, especially the ladies' uniforms at the war plant. I also love Kay's home decor. So cute!

One of the main draws of this film is the chemistry between Kurt and Goldie. Apparently, they moved in together after filming was complete and have remained a couple ever since. Anyway, the attraction between Kay and Lucky is smoldering and bittersweet. This element covers the whole war time romance taboo very well.

Now, some reviewers have said this movie is bad but I think it is very enthralling and quite entertaining. I think watching this in bed on a lazy hot day or winter afternoon would be fun. Just make some mac-n-cheese or pop some popcorn and enjoy.

So, what are your favorite war-era/period films?

  2. I love this film. Didn't understand why Goldie cut her hair, though.

My favorite War Era show was on TV in the early 90s and was called HomeFront. You can find it on youtube and watch episodes one after the other. It was only on for 2 seasons. It chronicles the lives of a group of people in Ohio right after the war. You have war brides, women losing their jobs at the plant, race differences, and romance. The clothing is fantastic and I loved the stories.

  3. I've never heard of this - I'll have to look into it! I generally prefer WWII era things set in the UK but one of my favourites is definitely A League of Their Own. Hehe. It's cheesy but great!
My all-time favourite is probably Foyle's War (for TV shows).

  5. Kim,

I remember that show Homefront now! I was in high school when it came out. Tammy Lauren and Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) were part of the cast. I never watched it. I was in love with Star Trek the Next Generation and Golden Girls. Maybe I can find out where to get the DVDs (if avail).

As for Kay (Goldie) cutting her hair, I have no idea. I know that length was apropos during the era.

  6. Andi,

Swing Shift is a great little movie worth checking out. I thought Goldie, Kurt, Ed, and Christine all did a great job. I love the ladies' look when they are working at the war plant! The snoods are just too cute!
